Is Baldness in Your Crystal Ball? |
|
I recently saw some information on the news that I thought I would share. For less than $200, it is now possible to discover through a DNA test whether you are at high risk or low risk of becoming bald in the future, before there is any other indicator that it might happen. This pertains to natural loss of hair, not through illness or accident.
In the USA alone, there are approximately 100 million people who will have hair loss before the age of 60. About 60% of these folks are male and 40% female.
The DNA test, which consists of an inner cheek swab that is sent to a lab, can accurately predict at any age what your risks are. High risk means that you will likely be bald by age 60. Low risk means that you will likely retain your hair until at least age 40.
Would you consider paying for the DNA test for baldness? If you did take the test: What would you do if the risk is high for you? When would you do it? Would you do anything if the risk was low?

Statistically, women with black or dark hair will have hair that grows stronger with age, while women with red hair will have thinning hair which loses strength with age.
Aside from statistics, what is the point of knowing? For most people, nothing can be done about it. We just have to accept it if it happens and be extra thankful if it doesn't.
I can't see the point in paying for a test - or even having a test if it is free.

For me, on a scale of 1-10, this is probably a 10 in importance, as I have more hair than I now what to do with. lol But, I have also been bald 3 different times due to cancer treatments--and I know it really bothers some people to be missing their hair.

nyhollyjean (341) | 3 months ago | Yes, thea--many people can tell if they are going to lose their hair, just by looking at some of the men in their family. It is inherited through the genes of the maternal side. Even so, I find it interesting the way that works out.
In my ex-husband's family there are 3 brothers. The eldest started going bald when he about 18 and has lost most of his hair. The middle one has very thick hair mostly, but is losing some at the crown. The youngest one, who is only a year younger, has a full head of hair.
I agree with you completely about the comb-overs! Yuck! I'd much rather see them just shave it off.:-)

nyhollyjean (341) | 3 months ago | Well, I have a feeling some of their wives or girlfriends may have said something, but they refuse to listen. Men can be very vain, more so than women sometimes--especially when it comes to hair, for some reason.
My least favorite is the fellow who really only has one long strand of hair left and he winds it all around his head! One gust of wind, and it's all hanging down from one side. I don't know who they think they're fooling. Themselves, I guess.:-)

3. dawnald (10177) | 3 months ago | Something like this isn't worth the time or money for me. For one thing, my mom still had a pretty decent head of hair when she was 70. For another, there are more serious things I'd rather be screening myself for.

nyhollyjean (341) | 3 months ago | I agree, there are more important things to get screened for. Hair loss isn't life threatening as far as I know.
I was just interested because the video that I saw showed a father (age about 40) and his son, age 16. In the video, both the father and son were tested. The father showed low risk and the son showed high risk.
At age 16, it freaked the boy out a bit, but he also said that he wouldn't likely do anything about it until he actually noticed some thinning, which he hadn't yet.
Since your Mom still had most of her hair and you are female, your risk would probably be low anyway. I bet you're glad about that! lo

4. EnemyofEmpire (143) | 3 months ago | What a waste of $200. When my Dad was in his late 30's his hair started to thin but only on his crown, so I had a pretty good idea of what was ahead of me. When mine went the same way I just had my hair cut really short.
And anyway, thinning hair around the crown is directly associated with high testosterone levels - medical fact. Swings and roundabouts.

dawnald (10177) | 3 months ago | Well just for fun I went googling around looking for "bald men with long hair" thinking of coming up with a ghoulish picture I could post and instead I came up with this. Yul Brynner - bald man of the century (must have been the last century lol. I'm still kicking myself for missing my chance at seeing him in his farewell tour of The King and I. But I guess I digress...

nyhollyjean (341) | 3 months ago | Thinning around the crown and high testosterone levels---perhaps that was King Henry XIII's problem all along! Actually it's high DHT levels, not high testosterone according to what I've read.
Personally, the state of baldness on a guy makes little difference to me. It much more important what goes on INSIDE someone's head than on the outside--male or female.
Yul Brynner was amazingly sexy though!:-)
