hiya My_Lotters
Don't banks just leave you feeling exasperated?
Friday 18th Sept<<< note date. Either my fault or the royal mail to blame first I have to admit, but I had not received my new bank cash line card when the old one expired recently. I had gone to the post office as usual and the old card wouldn't work, I was kindly advised from the post office clerk that it had expired. So off I trot to the bank where the teller ordered me a new one and kindly changed my address for me, which had been done previously by letter, which they say they didn't receive. Withdrew a little cash to tide me over and home I trot again. Friday 25th Sept. Still no bank card arrived in the post, so I called the bank and was advised that it would take the change of address longer to go through than it would for the new card, so the new card would go to my old address ....again! Now you'd think the bank clerk would've known that last week right? ok... another new card ordered and I'd just have to wait... so I wait. Wednesday 30th Sept. Yipeee! new card arrives and with what I thought was a debit facility, which turned out only to be a new design There was me getting my hopes up on giving up the credit card use LOL. Anyway... off I go to the bank, using the last of what little money I had left to bus it along because of my backache. Tried the new card in the P.O. ... yep! you guessed it, it wouldn't work! I asked the post office clerk to try again, but still nothing. I wasn't going to try it a 3rd time, as we know this cancels the card! Got home, called the bank and was advised that there was nothing wrong with the card and to try it in the auto teller/cash machine. Thursday 1st Oct. ok, backache has improved so off I walk along to the post office, he said I'm putting wrong pin number in... grrrr I know my pin like the back of my hand and wasn't entering it wrong. Left the P.O and went to the auto teller... DECLINED! Walked back home and called the bank. Bank clerk advised me over the phone that the old card had been reported as lost which automatically changes the new PIN number!!! OMG! "So where's the new PIN notification?" I asks.... to which I receive the reply, "Shall I send you it out madame" I wanted to say, "No don't bother I'll just keep trying to guess it!" Instead I said "Yes please, thank you" So here I am 3 weeks later with no food, no money, and no more patience. Have you cried today?

thea09 (4137) | 2 months ago | Listen seriously Alice as for once this is a serious answer. You will get compensation if you follow this to the letter.
Telephone the bank. Immediately ask the operative for their full name and note it. Then tell them the date and time, tell them you are aware that for your protection your call is being recorded and ask to be transferred to a supervisor. Do not give a reason, simply state you wish to be transferred as is your right. She will immediately advise the supervisor that trouble is on the line but you must renain calm and polite at all times as you are being recorded.
When transferred to supervisor, same routine, take down full name, state date and time and again that you know the call is being taped. Do not discuss anything more. All you want is the name and direct contact address of the managing director. They will have been told not to give it out but you state it is your legal right to have this information and don't be fobbed off. Do not state why you want it just politely ask for the information to be supplied. You then detail your complaint in writing to the managing director having kept several copied. In your letter first state that you contacted the bank on such and such date and you adivsed you knew you were being recorded. Then state your claim and at least 3 times the figure of compensation you require. Said managing director will be livid that his incompetent staff have not dealt with your complaint and he is now having to waste his time. If one of his staff replies to you fobbing you off take a copy and return to managing director with another copy of the original plus the added statement that you may now need to look for addtional compensation as your complaint has not been dealt with promptly. If this happens a second time simply state a copy of all correspondence is about to appear in the local press, even though it isnt. At this point they will offer some compensation and do not settle for less than the amount you originally exaggerated. Do not waste your time complaining to staff. Managing directors hate their office to be bothered with piddling little complaints which this is in his eyes and negative publicitiy is their worst nightmare. This is how the system works Alice. True completely. Ask if you want to clarify anything my dear but you are totally justified to stand up to them and receive compensation.

thea09 (4137) | 2 months ago | The above does not refer to the reversal of a charge Alice, it refers to proper compensation for your time and stress involved. You must advise in your first letter that you will be charging the same as the bank letter rate if subsequent letters are needed.

thea09 (4137) | 1 month ago | All I can say Alice my dear is don't hold your breath for your charge back and don't even think about compensation. Explaining to the desk clerk your problem is not the way to be taken seriously by the people who write the 'shut up' cheques.
Sorry.

3. jb78000 (1628) | 2 months ago | oh that is frustrating - is there no way you can go to the bank with your account number and passport and withdraw fund that way? i've had to do this myself countless times. also refusing to go until someone helps can work wonders...you could also take handcuffs, attach yourself to something in there, give the key to a friend and tell her not to come back until you text her with a prearranged code. sometimes you have to be tough.

5. dawnald (9499) | 2 months ago | Ah reminds me of the time the bank called because they didn't like the signature on a check I had written. I called back to tell them the check was OK. They didn't bother to tell me they had already declined it. 3 days later husband gets a nasty call from a collection agency about a bounced check. Wants to put it back through for and amount they name. He asks if that's the face amount of the check. They lie and say yes. Turns out there was a hefty fee tacked onto the amount. Calling the bank to waive the bounced check fee - waste of time. Calling the collection agency to complain about employee who lied about amount - waste of time. I didn't cry though.

6. astonysh (1824) | 2 months ago | Hi Alice,
my condolences in your difficult situation.
I think that part of the problem is that most of us have forgotten what the role of a bank is, so for clarification:
1. A bank is a sort of casino/betting-shop. Its role is to gamble its investors' money (small and large) on stocks in the American housing market where property prices are massively overpriced, and bound to fall.
2. Its second function is to prevent investors (particular small investors) from getting their hands on their money, so that its directors can use the money to retire in luxury.
3. It is meant to be a major recipient of government handouts. It should also press for these amounts to be satisfyingly large as it is a private corporation and has to pay huge bonuses to its directors (so that they can gamble even more money on worthless stocks), and should press governments to cut socialistic practices like paying pensions, and providing school and hospital services.
4. It is absolutely not intended to provide good service to anyone with less than 1,000 (pound, euro, dollar) in their account, as these amounts will not allow the bank to indulge in widescale speculation.
And joking aside - tried talking to the Citizens Advice Bureau? Maybe someone there should be able to help. Certainly you should not have to starve yourself for other people's incompetence.

8. p1kef1sh (5629) | 2 months ago | When I was 17 I banked at the same bank as my dad. We have different initials. I was heading for overdraft so arranged to transfer £40 from my savings account to my current account. Easy. Three days later I received a stinking letter from the bank informing me that I was overdrawn, cheques would bounce, the end of the world was night etc etc. At the same time my Mum, who always does my dad's accounts happened to query a credit to their joint account of £40. You guessed right - the bank had transferred my £40 to my parent's joint account. By now it was the weekend. It just so happened that my parent's next door neighbour was the bank manager. I went next door and explained all. He was very upset, and I don't think that he even believed me at first except that Mum was with me and you don't argue with her and live! However, he promised me that it would all be put right. I received a letter from him later in the week AND he gave me a fiver for my trouble! Only time that a bank has ever apologised to me.

9. catdla1 (2616) | 2 months ago | I think that if I were in your shoes, I'd be calling the bank manager to let him know that you would be posting their new motto all over town. When he (or she) asks, "What new motto?" You reply, "(Name of Bank) - We'll spend your money so that you don't have to!"
Multiple cards, several phone calls & visits, just because they can't process an address change before mailing a card out??? Is this the same bank that charged the rediculous overdraft fee? At least you know that your money is hard at work - against you. Any other banks in the area?

catdla1 (2616) | 2 months ago | Between the fees and the hassle...I'm surprised more people aren't switching back to the coffee-can method of saving. The loss of any interest for many people is less than the savings on fees. The argument is that money in the bank is insured. Pretty darn secure if you can't even assess it yourself.

catdla1 (2616) | 2 months ago | It's all becoming clearer now. Your bank (like banks around the world) wants to keep your money and they don't want to hear any complaints about it. They want to accomplish that by not letting you buy printer ink. It's getting closer to the end of the year, and they are starting to think about those bonuses for the chief mucky-mucks at the top of the ladder....

10. leenie50 (1779) | 2 months ago | Alice,
I truly know your pain. I have been there so many times with 3 different banks and cried and got angry and any other emotion that surfaced. I worked as a bank teller for my whole adult life. Well at least 20 of those years. We didn't have to deal with these kind of problems for the most part because they hired more competent people. Now a days it seems like competency was thrown out the window in hiring new employees. I can't believe that there are so many problems within the banking system. But the biggest problem is when they blame you for it. Good luck Alice I wish you well.Hugsss leenie
