Because it's unnecessary to train for something that is situational. There's a big chance you won't need to defend yourself against physical attack in your life with avoiding confrontations. I train it because I always loved it but I wouldn't call it necessary.

here is your answer dear friend in your question. you have said MARTIAL ARTS. yes it is an art and there are 64 types of art according to hinduism and self defence is also considered as an art. if you achieve this art then it is an extra addition to your life. thanks.

The best way of defending yourself is gun,not martial arts.Chinese think the aim of training martial arts is to make progress at character and bodybuilding.

I don't think it's necessary for a full study of the martial arts but a self defense course would always be a good idea. Unfortunately many people have the "It couldn't happen to me or around here " attitude & don't seem to realize it CAN. Then there's the ones that think someone else ( mostly the police ) should protect them. What they fail to realize is the police only come AFTER the crime when it's already too late. Then there are the people who just feel violence is never the answer ( also known as the walking bulls-eyes ).

Personally I think it should be one of the courses taught in schools along about the middle school level.

Martial Arts is necessary in life, but in the ancient age. Although it protects us


from sudden theft attacks, it's not powerful enough to avoid gunshots.
Under certain situations, it's crucial to learn martial arts (e.g.police officers escape criminal's grasp by Martial arts).

However, we are civilians and fighting is uncommon in our surroundings, unless our job requires fighting.

I think it's because most people woudn't want to admit they need to train in martial arts of self-defense to defend themselve as it would devalidate their ego as they see themselves as though or whatever, that apply mostly to guys I guess!!
