Lagality of using a cell phone while driving vs. other distractions email this discussion to a friend?

I recently posed the question of what others thought about using a cell phone while driving. The answer was an overwhelming yes- that there should be restrictions. My question now is where do you draw the line over distractions while driving? Hands free devices have been proven to be just as dangerous as putting a cell phone to your ear because it is about the distraction and not about taking a hand off the wheel. This being said, are conversations with others in you car, listening to music, or getting lost in thought just as dangerous? Where do you draw the line for what is acceptable and legal while trying to practice safe driving?

You know, everything you said does make sense. Being that I live alone, I really don't have anyone in my car with me, so that part I don't have to worry about. You are right though, that cell phones or talking to someone in the vehicle can be a distrction. However, I think cell phones can become a bigger distraction as poeple have a tendency to take their eyes off the roat, more than if they are talking to someone. I don't talk on the cell phone all the much when I am driving as it can be a distraction, and I certainly don't want to take my eyes off the road for one second, as it could be disastrous. I think that we can draw the line at doin things that could cause accidents, and the cell phone is the biggest distraction of all. I do everything in my power not to get distracted under any circumstances. Have a very good day, and happy mylotting. happy

i am going to say that for one bad apple the whole tree has to pay, unfortunalty due to the stupid things people often do while driving, the law makers are impossing more stirct laws reagarding driving. their was in the news just recently that a young teenager died due to texting and speeding so now law makers are tryn to pass a bill forbidhing you from texting while driving. they feel it is up to them to imposs laws were everyone is safe.alot of use may not agree while others do. thats just how it is. but in the end every one sees that those rules are thier to help us not hurt us.

Everything you have said is a distraction to a certain extent. I still think though that texting on a cellphone is the biggest distractions while driving a car. It all depends on who you talk to as to whether hand free devices are just as dangerous as texting on a cell phone. It is hard to decide where we need to draw the line but as drivers we need to remember that the first thing we need to be doing is paying attention to what is going on around us on the road Everything else should come second.

This whole question is driving me crazy where I live. You can get pulled over for eating a sandwich and driving, but texting on the cell phone is legal. I have no idea why both actions are not covered under the distracted driving laws. Please don't get me wrong - I am not perfect, but the fine that someone paid for eating a sandwich and hitting a sign was enormous. There was no fine for the driver who hit a child while texting. Something is wrong with this picture.

...Hi JenBth, Let's move away from the legality for a moment. Only because the law
is the law, if you are stopped by the police because you are speeding and they find you are not wearing a seat beat, if that is the law then you are cited, and so on. You can always fight the ticket, but law are on the books for a reason, for drivers' protection and safety. Now if you think about it, as my sister once said, cars are lethal weapons or can be. So paying attention to what you are doing while driving is a good thing. One person may respond entirely different in certain instances with a possible car accident. Some people can multi-task, but my feeling is that while you are driving a car, that's what you should be doing, your life and other people's lives are at risk everytime we all get behind the wheel. We ourselves should determine what we should or should not do while driving that would be safe or not safe and possibly endanger someone, outside of those things that are illegal. But to try to draw lines, everyone has a different reaction time, and it is very difficult, I feel to make such a judgment call on any one thing for all. One other thing, if a lot of people are found to have accidents while doing one particular thing while driving, that then naturally leads to bans and more laws. Take care and safe driving.
