A good friend of mine has a retarded daughter, that is the down syndrome. They are known before are mongoloids. They look similar to each other. The child now 21 years old is pitiful but many times she brings us joy. When she was still a child, she's very graceful in dancing, as if she has no bones, and she could dance to the beat of the music.

Down syndrom was first described in 1866. The cause of Down syndrome (trisomy 21) was discovered in 1959. Down syndrome is relatively well known, with distinctive characteristics such as mental retardation, distinguishing facial features, and other traits. In the United States, Down syndrome occurs in 1 in 800 live births, and approximately 6000 children are born with Down syndrome each year. About 85% of infants with Down syndrome survive 1 year, and 50% of people with Down syndrome live longer than 50 years.
Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by extra genetic material (DNA) (ie, presence of an extra 21st chromosome). Chromosomes, which are microscopic thread-like structures that are present in every cell of the body except red blood cells, carry genes. Genes are necessary for development. Human cells normally have 46 chromosomes that can be arranged in 23 pairs. One set of 23 chromosomes comes from the mother (egg cell or ovum) and the other half of the 23 pairs comes from the father (sperm cell).
Trisomy 21
In Down syndrome, 95% of all cases are caused by either the sperm or the egg cell having two 21st chromosomes instead of one, so the resulting fertilized egg has three 21st chromosomes. Hence the scientific name, trisomy 21. Recent research has shown that in these cases, approximately 90% of the time the abnormal cells are the eggs. The cause of the extra chromosome isn't known, but there is definitely connection with the mother's age

Down syndrome is a genetic condition that manifests in a number of problems. To understand how this genetic condition results, here is a brief overview of chromosomes and the like first.chromosomes are structures that contain genes that determines different traits of a person- which is something like a blueprint of a person.each person has 46 chromosomes-23 from the father and 23 from the mother- out of which 2 are x-linked chromosomes that determine gender. now these 46 chromosomes arrange into pairs so there are 23 pairs of chromosomes.
in down syndrome what happens is that there is a problem at chromosome number 21.that is that instead of a pair of chromosomes, there are 3 chromosomes present,so there are 47 chromosomes in total.this extra chromosome is seen at chromosome number 21 only for down syndrome.now, where did this extra chromosome come from?either the mother or father due to something called 'non disjunction' which is the situation where the chromosomes do not seperate correctly during cell division (mitosis and meiosis).it is usually maternal contribution rather than paternal.and down syndrome is associated with an increased age of the mother at conception.
so what does that extra chromosome at position 21 do?many many things.these include impairment of growth, many physical abnormalities including some characteristic facial features such as a broad forehead, characteristic eye shape, partially opened mouth and so on.also cognitive ability (or thinking ability) is affected which can be mild to very severe where there is mental retardation. this is really a very general gist of down syndrome, ofcourse there are many complications and a lot more to it.
unfortunately down syndrome is quite common, occuring in approximately one in every thousand births.however, there are pre natal genetic tests available to detect this condition.
for families with a down syndrome baby, it is important to provide a lot of care and attention for the child and help the child grow in a supportive environment. for parents-it can be extremely hard at times to cope with a down syndrome child, but support groups are of great help.
