2. magic9 (557) | 3 months ago | I'm from China too. But I guess this question won't draw much attention from foreigners as you expect because the question is too general. Too general that people don't know where to start! Or someone would not tell the truth if they want to respond to your topic in fear of any offence.

owlwings (5287) | 3 months ago | If I have any fear of 'offence' it is that responses here might offend the powers that be in China, not the person starting the discussion! In the West, we are very aware that China censors websites: I do hope that MyLot will be 'under the radar', so to speak.

owlwings (5287) | 3 months ago | I would love to see the Great Wall and the great army of figures that was uncovered some time ago. We actually had a chance to see some of them a few years ago when they were brought to England but I didn't get to the exhibition.
There are many fascinating and old places to see in China but what I would most like to know is how ordinary people live their lives and what they think of the West. I gather that the tourist guides do not encourage one to visit certain streets in Beijing ... in fact one is carefully guided away from certain areas in case you should see life as it really is!

4. owlwings (5287) | 3 months ago | I have to say that my impressions of China have changed over the years.
The first 'encounter' I had with China was through the children's books about 'Lo Cheng - The Boy who Wouldn't Keep Still'. These were written and delightfully illustrated by Chiang Yee ('The Silent Traveller'), an artist and writer who made Britain and America his home but finally returned to China where he died in 1977.
These books were, I imagine, somewhat autobiographical and told of the life and culture in China in the early part of the 20th Century when 'Western' ideas had barely touched the country. My impression then was of a people with a sensitive and artistic nature and a strict culture which, though very different from ours, had a great many similarities in family life. Through these books I learned to appreciate Chinese writing (Chiang Yee was an accomplished calligrapher) but I suppose that I learned very little, really, about the country and the people.
Later on I came to read some of Chiang Yee's other books (the 'Silent Traveller' series) which are a delightful insight on how foreigners see our culture in Britain but really tell one little about China, except obliquely.
When cheap Chinese goods began to be imported into Britain in the '50s and '60s (I believe that mostly they came from Taiwan rather than mainland China), the main impression one had of China was of a country which was forcing its people to work hard for little pay and to produce cheap goods of little value. In the West we were highly suspicious and disapproving of the Communist regime (though the 'Works of Chairman Mao' and the 'Little Red Book' were much read and discussed by certain left wing teenagers). I think that the massacre in Tiananmen Square put an end to many people's rosy ideas that Chinese Communism was a good thing!
Now, in the 21st Century, I think that most people see China as less of a threat and more of a real player in world affairs and economy. We are still concerned that the Chinese government wants to restrict discussion about many things and may still be violating human rights (from the West's point of view, of course). Lately, we in the West find it a matter of concern that China seeks to restrict your access to the Internet. Perhaps MyLot will be one of the sites forbidden if we talk too much about this! At the same time, there are some news items which come from China which are, to say the least bizarre ... a flock of dolphins 'protecting' a Chinese ship in the Red Sea? Come on! (And there are others of the same kind which we get to see). 'Real' news items (like the earthquake last year) seem to be delayed. China is a little bit coy about broadcasting its natural disasters to the rest of the world, it seems ... more so than Russia.
To be, for the moment, completely facetious. My daughter just read the title and said "What is my impression about china? It doesn't bounce very well when you drop it!" I should explain that 'china' (with a small 'C') means crockery, porcelain ... plates and cups ... in England! My daughter, of course, fully understood the question but chose to 'misread' it!

6. maximax8 (10731) | 3 months ago | Welcome to wonderful My Lot. I like China from what I have heard about China. It is meant to be a really beautiful country and the people are said to be very friendly. I know that the language looks really difficult indeed so that would be the only problem for me if I was going to try to learn it. I know that China has an excellent system of trains and many lines. The nearest that I have been is Hong Kong. I liked that a lot.
