Do your kids still eat recipes you created for them when they were little? email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (660)   ranked 45 out of 1,293 in family2 months ago

My little one is nearly 5 but still I cook some of the recipes I created when she was started eating the high er stages of solid foods.

Like today for lunch, she requested carrot and broccoli couscous. I finely grate carrots and broccoli with a little butter, and mix it with couscous. It's always a good way to get vegetables in her.

I still also make "mommy's pizza". The crust is whole wheat bread. Then I take pizza sauce from Trader Joe's, and add chopped spinach. I top it with sliced black olives and roasted mushrooms - with grated string cheese (or mozzarella cheese) and toast it altogether in the toaster oven.

I certainly used a lot of tactics to happily get vegetables in her - hee hee - but hey, they still work and I'm not complaining!

Do you still cook super simple, but nutritious recipes like this for your kids?

I had to answer this because I do cook "baby" foods for my girls, but My mother still makes some of her concoctions for my siblings and I and not one of is still at home! The youngest is 24. Actually there are a few her and my Pop still like and they make them even if none of us are there. Couscous was a big one in our home. My mother and aunt would add sweet peas, sweat ed onions and Parmesan cheese to them. I think we all still make this as aside dish.

My kids are still very young I haven't came up with any ideas yet.

OpinionatedLady - I never really got into couscous until I started cooking for my little one! I don't think I even knew what couscous was when I was little! It's lovely adding anything to couscous - it blends quite well to most anything (great for kids!). And parmesan cheese to anything is always a hit. Do you make your parents old concoctions?

Those sound really good by the way. I still cook most of the same things the kids ate when they were younger. The kids have always loved tuna noodle casserole from the moment they could feed themselves. So I still make that over the summer when they are home from school and on days when they are out of school for some reason. I also make tomatoe soup with grilled cheese they really like that and don't mind at all if I use whole grain bread. They also like this super healthy soup that I make. They try and pick out some of the veggies but what they don't know is that the broth is made up of all kinds of veggies, they slurp that up like it is chocolate milk.

I also love hiding the vegetables in soup, either by pulverising them in the blender or making a stock from the vegetables and using that in the soup! Works a treat. happy

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (660)   ranked 45 out of 1,293 in family  2 months ago

Ohhh - tuna noodle casserole sounds so good to me - I haven't made that in a while - so thank you for the reminder! It's so good and you could make a lot of it all at once to last your family a while. I use the No Yolk egg noodles for the added protein. Oh yes, and grilled cheese is always a hit too - we use whole wheat bread but not whole grain (we haven't found one that's favorable to my little one - hee hee). My little one isn't in to soup for some reason, but I agree that's a great way to get those veggies in - especially if your kids love it! I am successful with adding veggies to my spaghetti sauce - the veggies meld into the liquid even if she picks out what she doesn't want!

I like your recipes, the pizza one sounds especially yummy. I'll have to try that! My daughter's only three now, but there's a very simple dish that we make together that I think she'll still like even when she's older. (I love it too, a great comfort food!) It's a variation on French toast (or eggy bread, as I used to call it) that I saw on a kids' programme.

It's called egg-in-a-nest. You take a slice of bread, get an egg-cup and use it to cut a hole in the bread. That's my daughter's first job. Her second is to eat the little circular piece of bread! Then I put some oil in a pan, put the bread into it and crack an egg into the hole. Cook for a little while (depending on how you like your eggs), then carefully turn over with a spatula and cook a bit more. And there you have it, egg-in-a-nest! happy

You can serve it savoury with tomato ketchup, or add some sugar or syrup. It's very yummy!

I wrote a hub about some other simple (and mostly nutritious!) recipes that we make sometimes. http://hubpages.com/_x8qo...

That sounds so cute - and besides the food factor, what a great activity to do together with your little one! I suppose you can use a cookie cutter and make different shapes for the cut out! We just make the plain eggy bread - but admittedly we haven't made it in a while. A note on the ketchup: for added nutrition, I always added pureed carrot to it - and you can't taste the difference for the most part!! Thanks for sharing the egg-in-a-nest recipe!!

My, now, adult children still request dishes I made for them when they were young.
They especially like my version of tuna casserole, sometimes even without the tuna.
I did a simple boneless chicken recipe, with a breading made of wheat germ that was not only healthy, but good. I served it at their birthday parties. They also request Caesar salad and the vinaigrette dressing I make. I got a recipe for a mashed potato casserole on one of the talk shows from long ago, and my daughter always requests it for Thanksgiving dinner. I also always baked Whoppie Pies for them, and they always want them now.

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (660)   ranked 45 out of 1,293 in family  2 months ago

Ah, another tuna casserole person . . . I love tuna casserole! That's a good idea to use wheat germ for breading - I never thought of that. Caesar salad is actually my favorite too (my little one likes the dressing anyway - but I haven't made a homemade version of it yet). Mashed potato is always a hit with kids - I'll have to find a recipe like that online! I'll also have to look up Whoppie Pies . . . sounds familiar and they're probably good! Nothing like mom's recipes (I hope my child thinks that way she gets older!).

Hi much2say,

My children eat whatever food I give. I most probably cook all types of vegetables,
I give preference to vegetables while cooking with less oil and boiled vegetables and my children do eat raw vegetables like carrots, beetroots etc., they like them very much. So I am not worried about their food.

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (660)   ranked 45 out of 1,293 in family  2 months ago

That's great your kids will eat everything - particularly vegetables!! Raw is even better than cooked. How are they with proteins/ meats? In any case, they sound like healthy eaters and it will most likely stay with them the rest of their lives.

KMaroon (50)   ranked 721 out of 1,293 in family  2 months ago

Hi much2say,
We are vegetarians so our children too eat more vegetables, and obviously all the milk products. My daughter is very fond of curd which she prefers more. They eat all types of Dals which give lot of proteins. Thanks for your reply, have a nice day.

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (660)   ranked 45 out of 1,293 in family  2 months ago

Oh, ok - that makes sense! Well, the more vegetables, the merrier! Sounds like your kids are very healthy eaters! happy

Two of my children are grown up with their own families and still cook liver and onions, bacon roly poly.sheperds pie, toad in the hole, yes they cook the lot, other things as well. They can make most things up from scratch, sometimes you wonder if you ever had any influence over the kids but when you son cooks the same as you, suddenly you realise you did something right, bless them. They make curries and stews their partners really like the food.Plenty of fresh veg and fresh meat if possible thats what they grew up on and still eat it know.Mine are a lot older than yours, just enjoy them at least they like healthy food and not a lot of junk rubbish.

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (660)   ranked 45 out of 1,293 in family  2 months ago

That's wonderful that your "kids" are cooking the same as you . . . I'll bet it makes you feel so proud! I guess we cook what we are most familiar with - especially the comfort foods that we grew up with. You remind me that I haven't made shepherds pie in a long time . . . that has meat and veggies in it! Oh and I personally love curries and stews too (though my little one doesn't care for curry - yet). Well, my little one has her share of liking certain junk foods, but we do try to stay away from it as much as possible. Home cooking is the best!

myLot reputation of 95/100. suzzy3 (3950)   ranked 162 out of 1,293 in family  2 months ago

A bit of junk won't hurt especially if you are pushed for time.It is the kids that eat it everyday, take away kids are taken from us sooner. thumbup

I agree - a little bit of fast food isn't so bad. As long as THAT is not what she remembers the most about her childhood eating - hee hee!

My sons are grown but still like some of the dishes i have been fixing them all their lives. I think it's great to keep up the traditions u started them out on.I was the same way by what my grandmother's started me out on. I like to say i'm making memories w/my granson when i do special things for him. He is 5 & he always has to have something when he comes to my house, i love it.

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (660)   ranked 45 out of 1,293 in family  2 months ago

What are some of those dishes? Are some of them the very dishes that your grandmother used to cook for you? It is wonderful to have family food traditions that you can pass along. My mother does the same for my little one - it's very special!

myLot reputation of 93/100. ANTIQUELADY (11284)   ranked 1 out of 1,293 in family  2 months ago

It's mostly just good ol' southern cooking. macaroni & cheese, goulosh, a dish w/hambuger, tomatoes, onions & macaroni, chicken & fressing, white beans fried corn, fried chicken to just name a few. both of my grandmother's were great cooks & i like to think a little of it rubbed off on me.

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (660)   ranked 45 out of 1,293 in family  2 months ago

Ahhh, that real Southern home cooking sounds divine! I don't know if I've had the real stuff before, but certainly those who get it at home sure love it! I'm sure there are cherished family recipes in your household . . . it's nice you have that and can pass them on to the next generation!

My little one is 22 years old and works full time plus goes to school full time. She calls me from time to time to come over for lunch with mom. She requests some of her old childhood favorites like grilled cheese sandwich with dill pickle on the side or soup, top ramen and a sandwich. The other day she had a request for mom's peanut Butter Krunchies. I would make these from time to time as she was growing up. I gladly made them for her and she was happy. Besides with her busy schedule it was a good time for a mother daughter visit.

Peanut Butter Crunchies
5c. corn flakes
1/2 c. corn syrup
1/2 c.sugar
1 c. peanut butter
Stir sugar and corn syrup together and put on stove over med heat. Mix till it is clear. Add peanut butter and continue stirring. Take off stove and add corn flakes and mix together. Put in 9 x 13 pan and put in refrig for 1 hour. Take out and cut into squares. They are delicious. Your family will love them.

That sounds too cute! You and your "little one" seem to have such a nice relationship. How wonderful it must feel that she still requests her childhood favorites - the taste of home is priceless. Thank you for the Peanut Butter Cruchies recipe . . . I've never heard of them, but sure sounds like something kids would love.
