Wishing all my Canadian friends "Happy Thanksgiving!"   email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 83/100. hornswaggled (2074) 3 years ago

So today is the Canadian Thanksgiving...and I am wanting everyone to wish them all a great day!
I was thinking of our Thanksgiving coming up and it occurred to me that I don't know anything about the Canadian Thanksgiving at all...and so I thought I'd ask our friends here that are from that beautiful part of our north American continent what your day is like.
Do you eat turkey like we do? And pumpkin pie and do the football laying around thing?
Do you celebrate your thankfulness of living through a hard winter like our forefathers did?
Could you explain it to all us "southern" relatives of our great continent?

Yep, hornswaggled, we eat (or should I say over -eat) all of the same foods and many people watch the football games. Turkey, stuffing, ham, mashed pottoes, and too many salads, vegetables and desserts to name. Add in coffee, tea and assorted beverages, and there you have it.

I have celebrated both versions (with my American cousins) and I think the US tends to attach more meaning to the holiday than we do. It just seems to be a bigger celebration, from what I have seen anyways.

myLot reputation of 83/100. hornswaggled (2074)  3 years ago

That's interesting....is it the same type of meaning? I mean does it celebrate the thanksgiving of a long hard winter in a new world?

myLot reputation of 96/100. malamar (535)   ranked 1,136 out of 1,331 in friends  3 years ago

I can only speak for my family of course, but I have never attached the meaning of "the long hard winter" aspect to it. Ours is more of a give thanks for the abundance that we have, the love of friends and family, and the appreciation of life as we know it.

I was kidding about the football, I don't even know if there is football on tv right now, but I do know that the weekend of the American Thanksgiving, many of us (not including me) are glued to your football offerings! We don't have the parades like you do, we will wait until next month and watch yours - LOL

myLot reputation of 83/100. hornswaggled (2074)  3 years ago

Well they can have all the football on they want....I wouldn't watch it if that was all there was...and it really is pretty much all there is on the local channels.
I do love to give thanks for all the great family and friends I have....it's always been one of my favorite times of year!

I forgot they had their Thanksgiving earlier than us.

I want to wish all the Canadians on MyLot a Happy Thanksgiving.

Thanks for reminding me, hornswaggled. I have a couple of Canadian friends on other forum and will wish them a Happy Thanksgiving also.

myLot reputation of 83/100. hornswaggled (2074)  3 years ago

I actually got reminded by a friend who married a Canadian recently....so I'm glad to be able to pass it on to our northern friends....

Happy Thanksgiving to my canadian friends. I didn't know it was Thanksgiving for them until I came on here and read it. Our Thanksgiving isn't until next month. I hope everyone that is celebrating today has a nice time.

myLot reputation of 83/100. hornswaggled (2074)  3 years ago

I love Thanksgiving...anytime and anywhere...maybe it's just the food or maybe it's the fellowship but for whatever reason it's a great time of year!

Gratitude is just plain good for the soul! Food or no food involved. happy

myLot reputation of 83/100. hornswaggled (2074)  3 years ago

It is isn't it? I guess I just love an excuse to get with friends and to celebrate this life that God gave me. And to appreciate all that He's done for me and mine.
I'm glad to be able to say it here too...and not have the fear that people don't understand or are suspicious of my beliefs!

hi sorry guess I should have reread your discussion as I am just another American wondering why Canada is celebrating thanksgiving now but then realizing that that is their Thanksgiving day,so am taking up your time here,I also wonder just what they eat and
What is traditional for them? we get so stuck in our own traditions we do not always remember others have completely different traditions, and that is one reason I love mylot so much is to learn from other countries.

myLot reputation of 83/100. hornswaggled (2074)  3 years ago

That's me too....I forget sometimes we are not the center of the universe! I am really glad someone reminded me of this very special day for our friends.

thank you so much i really appreciate that. i like the time to reflect and be thankful for all that i have. canadian thanksgiving is basically the same as the american one i think, complete with turkey and all.

myLot reputation of 83/100. hornswaggled (2074)  3 years ago

That's neat! I didn't realize you all had a Thanksgiving like we did....I love that we have some things in common!

I hadnt got a clue that Canada had a Thanksgiving day so it just proves that on this great web site we do indeed learn new things we didnt have knowledge of before.
Happy Thanksgiving to all my Canadian Chumns, both of them, well one really but never mind, one is better than none, I think.

myLot reputation of 83/100. hornswaggled (2074)  3 years ago

I don't have a great deal of them either but they are very special to me just the same!
I am appalled that I didn't realize they had this celebration til someone told me about it!
I guess I'm just an ignorant American....sigh....I'm working on it though!

Thanks and the turkey was delicious. My understanding is that we borrowed the concept of Thanksgiving Day from our more southerly brothers. The reason we keep it earlier is because of the shorter growing season. Celebrating a bountiful harvest doesn't make a lot of sense if you just might already be locked into an early winter.

myLot reputation of 83/100. hornswaggled (2074)  3 years ago

Really?!!? I love that you borrowed it from us! Thanks for the big smile you just gave me!
I sure am getting to love Canada more and more....and it's wonderful people!thumbup

hi, i live in china, and many of us do not know about thanks-giving day. i know it because i was majoring english in my college and we learnt the english-spoken festivals. but right now many of us know about the day, and we would send a text message to friends, falimilies and lover. that's the way we spend the day, never a turkey:)

myLot reputation of 83/100. hornswaggled (2074)  3 years ago

I'll bet this is an interesting thing to learn about isn't it? I did not know that Canada celebrated it either....I thought it was a purely north American thing.....live and learn I guess!
