1. dpk262006 (9062) | 3 months ago | Hi! When I read the title of your discussion, I got startled because the meaning of butt says - To hit or push against with the head or horns. However, when I read the entire discussion I could get the exact meaning. Like you too, when we were children we did not like butt of bread. However, now we ourselves have become parents and know the cost of bread, because we go and buy it. We prefer not to waste our bread and we use its first and the last piece, to the extent possible. If you bake these pieces pefectly, it gives you some good taste.

It is true that many do not bother to read the entire contents of a discussion and they simply write their response on the basis of 'heading' and leave it for the host to scratch his/her head to decipher the same.........LOL!

2. 2timothy (395) | 3 months ago | It makes me wonder why people treat them differently when all of them were baked together from the same lump of flour. Like your youngest son, I love them too because it's crunchier to eat than the rest of the loaf, and putting the two ends together would make a pie.

sacmom (5868) | 3 months ago | Maybe it's because the pieces tend to be smaller (at least store bought bread anyway) and the texture isn't the same as the rest of the bread as it is mostly crust.
I don't think I've ever tried to put both end pieces together before. Interesting!

3. victorywp (297) | 3 months ago | when i was a little boy, i was not being encouraged to eat the first & last of the bread. the reason is, my whole family of 4 will never finish a bread & it would be a waste to throw away the center part instead of the front & end part.
but when i reached my youth, i remember i went for a training at somewhere far away from my home & lived with the others. there, we were taught to take the first piece if we came first, followed by the others, until the last. there's no leftovers & everyone should eat everything being served.
as for now, i won't say that it is the best part of worst part of the bread. i just eat all of them.:)

Happy mylotting!

5. missybear (2181) | 3 months ago | It doesn't really matter to me. It tastes the same it's just a little smaller than the rest. If I just want 1 piece of toast and not a whole sandwich I go for the butt. I also like the end pieces of meatloaf or a roast.

8. GardenGerty (20349) | 3 months ago | Where I grew up we called it the heel. Funny thing is, they are now finding that the crusts of bread are healthier for you, so the heel would be extra healthy. I like it okay, but it does not do well in the toaster.

10. carolbee (6748) | 3 months ago | Most of the time I skip it and move onto the next slice. It is very tasty but most often chewy. I use to eat so many more sandwiches growing up and didn't like the end but if it was the very last of the bread, I ate it.
