Parenting a grandchild is different. |
| |
| Those who know me, know that I am a 52 year old grump who is also a grumpa parenting a now 5 year old grandson. My wife and I did our time, paid our dues and surprise... We are doing it again. Well we all know that when life hands you lemons, you make lemonade. We got a grandson to raise, I got maturity onset MS and my wife's store got a downturn in the economy. I am the house husband and primary care giver to a 5 year old boy. Ladies, you all know how much of a challenge that would be don't you. Mind you, it's easy for you. God allowed you to be natural multitaskers, and equipped you with unimaginable patience. It's a cake walk for you..only one kid... Anyway, old poppa here (AKA Crusty Old Curmudgeon)has been trying really hard to keep him stimulated. At 5 he reads well. Is adding, subtracting and now working on multiplying. We tell him that multiplying is just fast adding and he goes with it. But then there are the artsy crafty thingies that you moms do and dads go "What the hell is that? Oh. Uhh nice. What's for dinner?"So I try to remember some of the things I did in school. Have you got any idea at all how long it's been since I did paper mache? A long long time! But I remember taking tin foil and putting over my face and pressing it in until I had the contours of my face in the foil. So we did this to my grandson. Here is his mask. A work in progress, started just today. I used 2 parts water, 1 part flour and a teaspoon of salt. And two crayons with the paper removed where the nose holes go. And newspaper cut into strips. This was just today. A few more days like this and he can have his own Halloween mask. I am beginning to wonder who is going to be more excited. Him or me. | | Paper mache mask in progress | | | | |

| | Well Grumpa, you doin' good. You got farther with that mask than what I remember. You didn't make a call and ask the other half how to get started? I don't even recall the tin foil impression. Cool! | | | | | | |

| | Nope. The internet is wonderful. I got the paste recipe in about 5 minutes searching. My memory is pretty good for that because I enjoyed making it so much. | | | |

| | First I have to object to one thing you said... It's not "easy" for us. lol I actually don't have an unlimited amount of patience. I have a LOT, sometimes, but I do run out. That being said. I think it's amazing that you are staying home with your grandson. The mask idea is a great one. I hope you are both enjoying the process. | | | | | | |

| | As good fortune would have it, Jason's 'Show and Tell' day is the 30th. Just before Halloween. It was fun actually. And way easier than I remember. | | | |
