green IT is an exciting new field of sustainable computing. How many of you are aware of green IT? Are there any green IT initiatives happening in your company?

Going green is for the bigger companies. They need to spend to go green. Small and medium companies (SMEs) are trying to survive in this current economic state and very unlikely to go green because the primary and basic concern is still the bottom-line. Instead of printing hardcopied reports, it would be a blessing if they can accept paperless computing.

But going green can also be a great avenue for saving money. We did server consolidation in our company and we saved millions of rupees by reducing the number of servers and ensuring that the peak load of the servers are reached.
So instead of thinking of Green IT as an expenditure if companies start using it as means to reduce cost, I think the whole effort would be a win win for the company as well as the environment.
