Geez, I'd think you would have had enough birthdays by now to figure that out.

You make your wish, then blow the candles out. However, it's always fun to mess with the minds of those attending the party by just sitting there, thinking and thinking, maybe even giggling every now and then, going back to thinking, thinking, and thinking some more. Do this until someone says, "Will you PLEASE make your wish and blow those candles out????"

However, in my vast experience at making the wish and blowing the candles out, I have found that those wishes generally never come true. What a ripoff, huh?

I was always told to make the wish and then blow out the candles. You have to blow them all out in order to get the wish so if one has a LOT of candles like you and myself, better wish for something unimportant!

It will make the wish come true to some degree...LOL

Decide on the wish before you blow, then say it in your head AS you're blowing... good wishes are that your hair/eyebrows won't catch fire; you won't get the slice of cake with the big dollop of dried wax on; you won't accidentally spit (or worse) as you blow & that some 'joker' hasn't put those self re-lighting candles on.

I usually start to make my wish right as everyone is almost done singing "Happy Birthday". Usually somewhere around the words "to you" at the end of the song. Then I'll make the wish and blow out the candles.

Okay, I always thought that you were supposed to think about what your wish was going to be while your friends and family were singing Happy Birthday to you. Then as the song ended, I would finalize within my mind what my wish was going to be. As I was taking in my breath to blow out the candles, then I would make my wish during that last deep breath and as I am blowing out the candles.
But, I think I must be doing it wrong because none of the birthday wishes that I've ever made in my life have come true. I've had much better luck with wishing on a star.

For me, it is always making a wish first then blow out the candles. Actually, I never heard of someone else doing it another way.

I think normally we would compose our minds, close our eyes, make a wish, open eyes then blow the candles.

At least that is what I did when I blew out the candles a few hours back.

In the olden days we made the wish first (and must not tell anyone what it is or it won't come true) and then blew the candles out and you must blow them all out or the wish will not come true either. So it would not make sense to make the wish later. You would have to do it first.

HOWEVER, in those days people were not as concerned about GERMS as we are now, because the candle blowing out would be a family thing in a close-knit homeogeneous community where everyone had more or less the same level of hygiene. Now I would not eat any cake that someone blew over, not even my own! I will pull the chicken's wishbone instead to get my WISH.
