Do you check expiry dates of goods before you buy it from stores? |
|
I always check expiry dates before i buy goods from groceries and stores. I think because i just got used to it as a habit and that was what my mom told me to do before i would try to buy something from the grocery. But last time when i tried checking the expiry of a certain canned good (which is a liver spread) i really got confused whether it is expired or not since it says that the expiry is on 111008 wherein if you would read it as mmddyy i would be november 10,2008 which would means that it has been expired already for one year. But if you would read it as yymmdd then it is still not expired since there are really some companies that sometimes put the year in the front and there are also some that put the year a the last part of the date. I think it would be best if companies would just use the usual format which is mmddyy or mmddyyyy since it would really mean a lot of difference if the month date and year is interchanged with each other. I think some companies do this intentionally since there is really no good reason for interchanging the format of the dates in the expiry date. How about you?? Do you also check expiry dates of goods before you buy it from stores? Have you also observed/experienced that sometimes companies interchange the format of the expiry dates of their products?

nrtan2000 (1027) | 3 months ago | Actually i dont just base on how an item looks to determine its quality since most store owners would always ask their merchandisers to always wipe and clean the items in their shelves so that it would look new. Sometimes even the old items are really clened up very well so that it could still be sold and sometimes they even reach to the extent of tampering the expiry dates just to sell their items rather than just throw expired items.

2. jaiho2009 (1430) | 3 months ago | Hello friend,
I also do the same,i always check the expiry and the manufactured date. With regards about the date system...yyyyddmm is usually used by EUROPIAN countries,so,better check the label of the country too.
And,also check if the can is dainted,if so,avoid it,becoz the skewed can can be easily contaminated due to possibility of air passage.

nrtan2000 (1027) | 3 months ago | Thats a good info, thanks.. I was never actually aware that different countries also use different date format. I though all the while that people just change the date format intentionally to deceive buyers and making it hard to tell if the item is expired or not.

3. sderringer (238) | 3 months ago | Out of habit, I also check the expiration dates at the grocery store. Mostly for perishable items like milk, bread, meats, etc. but I don't worry as much on canned goods because I think they last a really long time anyway. Most of the items I buy say "expires on", "use by", "best if used by" and things like that before the date so if I only saw numbers like the 111008 that you mentioned and no words by it I probably would not have considered it as an expiration date. A lot of items have other numbers on them that mean something else (not expiration). If I have any doubt at all, I just don't buy the item. So far, I have never noticed if some items have used a different date format. Thanks for bringing it up.

nrtan2000 (1027) | 3 months ago | Yes, sometimes it is really just confusing that you would have to guess if it is the manufacturing date of the expiry date. But i think if there are 2 dates the later date would usually be the expiry date and the earlier date would be the manufacturing date. But the real problem is the format of the date being use, why do they have to use dates with all numbers like 010111 instead of making the dates in words like Jan1,2009. I think it would not be hard to make such small change in their dates because some people are really particular with the expiry dates of the products that they buy.

4. rosepedal64 (1477) | 3 months ago | Hello nrtan.. I will check the expiration dates on certain things. Milk, butter, frozen foods and of course the meat. I have had some bad experiences with those kind of products in the past. So now I always make it a point to the check. I also will not things that the expiration date is the next day or two. I will buy bread products over their date. They seem to be okay. Have a great day..

nrtan2000 (1027) | 3 months ago | I think most people also do check unless they really have a keen sense of smell and taste to distinguish that a certain item is already expired by just looking at it or when they open it up. Most items i think that are already expired usually are harmful and could cause stomach ache depending on the item. I just try to avoid it before i regret it someday that i did not even try checking the expiry dates.

rosepedal64 (1477) | 3 months ago | I had a cousin who took some vitamins that was expired. She didn't realize this and then she got a major stomach pain that lasted for about 24 hours. He was then known that the vitamins is what caused her to have such pains. So in alot of things a person needs to be aware of what the date is..

nrtan2000 (1027) | 3 months ago | I guess its a hard lesson learned. I stuffs like ice creams and eggs should really be checked properly since they could really do serious damage if we eat rotten stuff like eggs and expired ice cream. I hope this does not also happen to other people. I think you could really complain to the company who sold you that ice cream and you could even get more than ice cream if proven that they were really at fault in selling you that old ice cream.

nrtan2000 (1027) | 3 months ago | I think there are really some stores that intentionally sell expired stuff and it would even be worst if they altered the expiry date which im sure some people do before selling. I heard sometimes that you could really tell if the chocolate is expired just by the way it looks when you open it but i think if you would be giving it to kids they wont bother thinking about it since it came from a trusted person whom they also trust. I think its really much better to be careful about this especially if you would be buying things as a gift to other person especially kids.

7. 1anurag1 (718) | 3 months ago | for general good i never check almost. it is some time hard to check each item. but i take care while i purchase any medicine. i always check for the expiry date of them. cause it could be very vital thing if i miss any thing.

nrtan2000 (1027) | 3 months ago | I think medicine are really very sensitive especially when it comes to expiry because you wont know what effect expired medicines could bring your body instead of making you feel much better. We even have to be more careful especially when we give medicines to kids since their immune system is still not that strong as compared to what adults have and i think they get sick much easier since they body is also sensitive at their age. Thanks for sharing 1anurag.

9. angelajoy (981) | 3 months ago | Some expiry dates could be really confusing. I don't know if the producers of these products are confusing consumers intentionally, but intended or not they should make the expiration dates clearer. I always check the expiration date of a food before buying it because it's the sensible thing to do.

| 10. kjl1229 (5) | 3 months ago | I check expiration dates on certain things at the grocery. I always check the date on dairy products. I started doing this years ago when I bought yogurt at a local grocery store and it was expired by two weeks. Nasty. Ever since then I check all dairy products and meat. I don't normally check canned goods, but I haven;t had a problem with those items before.
