The side effects of coming off anti-depressants |
|
I have been on anti-depressant medication for a little over 3 months and I am wanting to stop taking it now. I have heard that you should not stop but that you should ween yourself off of it. Can you share any side effects that you have had while coming off your medication and how long it took you to come off of it?

I was not 100% better, but that is the only side effect I experienced when I quit taking it

| rachaelspires (39) | 3 months ago | That's the thing I don't think I should have ever been on them. I was not depressed if anything I was suffering from anxiety. I don't wish to go back to my doctor as they are only too happy in handing out more and more medication for this and that. I was thinking of going cold turkey but maybe I should slowly take myself off them. Can I ask what you experienced when you went cold turkey?

Ravenladyj (18001) | 3 months ago | Oh if its just for anxiety then I would go off them SLOWLY...BUT I would also make sure you have another method for dealing with your anxiety should you continue to have bouts of it..
With me whenever I have taken myself off my pills cold turkey my depression comes back fast, hard and worse each time..Keep in mind though I suffer from severe long term depression, have suicidal tendancies along with other disorders from Chronic PTSD to high anxiety to Chronic insomnia and so on...LOL basically my head is a mess without my pills...I noticed to that each time I did it (stopped taking them) the time frame shortened as far as how quickly my depression etc came back.. and like I said it always came back stronger and harder than the time before....

| rachaelspires (39) | 3 months ago | Thanks for sharing your personal experience and thankfully (no offence) my problems do not extend to your conditions. I wonder how you make it through each day. It's great to see that you are light-hearted with your conditions and continue to power on through it. All the best.

4. weasel81 (1244) | 3 months ago | my partner was on antidepressants for quite a long time, only decided to get off them this yr. go to the doctor and get weened off them, as said in other posts. things could go wrong and you end with a situation. i know when my partner took his late he'd end up with a motion sickness feeling. the doctor just dropped the dosage, in half and you took the tablets like normal, for son long then did the same thing with another lot. it took about a month to do. but's it all done now, but i'd have to say he's better behaved now than he was when he was on the medication. i believed he was on the wrong one, he followed what his brother used. best of luck, and you know where to find us if you want to talk.

| rachaelspires (39) | 3 months ago | I feel so spaced out while I am on them and I feel ready to do this on my own. I have suffered from anxiety as a child and I knew something had to be done when I could not step into a bus for the fear of something bad happening. I have halved my dosage now and tonight I feel like a 'fairy' or some other mythical creature. My daughter said to me "mum we can do this together" she is only 8 but she takes such good care of me the poor thing I felt so guilty this afternoon I gave her $100 to go and buy something for herself she got clothes and a toy but she was thankful and I am blessed to have her here. It's tough going through this alone but I know once I am off it life will be back to normal. Thanks Weasel81

5. tarachand (2294) | 3 months ago | I suggest you consult your doctor before you start weaning yourself off medication. My mom tried it a few years ago on her own and the reaction (not only the physical reaction, but the mental reaction) was adverse.
Later on higher dosages of anti-depressants and additional medicines were recommended and administered, and she was finally weaned off the drugs under medical supervision. She passed on this January of a heart ailment after spending about six years of a normal happy life without any anti-depressants.

6. bucketkid (193) | 3 months ago | is a chemical change in your body so it will probably be similar to what it was likely when you were put on the medication.
weight/appetite changes tiredness/lethargy headaches drymouth
these are all common side effects
what yu should really do is talk to the doctor who prescribed your meds cause it really depends on the type you were on, they are all a little bit different. yur doctor is the one to ask, they're the specialist.

7. 4ofmyown (676) | 2 months ago | I have to agree with most of the other posts and do not stop taking your medicine cold turkey. Also, it would be a good idea to discuss it with your prescribing Dr. so they can tell you how to ween of the medication. Some people experience headaches and trouble sleeping...etc but I think the worst thing is that your symptoms that caused you to go on the medication in the first place can come back but even stronger. Some people even become suicidal just because of stopping their medication improperly...even though they weren't suicidal to begin with. Just be careful about stopping any medication without talking to your DR. first.

8. Porcospino (2727) | 2 months ago | I started taking antidepressants 5 years ago, and when I had been on them for half a year I wanted to quit. I talked to my doctor about it and he agreed. I asked him how I should quit, because I had heard that it was best to do it slowly, but he told me that I just had to quit and that it wasn't neccesary to do it slowly. I thought that sounded a bit strange, but I did what he told me and that was a big mistake, because my depression returned and it was much worse than before! Today I wouldn't quit like that, if the doctor told me so, but at that time I was very inexperienced and I didn't think that my depression would get so bad. I would never take a cold turkey again that is for sure.

| rachaelspires (39) | 2 months ago | Thanks for all the tips, I consulted my doctor and I am getting off of it slowly although some days I feel awful. The main part I can handle is the dizziness but I guess that goes away in time but other then that my state of mind is in a great place so that's the best thing I could wish for.
