My friend fell for 2 mystery shopping scams . . . now what?! email this discussion to a friend?

I told my friend to be careful about mystery shopping as many of those companies are SCAMS . . . but she insisted the companies she "worked" for were legit. I don't know how exactly she thought they were legit, but sure enough they never paid her nor paid her back!

So now she has plans to take these two mystery shopping companies to the Labor Board . . . and thinks she will finally get her chunk of money back. Um, good luck, because I highly doubt it.

Anyone else get duped by a mystery shopping scam? Did you ever get your money back or try to anyway? glare

It's never happened to me, luckily, but I can understand how someone might fall for those. There are actually legitimate "mystery shoppers" around - we actually have quite a few of them coming into my work on a continual basis. The problem is that because there are a few legitimate mystery shopping companies out there, and because we see and hear so much about it on the news/radio/talk shows, the SCAM mystery shopping companies try to use THAT to their advantage to get people to sign up for their fradulant programs. I don't know if taking it to the labor board will do anything (I actually don't even know what the 'labor board', is, actuallY) but I'll cross my fingers for her.

I think it's important to research EXTRA good anything that you're going to invest time and money into. Yikes! Lesson learned, I suppose!

I have heard that there are legitimate mystery shopping companies, but I wouldn't know exactly which ones were "for real" - and I don't even want to look into it. But like you said, there are many scam ones out there . . . how can one really know how to sift the bad ones out? I believe my friend relied on the word of one lady (not even a friend) who supposedly had been doing this for years - how could she have trusted someone she didn't know? Anyhow, yes, doing research is worth the effort . . . but I personally would stay away from mystery shopping.

Thanks for crossing your fingers for my friend . . . she will surely need it!

I do Mystery shops, and this has never happen to me, she must have did a mystery shop though a company, that ask you to pay them, for getting you some work, I don't sign up for shops like those, the one I sign up for are free, I don't know about her getting any money back. sadthumbdownthumbdown

I don't know the names of the companies, but my friend did the type of mystery shopping where she gets the assignment, then has to fork out the money to do the shopping, and the company is supposed to reinburse her for what she bought plus pay some for the assignment. That just sounded like a scam to me, but she never listened. So now she has less money than before . . . and she's hurting! And that's why she's going to make a complaint to the Labor Board - but you just know she's not going to get her money back.
