Is there a book that has influenced your life?? |
|
They say reading changes and influences your mind, so is there any books you can say has influenced the way you live your life or the way you look at life? I cannot personally name one book that has changed my life, but books have changed the way I think in general, for example, books like Thousand Splendid Suns and Memoirs of a Geisha make me glad to be a woman in England in this century which tehn makes me look on life as being better as it is easier for me than for many others, it also makes me want to go out and help others more. What have books done for you?

Though I'm not sure if it's in print anymore, I do highly recommend it.....a book of inspirational fiction, which sold millions, despite its cool critical reception. It's a series of 26 philosophical essays, written in English prose, as well as illustrated with some beautiful paintings by the author...but with a philosophy we all can, and should, live by.
Title: "The Prophet" Author: Kahil Gibran Circa: 1974.
The only other "book" that has had a profound influence on my life, is: The Dao. One can read these philosophical sayings a thousand times, and still find something new each time one reads it again. Amazing!

2. Ravenladyj (18010) | 4 months ago | Yea there have been a few books that have had a huge impact on my life actually...Courage to Heal and Awaken the Buddha Within, are two that immediately come to mind...Hardcore Zen is another one...A Child Called It is another one...

| LittleMrsSunshine (86) | 4 months ago | I've read a child called it and yeah another one that has made me so grateful for my life and my parents and family! There are a lot of similar books out there, especially from Ireland, and I thank my stars that my grandma moved over here then stayed over there in the 60s! Though it is a lovely country, it was gripped by idealism and religious dogma that haunted a generation.
I'll have to have a look at the other ones you metioned! Need more books, though the hubby disagrees!!

LOL yea my hubby has the same attitude....I personally think one can never ever be with TOO MANY books....Courage to Heal is actually a book for adult survivors of child sexual abuse so it may not be any use to you..it did wonders for me though....Awaken the Buddha is by Lama Surya Das and there are several others in the "series" that I've also read and have really enjoyed...

3. boybato (524) | 4 months ago | Not just one book but a series of books I should say. Since I started reading John Maxwell's books, my outlook and perspective in life have changed. Most of his books tackle about responsible and moral personal development and gives more emphasis on the area of leadership. Maxwell is a very strong writer and his books can really move and change one's outlook and approach in life. I can tell that I have changed for the better since reading his books. The first John Maxwell book that I have read is entitled "Failing Forward". Such book focuses on failures and how can one turn failures into success and what is failures should be. After reading such book, I purchased more John Maxwell books and right now I'm planning to collect all of them. He immediately became my favorite author (maybe because I'm not that of a reader before). His books paved the way for me to read other books by other authors. I'm very inclined in personal development, business and finance, technology (computers, electronics, and IT related fields), and sports books. I just finished reading Robert Kiyosaki's "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" and it also helped me change my approach towards money and finances. To sum it up, Kiyosaki's book really helped me in my quest in my goal. I'm planning to start a business soon and be as financially free as I can be in the future so I can give/reward myself and my future family a very good, comfortable, and enjoyable life.
I'm just so glad that at my age right now I got hooked into reading. Though I can say that I'm a late bloomer, at least it's better to be late than never. I'm starting to pick up the pace and get back some of the time that I wasted in the past. Books really helped, not only influence, but change my life.

| LittleMrsSunshine (86) | 4 months ago | Not heard of John Maxwell so I did a little searching! Sounds good, those kind of books can really alter the wayyou think. I have read, and listened to, Paul McKennas instant confidence, its a book and hypnosis cd to help you gain confidence and self esteem, which is something I really lack at times. It gave me the courage to start writing my own novel and also to go out and stand up for myself at work and change my job. A year later i love my new job, i'm buying a house and we're trying for a family, os it really has changed me. When i started this discussion i didn' think of the non-fiction books, just the fiction ones! How narrow minded of me! I must start listening to that cd again and re read the book as I seem to have writers block on the novel and it sits unfinished!!
Good luck with your business!

boybato (524) | 3 months ago | Wow! That's really great of you. Personally, I prefer reading non-fictional books. Such books are really so helpful and it contains insights and ideas from very highly successful people. The very good thing about it is that we can borrow, apply, and even follow their ideologies and principles in our own lives or better yet guide us to a better life.
As of this moment, I started to read some of the books that I'm done reading already. Reading for the second and sometimes third time gives me more learnings and makes me see and understand things that I weren't able to comprehend the first time I read the book. I'm planning have a series of Napoleon Hill books as well as Dale Carnegie, Warren Buffet, and Donald Trump. These are some of the authors/persons that I have heard who became so successful in their fields of endeavor and whose ideologies I can probably pattern in my own life.

4. linamachina (268) | 4 months ago | When I was high school I read Leo Buscaglia and that influenced the way I felt towards myself, which profoundly changed my outlook on life at the time. I recently just finished The Shack, (which I had mentioned in another discussion) and the book has also influenced the way I view life and spirituality. It also, on an intellectual basis allowed me to understand just a little bit more of the Christian faith. I probably can honestly say that I get something out of every book that I read whether its pure fiction or thrillers, sci-fi, and the self-help books, etc but of course, some books more than others!

7. learn2earn (10994) | 4 months ago | The great book - the Book of books that have influenced my entire life is the Bible. In this book, it tells how a holy God became flesh to redeem a wretched, sinful, and poor sinner like me. That book has shown me how I can have a home in heaven when I die. It is the real manual for life. If you follow it's precepts and commandments, all will be well with thy soul, but curse if you don't follow.

| LittleMrsSunshine (86) | 4 months ago | I have to admit I have not read the Bible front to back, but a good chunk of it. I do also follow its teachings and it has obviously influenced my life, but I like to know about other religions beliefs and ideologies to make sure I have a well rounded view of the world.
