 I seemed to have developed a liking for birds over the years. My favourite bird is the humming bird. I think they are absolutely fascinating and amazing little creatures! I could watch them for hrs.! Here are some amazing facts about them, and why I find them so amazing! Do you like birds? What kind do you like and why?Humming birds are:Very aggressive and territorial birds. (always the little ones eh?!)
Their hearts beat up to 1260 beats per min.
They flap their wings 50 to 200 times a sec.
Their flight speed can average up to 25-30 mph and they are able to dive up to 60mph.
Their brain is 4.2% of their body weight which is proportionally the largest in the bird kingdom.
Aside from nectar,they will eat bugs and spiders, they have even been known to pull gnats out of thin air.
They can rotate their wings in a circle, allowing them to be the only bird that can fly up down, backwards and forwards, sideways or just hover in thin air, they can also fly short distances upside down which is a defense when under the attack of other birds.
Their normal resting heart beat is 480 beats per min.
30% of their weight is made up of flight muscles.

I dont think there is any of those birds here in the philippines so i guess i would never see one unless i visit a country that has them.

Humming birds are beautiful thank you for the information on them. Did you know you can purchase Hummingbird feeders? Walmart has them you fill the feeder with specail food for the birds. It's a nectar which I thought interesting to use instead of birdseed. Now that I have the bird feeder I have been lucky enough to see a few of the birds.

I developed the same interest several years ago and hung my entire back yard with feeders of differnt shapes and sizes. Humming birds do come to the Morning Glories and Petunias that grow,sometimes right outside my kitchen window. It's fascinating to watch them.
However, I think I like the Goldfinch and Cardinals that come to the feeders. The colors are beautiful and they have a nice,relaxing chirp. Believe it or not, in late spring, I also get some passing Wild Canaries on migration. Thier colors are equally brilliant!

By the way, any tips on keeping squirrels away from the feeders? I don't mind feeding them, but they eat the birds out of house and home!!! | |

| shiloh62 (29) | 4 weeks ago | Allright!!! A friend just told me yesterday that he drills holes in the top and bottom of plastic film containers and small, lidded cans and puts them around pole feeders.
When the suirrels try to climb up, they just spin around, and the little finks can't reach the feeders. Think I'll give it a try. Maybe they'll take the hint and stick to the corn and peanuts I give them. | |
