Have You Ever Taken Up Self Defence |
|
I have been doing a lot of work on myself of late, what with going to courses etc to relate to people, get a better understanding of myself as well as others, to help my self esteem and confidence and to deal with depression and my anxiety issues.
Well I decided to go along to a Self Defence Class, it teaches 'Choi Kwang Do' a martial art aimed at protecting yourself from confrontations, verbal or physical abuse.
The literature I picked up said it's focus is to getting you in shape, relieving stress in a safe and peaceful environment and teach effective self defence techniques.
It's on Mondays and Thursdays 7.30 to 9pm. Well I was a bit apprehensive but when I got into it I really enjoyed it, especially when I got to start punching! Don't worry the partner I was paired up with had protection. I envisualized that pad he was holding to be people who have hurt me in the past. It was wonderfully therapeutic and also a great way of getting rid of my anger and aggression!
I was embarrassed of my coordination or lack of coordination and remembering the moods, but I was told I had good vocal communication when exercising my moves!
I was made very welcome and it was more of a mixed group! I guess I kept worrying that I was doing things wrong and being extremely self conscious but my worries were addressed.
Maybe I have found the ideal way of boosting up my self-esteem and confidence?
So have you ever been to self defence classes? Have you found them useful? and how long did you go for?
Do you fancy self defence courses?
What is your view on self defence?
We also taught how to disarm someone who is threatening us with a knife, very useful in the precarious society we find ourselves in.

wolfie34 (13930) | 3 months ago | Once on a train I was threatened with a knife by two youths, but I shouted at them I haven't got any money when they demanded my wallet and I walked off, I guess I was very lucky, slightly stupid as they could have quite of easily used the knife. Maybe it was because I shouted that put them off? I have guardian angels that look after me I think.

2. JenInTN (3786) | 3 months ago | I think that it's great! My grandfather was a martial arts instructor in the army and he raised me. He also taught me some techniques to defend myself. I would actually love to further the few things I do knowin a class. I think it helps with self awareness and discipline. The self esteem and confidence is a plus too. Good luck with your class and remember..your there to learn so of course it will be awkward at first. You'll get better as you learn more. Take care.

4. dawnald (10299) | 3 months ago | Do they have self defense classes for middle aged ladies with back problems? The idea interests me somewhat, but I'd really consider pursuing it for my kids.

wolfie34 (13930) | 3 months ago | They do have have middle aged ladies there and certainly a lady who's in her sixties goes! Not sure about people with back problems though.

dawnald (10299) | 3 months ago | It's probably like anything else, if you tell the instructor about a problem like that, they'll work around it.

wolfie34 (13930) | 3 months ago | I have made my instructor aware that I suffer with depression and anxiety issues the fact that I felt brave enough to be open and honest I think is good for me, as I am usually mistrustful of strangers.

5. pixeltwistr (373) | 3 months ago | I have always wanted to take some form of martial arts classes but havent had the money so far. Martial arts is about SO much more than just self defense....its about self control and self esteem and inner peace!

wolfie34 (13930) | 3 months ago | That is one of the main factors that influenced me in going, the self esteem. Personally for me I feel the lessons are quite reasonably priced. But it depends on your budget etc I guess.

wolfie34 (13930) | 3 months ago | I think I spend far too much time in front of the computer and gogglebox so I need to get out, this week is really jampacked especially tomorrow, psychology in the morning, then the gym then self defence in the evening. Mind you I do tend to be far more active in the Winter than the Summer. This could be the making of me.

thea09 (4870) | 3 months ago | Good for you Wolfie, i presume that the bit of socialising as well is working wonders for your confidence and that you feel a bit more positive. I just had a few hours out and it was just what I needed. I'll be happy to see you less on here if it means you are actually starting to feel better about things. Never forget, stomach in, chest out, and hold that head up high. xxxx

8. mesuaky (261) | 3 months ago | i haven't had any self defence taken but i really love to. i have been wanting to take a course but it seems to keep on contradicting with my work and time. for a women like me i find it best to learn self defense specially now that crimes are becoming higher and criminals now are getting bolder. because i know that no one else can protect me 24-7 round the clock. so i need to be independent and learn how to take care and protect myself. its a good advantage specially for women.

9. msfrancisco9369 (2136) | 3 months ago | Hi Wolfie,
I am happy to hear people like you spending time for self-care. Undergoing all these activities to keep their sanity, stay fit and free from any harm and danger. Round of applause for you friend...!
I had an exposure to self-defense during my high school days. It was integrated in our Physical Education subject. My PE teacher taught us basic judo techniques. It's very physical but will really equip you with the right attitude and alertness to protect yourself from any harm. If use in its proper context -- self-defense is really useful!

wolfie34 (13930) | 3 months ago | Thank you my friend, I think it's come at exactly the right time, I hope it's going to be the making of me, I suffer terribly with self-esteem issues, anxiety and depression and this could actually turn things around into my favour. I am going to give it my best shot. And it's getting me out twice a week too, instead of spending every night in front of the computer!

wolfie34 (13930) | 3 months ago | It will compliment the work I am doing at the gym which means I will be working harder on my body which should yield results, both mentally and physically. I just got back from a second meet and I love it, it's challenging, sweaty and hard work but it'll be worth it, I need to build my confidence and self esteem up and also deal with my anger and aggression and it's wonderful being able to release the anger and aggression by punching in a controlled environment.

msfrancisco9369 (2136) | 3 months ago | Great job. It's really a good displacement strategy to relaease all your angst in life. You will be alright --meaning physically and mentally fit to face anotehr chapter in your life. Goodluck!

wolfie34 (13930) | 3 months ago | Just got back from my second meeting, it's wonderful I have an aura about me when I have been. I am going to sign up from Monday it's £40 a month for twice a week, which is about £5 each session not bad for a night out is it? It gets me out, it gets me meeting people, it builds my confidence and I love punching, it's so therapeutic and gets rid of my anger and aggression, not good at kicking but the technique will come. Takes 3 years to be a black belt, but right now I am more interested in building my confidence, self esteem and getting me out! I still go to the gym as well my friend, courses and therapy so my week is eaten up. I spend less time on the computer now which is a good thing. Nice to be missed dear friend x
