Did you become what you wanted to be when you grew up? email this discussion to a friend?

I wanted to be everything when I grew up . . . but I changed my mind a lot.

I wanted to become an artist at one point, but everyone in my family told me I could never make my money being one (and my dad said that only people who are slightly insane become artists) so I put the thoughts of becoming an artist in the back burner.

After wanting to be a zillion other things for many years, at the end of high school I decided art was my thing - against my family wishes. I went to college and got an art degree - and got a job in graphics before I graduated. And I was in that field for many years! And because of my art interests, I met my future husband - who is also an artist.

So in that sense, I did become what I wanted to be . . . how about you?

Well, congratulations. Most people do not end up with what they wanted to be. Take me

for instance. I wanted to be a journalist one day, but end up taking Bachelor of

Science in Nursing since it's what my mom wants me to take up. Getting no choice

at all, since she is going to pay for my college, that's what I did.

But, it doesn't end there. Maybe in the next few years, I would go back to college

(Wee!) And take up journalism. Maybe it's time for me to be accomplish and fulfill

my goals..

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (606)   ranked 136 out of 19,055 in questions & answers  1 month ago

You know, I actually got into college as a journalism major. In high school I was all about journalism . . . but the last semester I decided creative arts rather than writing was more my thing. Well, it's good you have a nursing degree - it's a good field to get into (which is probably why your mom wanted you to do it). But I hope you get to get another degree in journalism one day too to fulfill your goals!

Unfortunately, I did not. I always wanted to be a doctor from my earliest memory, and I did get as far as pre-med. I was in a horrible marriage and I finally gave up trying. I do work in the medical field, but I have always wondered how my life would be if I had suceeded in achieving my dream.

joeyzeng1979 (3)  1 month ago

me too, I wanted to be a soldier from my childhood, but my parents hoped me to be a docotor .when I grew up, till now, I am not a soldier, nor a doctor.I think the reality is cruel, people always at difference time make difference choices.when you look back, perhaps you think you should adhere to your dream.

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (606)   ranked 136 out of 19,055 in questions & answers  1 month ago

firemom31 - Oh gosh, it must have been difficult for you with the marriage issues. It is good that you are still in the medical field though . . is there anyway you can go back to finish up and become a doctor still? Perhaps one day you can still achieve your dream!

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (606)   ranked 136 out of 19,055 in questions & answers  1 month ago

joeyzeng1969 - I grew up with family members knocking down what I wanted to be, so I know what you mean. I think that's part of the reason why I kept switching all the time (though children will do that). I think things would have been a little different if my interests were nurtured at a younger age more than knocked down, certainly I think I would have had more confidence. I think people should adhere to their dreams - but it's difficult to do that as a child when there are others who tell you they think they know better.

No as i always wanted to be a vet or a vet nurse,as i was always looking after birds as well as other wild animals that were hurt when i was alot younger.Instead i ended up working in a chicken factory and then i went on to work with the elderly. Now i am a stay at home mum with 6 children and married.Funny how things turn out.

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (606)   ranked 136 out of 19,055 in questions & answers  1 month ago

I have so many friends who wanted to be vets . . . there's only one that I know of who actually made it! You must have such a caring nature to look after all those animals! Chicken factory - interesting - and working with the elderly which is a big switch! I'm a stay at home mom now too, for a few more years anyway.

Congratulations!!! you really did what you wanted to be... For my case I really wanted to be an archetecht since I was small for I love math and I love designs, but my parents discourages me for as my father said only boys are being given opportunity on many companies to be an archetect. So I put that behind, I enrolled on a Computer Science Programming Course the time I reach college but I get bored after 2 years and a half since my interest is not their...
I shifted to another course which is Mathematics education, then I find it really interesting, I discovered more things in math that I really wanted to learn and the thing that cought my attention to enroll with that course in the NonEucledian Geometry which would use your eye perseptions that two parallel lines meet at a ceratin point...Their during my four years in that course I find every minute of it worthy. And now I am already a full pledge math teacher... I did not get what I really wanted to have when I was small but I guess I get what the Lord wanted me to have.

Oh, that double standard . . . must be an old fashioned father like mine? My father always thought women should be "domestic", so a college degree of any kind would be fine (funny he complained that I would go get an art degree, eh?). My female friend wanted to be an architect too - and she said there were mostly men in her classes too. But she ended up in computer science as well. Well, I think it's good that you became a math teacher . . . at least you had an interest in the subject!!

I think that slowly and sometimes painfully I am becoming what I want to be. I´m 64 and I still ask myself what exactly do I want to be when I grow up. Every time the answer is nearer my latest dream. I have discovered that what I want to be is a person who can say what she wants and doesn´t have to or care to hide her real thoughts. I want to be fully unveiled when I grow up.
I have done lots of things in my life, most of which were things I really wanted to do. I had kids, planted trees, wrote books. I loved and was loved.
As you have told us, when I was young I wanted to be so many things that it would have been absolutly imposible. But in a way I did all of them. When I write stories I get into a made up world and my characters are all parts of myself.
It´s spring in my country now and this spring and summer I will also be a gardener. I cleaned up a small space and just planted beans, fava beans. I have tomato seedlings growing in a pot. Last winter I did an experiment on potatoes and planted some in bags in Winter. Today I went to dig them and I´ll eat them now skin and all with butter. happy
Take care!!!

What an interesting response! I think you are a person of "life" . . . who says we have to have just one occupation? Sounds like you've done a lot and what's neat is you're still going on strong. I think this is the perfect place to display your real thoughts . . . so I hope your goals with that are achieved soon! I love stories and books too - in fact I'm an illustrator as well - but haven't achieved that career-wise yet. Best of luck with your gardening!!

Yes i too became what i wanted to be when i was younger but at a great cost!! I was that child that everyone hated!!! When i started high school i rebelled!, I never turned up for school and even when i did i was causing trouble, i prefered to be out late at night smoking, drinking and doing drugs!, It was then i met my current partner of 9 years, I left school without any qualifications, After 2 years with my partner I fell pregnant at 17 and relised that i had to change!,I juggled college, uni, work and a baby to become what i always want to be a qualified BSL interpreter!!! Ive now been working as a BSL interpreter for 4 years and have earning much more qualifications along the way! It was hard work but it has given my son the life he deserves and myself an acheivement i didnt think id actually acheive!!

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (606)   ranked 136 out of 19,055 in questions & answers  1 month ago

Good for you for overcoming things to achieve your goals! Yes, it sounds like you learned a huge life lesson in your youth - but in the end it actually motivated you to move forward and make a life for yourself and your son. Honestly I had to look up what BSL was . . . how interesting - I learned something today. Take care - I applaude you!

congratulations!you become what you wanted to be when you grew up by your efforts.

I agree your dad said that only people who are slightly insane become artists.
maybe it's not perfectly right. But only you immerge into art,you can achieve. at that time you will be unique, just like insane.

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (606)   ranked 136 out of 19,055 in questions & answers  1 month ago

Ha ha! Well, the creative field is so vast . . . being an artist doesn't always mean becoming a painter or sculptor like the old masters. These days there are designers, animators, illustratiors . . . lots of commercial artists which is different from fine artists (which many think of when we speak of artists). I think people mistake insanity for having the mindset of seeing things with a different eye.

I wanted to be a veterinarian technician as a kid. Currently I work a level below that in the kennels, so I can say that I am 'on my way' to achieving my childhood goal. I just have to work hard and prove myself as someone that they want to move up in the ranks and train as a technician.

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (606)   ranked 136 out of 19,055 in questions & answers  1 month ago

Oh yes, sounds like you are on your way to achieving that goal! Sometimes we have to be at the bottom of the totem pole and work our way up - but sounds like you are nearly there! Good luck - that's great you WILL become a vet technician!!

congratulations, you finally made it! i kinda envy you!
I can barely remember what i wanted to be and i guess i am kind of design of somebody else.i never lived the way i want(shame on me). life is a struggle.
but,as a high school guy, i still have time to think about what i want to be in the future, and im sure i'll figure it out soon.from now on,my life depends on me!

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (606)   ranked 136 out of 19,055 in questions & answers  1 month ago

If you are in high school, you certainly have time! But I will say the sooner you can figure out what you want to do, the faster you'll be on the road to get there. I know many people who went through college who still had no clue what they wanted to do upon graduation . . . so they became professional students for a very long time! Life can be a struggle, but if you choose to become something you have a serious interest in, it will be that much easier for you. Go with your passions. Good luck!
