Friends who borrow things and don't give them back email this discussion to a friend?

I have a friend who I loaned something of mine, which is fairly expensive. I thought I could trust him with it, but now he is claiming he has no way to get over here to bring it back.

So I say, I'll come get it, and now he avoids me. He wont answer my calls, or return my messages. I'm feeling like I'm never going to get my stuff back!

I will see him around family functions, so I'm going to say something to him. But, what would you say to someone who was doing that to you?

in my opinion, your friend will not return yours. If it is expensive, you could call for the help by police.

i have more problems with people wanting to store things here and never picking them up.i've had a table saw in my garage about 15 years now i'm about ready to sell because they've done nothing to frequent requests to pick up.

but to answer your question-
i tell my friends point blank i don't loan things-for that very reason.
it sounds harsh on the surface, but prevents a lot of bad blood later.
i am however, more than happy to give away things i don't need or have spares of.

This really annoys me... angry
I have had this happen to me, and it is very annoying.
I would keep on at him, to return your things, or even tell him, you will report him for theft, if he does not return it.
Also, make it very clear, never!! to ask you again, to borrow anything, as the answer will be no!
You cannot trust this person, so never lend to him again.
Some people have no morals, and we learn the hard way.
Been there, done that.. thumbdown
Good luck with getting your things back.

I hate friends who borrow my things and never give them back. I don't have many friends who borrow things from me, but I had a friend who used to borrow money from me and never game me back. Whenever I reminded her about the money, she just ignored it or told that he doesn't have money. ATM is in the ground floor of my office and if she wants she can go there and take money to give to me. Now, I stoppped talking to her.

Well,in the first place you shouldn't trust someone you dont know and that if this is as valuable as you say you shouldn't even bother giving it away,i wouldn't do that, well if thats the case call the police, just kidding anyway just try contacting him somehow or if you know his place,go and show him or teach him a lesson or two, i will sure go haunt him,if i were to know his address..

I don't loan expensive things, out to family or friends, I am very hard on my things, and I think that friend of yours, that avoids you, he probably don't have the item that you loaned him, that is why he is avoiding you, and he don't know how to tell you, he don't have it or he loan it out, to some one else, or the item make be broke, that is why it is not good, to loan thing out to careless people. sadthumbdownthumbdown

Yes, it happened to me too. So, I always give everybody only one chance & if he lives up to my expectations, good for him otherwise I am compelled to avoid him.
Now, your case is a little different, i.e, you lend an 'expensive' thing which you shouldn't have done in the first case. Hence, you try your best in the most polite manner & leave the rest to God.

Unfortunately, this is onle of the most difficult lessons for a person to learn. I learned several years ago that I shouldn't loan something (money or material object) to a person if I ever wanted to have it back. That is the reason that today I don't loan money to people if I am going to need it in the future and it is the reason that I won't loan an object to a person if I still use it (if even just occasionally). Depending on the value of the thing that you loaned to the the person you may be able to contact the police about it and file a theft by unlawful taking charge against them. However, I would only do that if you intend to never be this person's friend again.

Anyone who borrows something should always send it back to the owner. Never own things which are not yours. That is really a rude thing to do. I will never lend that person ever again and try to warn others about him.

I think the thing that he lends to you was broken or lost because he can't give it back to you anymore. Make him pay for it instead. He is just making excuses, thinking that you will soon get tired of asking for it back.

I have ex-friends who have done that. I say ex friends not because I fell out with them for keeping my stuff, but because we eventually lost touch which makes me think we were never really very good friends at all!

Most of the stuff I've lost are things like videos and CDs. I did lend a video my Brother had bought me for my birthday when he was really young and still at school so he would have saved his pocket money to buy it. I watched it once, and lent it, expecting to fully get it back a few days later after he (my "friend") had watched it but I never got it back even after reminding him many times. I've not heard from him in years now and I don't even know how to contact him. Losing the video my Brother bought me still upsets me now to be honest, and I'm a fully grown adult. That video would be worth more to me than something I'd spent a lot of money on myself.

Sometimes that happens to me with my friends. Anyways, the friends who did that to me I just got rid of because they can't be responsible..

SantaPants (42)   ranked 22,264 out of 35,110 in people  1 month ago

Non of my friends I have now do this to me. It probably show generally that they're not very responsible and that might generally lead to a lost friendship.
