end of the bread? rasp LOL

For those of you that may not know what that is, it is the end of the bread that no one usually wants and is located at the beginning and the end of the loaf. Also known as the first and last piece of bread as defined in the urban dictionary:

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=butt+bread

Growing up I never cared for the end pieces of the bread. I thought they were lousy for making sandwiches and didn't taste quite the same as the other pieces. LOL As it is, I still don't really care for them, but I'll eat them if they are there. What's funny though is that my youngest son loves the butt end of the bread. He thinks it's the best part of all! LOL

So, what about you? Do you like the butt end? Or do you not care for it?

Please share your thoughts. happy

Hi!
When I read the title of your discussion, I got startled because the meaning of butt says - To hit or push against with the head or horns. However, when I read the entire discussion I could get the exact meaning. Like you too, when we were children we did not like butt of bread. However, now we ourselves have become parents and know the cost of bread, because we go and buy it. We prefer not to waste our bread and we use its first and the last piece, to the extent possible. If you bake these pieces pefectly, it gives you some good taste.

myLot reputation of 98/100. sacmom (5868)   ranked 4 out of 344 in bread  3 months ago

Really? And here I thought it meant a large cask for wine, beer, or ale. LOL Just kidding! There's actually several meanings, I picked that one out just for the hell of it! wink LOL

I'm glad you read the rest of the discussion so that you knew what I actually meant. Some people don't bother to do that. They just look at the title and respond from there. confused

That's very true. Once we become parents we don't want to waste any food.

Happy mylotting!

myLot reputation of 92/100. dpk262006 (9062)   ranked 119 out of 344 in bread  3 months ago

Yes, when we become parents, we get to know value of everything and money of course. It is true that many do not bother to read the entire contents of a discussion and they simply write their response on the basis of 'heading' and leave it for the host to scratch his/her head to decipher the same.........LOL!

It makes me wonder why people treat them differently when all of them were baked together from the same lump of flour. Like your youngest son, I love them too because it's crunchier to eat than the rest of the loaf, and putting the two ends together would make a pie.

myLot reputation of 98/100. sacmom (5868)   ranked 4 out of 344 in bread  3 months ago

Maybe it's because the pieces tend to be smaller (at least store bought bread anyway) and the texture isn't the same as the rest of the bread as it is mostly crust.

I don't think I've ever tried to put both end pieces together before. Interesting!

when i was a little boy, i was not being encouraged to eat the first & last of the bread. the reason is, my whole family of 4 will never finish a bread & it would be a waste to throw away the center part instead of the front & end part.

but when i reached my youth, i remember i went for a training at somewhere far away from my home & lived with the others. there, we were taught to take the first piece if we came first, followed by the others, until the last. there's no leftovers & everyone should eat everything being served.

as for now, i won't say that it is the best part of worst part of the bread. i just eat all of them.:)

myLot reputation of 98/100. sacmom (5868)   ranked 4 out of 344 in bread  3 months ago

Yep, the same goes here. We eat all of it too. Though I do try to save the end pieces for my youngest as he likes them so much.

Happy mylotting!

It doesn't really matter to me. It tastes the same it's just a little smaller than the rest. If I just want 1 piece of toast and not a whole sandwich I go for the butt.
I also like the end pieces of meatloaf or a roast.

Hello my friend happy

How are you?

I actually like it, I think its unfair to throw the ends away, I also give it to my grandson, he use to say grandma I don't want that not anymore lol, he eats it and so do I, there is a difference in the taste but its o.k still worth eating to me.

Thank you my friend.

myLot reputation of 98/100. sacmom (5868)   ranked 4 out of 344 in bread  3 months ago

I agree, it's still worth eating to me too. happy

Hello my friend happy

I heard the ends are better for you, now this could be said to get people to eat it, I am not sure but either way I will never throw it out. thumbup

Thanks my friend.

Where I grew up we called it the heel. Funny thing is, they are now finding that the crusts of bread are healthier for you, so the heel would be extra healthy. I like it okay, but it does not do well in the toaster.

myLot reputation of 98/100. sacmom (5868)   ranked 4 out of 344 in bread  3 months ago

A heel? I don't think I've ever heard it be called that before! lol I have heard that it's healthier though. thumbup

I’ve always loved the butt end of the bread and I am the only the one in my family which is great so I don’t have to fight anybody for it! I prefer it toasted because it is usually thicker and I love thick toast. I love making sandwiches with the butt ends; it’s like a little roll, yum!happy

myLot reputation of 98/100. sacmom (5868)   ranked 4 out of 344 in bread  3 months ago

Well then consider yourself lucky! LOL I try to save them for my youngest, but sometimes my husband ends up getting to them first! At least my oldest doesn't care for them, or there'd be more competition for these pieces of bread! lol LOL

Most of the time I skip it and move onto the next slice. It is very tasty but most often chewy. I use to eat so many more sandwiches growing up and didn't like the end but if it was the very last of the bread, I ate it.

myLot reputation of 98/100. sacmom (5868)   ranked 4 out of 344 in bread  3 months ago

Most of the time I skip it too. But now I skip it for a different reason. To save it for my youngest child, of course. happy
