Just a bit of fun to share here. I started this interest with a temproary avatar, intending to replace it with a photo of one of my friendly Greek fisherman who is a huge local character, known to all, including recurring tourists. In his youth he appeared to be a figure of beauty, not just according to him but to others too. Alas the years have piled on the kilos, the clothes are too tight, and the face is weather beaten. Despite this he mistakenly thinks he is still an object of beauty though beneath his gruff exterior I know he has the kindest of hearts and is now a most excellent friend. His reaction to becoming the avatar for Greece was a temper tantrum of suspicion and he resorted to shouting at me in English to express his unwillingness. Please do not be offended by the strong language here. "Whata the fu***a you wanna putz me on ze internet for, you a selling me to the strange womens who wanta my bodies,fu***a you, I knowa trusty you and a many womens will see me and wanta my moneys." And more. So why don't you like, or others not like, your or their photos being taken? By the way I intend to snap him from behind a corner and still post his photo here.

Nice presentation here and the lingo used makes me smile. Do the Greek have their own localized slang when they speak English? Tell him that he would be world famous if his pic is posted in the net. Don't care whether he has a sun baked face or fishy smell as long as I can have fresh fishes everyday.

Hi Zandi, glad you liked it the presentation. This particular Greek did live and work for many years in Canada so we generally communicate in both languages at once. I don't see his problem, he's always posing for pictures with tourists and eyes up any woman who passes. You know, actually the fishermen here don't tend to smell fishy as it's actually amazingly clean whereas I did presume that going out on the boats would be a bit stinky. You are welcome to the fresh fishes and also my new relative, just keep your hands off his lobsters, they are for me only.

He sounds like a character. I like characters. i THINK U should get a good pic of him & put it on. I bet his bark is worse than his bite. He probably wouldn't admit it but bet he would be quite please if u do that & he sees it.

I hope u are able to get a pic of him . I'm anxious to see it. If he is courting the mama maybe u can get a picture of them together. He might be more willing for that.

I am determined to capture him in all his glory Aunty, I believe his courtship as you put it would probably not be appreciated but he's stopped wandering round from cafenion to cafenion but stuck himself firmly in one place for the last four months. This character also features in my 'best man' discussion.

Hi Aunty, well I just got back in from the cafenion and had a coffee with him and I'm beginning to suspect he has a thing for the cafenion owners mama, as he had a clean shirt on. I had the camera and was indeed going to snap him when it turned out the camera, which I had charged this afternoon, hadn't in fact charged, so a bit of a technical problem there I'm afraid. But I could have easily got him snapped as he was sitting down and not known for moving too quickly. I like characters too Aunty and there are just so many strange ones out here. I will return another evening with my camera, plus I'll need to call round at his when we run out of pomegrantes.

Hey thea! I'm lmao from that very vivid description of your fisherman! And now I am really even more curious and can't wait to see this picture of the "Greek Adononis"! (Excuse the spelling) Now I am more curious then ever so hurry up and catch him when he leasts expects it! I think that is so funny that he thinks so highly of himself that he thinks all the women will want him and his money!

But is he married? What he worried to much about it? It is a self promotion for him. I don't mind if my photo being uploaded here as long as that photo is truely me and I give my best pose there.

Hi Kyrios akuler, unauthorised photo what nonsense my friend. He might not willingly pose for it but I have ways, and once its my personal photo I can do what I want with it, anyway he's only worried by the word internet as that nasty chap in the next village bought himself a Thai wife online and it didn't work out. He is now a relative so I shall do as I wish, even if I have to resort to telling him I need his picture to put on my bedside table to gaze at every night. He is divorced by the way and very keen for a woman, just not one who wants to marry him for his money (or his outside bathroom).

Right that's it, I will do it this evening, I'm off to find where I put the camera now then just got to work out how to recharge it. If I get stuck I can post a discussion. 'Where is my camera and how do I recharge it'. Sure to be a winner

by your own admission, the person in question is no longer an object of attraction. so why do you want to upload his picture....(do you want to scare someone ..blue?). anyway it would be fun to see what response the photo gets. i don't mind my photo to be uploaded except for absurd purposes. (i don't see why anyone would upload my photo anyway..)

Hi sunny, well much as i would love to upload your photo here you may not be the best representation of Greek life style as may not have the appropriate moustache. Just because I believe my new found relative is most definitely not an object of attraction does not detract from the fact that he believes he still is. In his mid 50's he looks in the mirror and sees a slim black haired Greek rogue and not his true self. But he does typify the characters locally and some of them I knew would have taken to sea if I'd asked for their photos but this one I presumed would have no objections. Fear not I will be putting it on soon.

Well I'm down there this evening, but first I need to find the camera and work out how to recharge it. Plus he could be in hiding in case I appear with my camera.

I don't like to take my picture taken either. First of all, because I, unlike the fisherman, am not a figure of beauty, co why should anyone take pictures of me? Second of all, but of even greater importance, I refuse because it seems to me everybody is taking pictures of me, and I never get any of those pictures...

They're taking my picture because of my obvious charm, of course . Just kidding... I don't know why... maybe because I'm part of the group, or because they want to be polite... I also make impressions of people sometimes or dress funny (I even have pictures and even a movie of me imitating sumo wrestlers) so they must have that picture. I had some pictures of me here on my profile too, but I got really upset once and decided to delete them all and go back into the shadow... Maybe I'll upload one or two sometimes if the people around here behave.

I always behave around you as you keep telling me off other wise. Glad to hear you've got a good group to have fun with. You should put a picture up. I have had the most awful day trying to master the workings of transferring pictures onto here and put one my son took up for practice but the rabbit recommends removing it. Anyway something rather amusing just happened so I shall away and make a discussion.

Hi stvasille, I don't think many of us really like having our pictures taken unless we are well prepared, I'm certain though that you put yourself down somewhat. I wonder why everyone is always taking your picture. I wish we could just go back to the easy way of putting a film in, sending them off in the post to be develped and then invariably receiving someone elses photos back in the post.

Hello, Thea. I've come across this in Spain, and more recently in Germany. It's not that they don't want their photos taken, they want payment for it, as if they're some kind of celebrity. We were wandering around a small village near here, when we came across a group of youths with fighting c*cks. (That's the feathered kind, by the way!) Tony got his camera out, and they were happy to let us take photos, but then asked for payment. We gave them a two word answer, the second word being 'off!' While we were at the Octoberfest, a mad Italian (male) camper donned a long, curly blonde wig. He was dancing with a big, beefy German, so Tony took photos. Again, they asked for money, and again, the response was two words. I don't like having my photo taken, because I don't take a very good one, IMO. However, my favourites are Tony's candid, unposed shots. One of them is my avatar, and he took a smashing one in Germany which I'll load on my profile page as soon as we're sorted out here.

Hi Sandra, I have never come across anyone here expecting payment for their photo ever, that's a new one on me. The Walrus simply didn't trust my motives when the word internet was mentioned. If I'd just said a little snap for my bedside table I dread to think of the poses he might have come up with with that moustache of his. Anyway he was in an excellent mood the other evening and he didn't object to the camera coming out at all. However I had failed to charge it up correctly so will be rectifying that today. He is no longer allowed to protest anyway since we shook hands on our new relationship, that's in another one somewhere else. But the picture will be coming soon and I know Alice for one is looking forward to its unveiling. I think it's nice to see your smiling face up there on your avatar, me I'm like the Walrus and don't trust the interent.

Hi Kitty sweetie, well having met with such enthusiasm here from people wanting to see said pic I am now rather taken with the idea of selling him off to some willing taker. So let us reiterate here for any willing particiapants. Age mid 50's, ample stomach (which he names his s8x cushion) and insists on fondling in public, large man boobs (we are threatening him with a bra), large moustache, gone grey from black but has not yet discovered where his friend Fotis bought the hair dye, own house, large garden, large fishing boat, one moped, one ex wife, 2 grown up childen who willingly live with him, only lobsterman around, good sense of humour, bad temper, plenty of ailments he likes to discuss, can speak some English, a tad crude (to say the least),good at lending out his unique toilet unblocking pipes and will even send the son at no charge to unblock - the most unpleasant job in the world. The picture will now come when I work out how to first charge, and then set the time on the camera, he appeared willing enough last night to be snapped. If any of you choose to take this specimen (the walrus) off my hands I expect a large commission to be paid. (Kitty, I can't make a disc about a landmark but hit 100 BR this morn, so I'm really happy about that one.)

I've taken advice on how to charge the camera properly in readiness but not going out tonight, something nasty bit me earlier so had to take anti histamines which means no driving. I hope everyone is not hoping for a pretty sight appearing up there, but the image does typify the village.

...Hi theo09, As we age, photographs are not necessarily our friend. I don't care how beautiful or cute you were when you were younger. I haven't taken a photograph in some many, many moons. I do seriously think it has something to do with the "worship" of youth in our society in general. As our societies get older and the median age increases, as more gray haired models start appearing on the scene, the vanity may abate a little and people perhaps will value older people more than they do now. I happen to think that age brings character to ones face, but I am still not interested in taking any pictures. :o) Older men are valued more than older women as well, look at the number of wrinkled older people who are news anchors, how many are old women.? Take it easy, and age gracefully if you can.

Hi artistry, I wasn't talking about myself at all, but a local larger than life character whose only opposition to having his photo taken is what he thinks I intend to do with it, which he believes is to flood the village with strange women who will all be after his money and his flesh. Personally I have no problem with ageing and indeed increased a whole decade on my last birthday upon realising the addition of my ten year old child really needed to be factored into my age. As for the worship of youth in society, it all depends on which society one is living in.
