"Boy" friend/"Girl"friend dilemma |
|
Once you become an adult, is this particualar word still in effect? "Boyfriend", splitting the two words up, doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I can't call my self a "boy" anymore, I am more of a man. Friend is someone that is defined as a person one knows well, and is fond of (Webster's Dictionary). In a situation like that, wouldn't "significant other" be more appropriate? Or would the sexes disagree in a more "politically correct" society? What are your thoughts?

5. dawnald (10168) | 3 months ago | Doesn't really matter to me. If I were with somebody who objected to the term boyfriend, I'd find out was acceptable to him. But you can call me a girl any old time. Go ahead, feed my ego.:-)

6. sid556 (10825) | 3 months ago | Great question. Once I went thru my divorce it really seemed weird to call anyone I dated my "boyfriend". Likewise it felt so highschoolish to be referred to as a "girlfriend". Significant other is really more fitting but still too formal for someone like me. Whenever I am dating a man, I really find myself not defining our relationship with any title at all when introducing him to someone. People will figure it all out in due time if it goes anywhere and lasts. My family and my close friends already will know because I would have already told them that I'm seeing someone and who it is.

7. boybato (522) | 3 months ago | That makes sense but I think "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" have become the conventional calling of 2 people who are in a relationship irregardless of age. It's not really a formal way of calling one's partner but it's more of the people got used to it already. I couldn't agree even more, another term such as "significant other" is more appropriate and formal than "boy or girlfriend". Saying "boyfriend" and "boy friend" are two different things and sometimes can be misleading. A "boyfriend" means that it's ones partner in a relationship while a "boy friend" could mean a typical male friend or a close friend who happened to be a boy or male. I also agree about your point of saying that "boyfriend/girlfriend" ain't that appropriate formally for people of certain age. It's good enough for young people, probably people in their teenage years, but not for adults. It won't be good to hear a "man/womanfriend" to replace the typical "boy/girlfriend", that would be utterly funny. (kidding). Anyway, if we feel uncomfortable saying my "boy/girlfriend", we can use other terms to refer to our partner such as my "significant other", "partner", or some other cheesy terms such as my "love" or "honey". We all could be creative in how we could call our partners. Cheers

8. littleowl (5065) | 3 months ago | Hi Gemini',
You are right as adults it does seem silly using 'boyfriend/girlfriend', I woudl say my other half meaning my partner which is another word I would use, or their is manfriend if you want to be really fussy about what you use, but whatever is the better it confuses me guess it really is how close you are as to how/what you would class yourself to wether it be either a man or woman...LoLo

Anyhow, it doesn't matter, if you enjoy "significant other",just let it work. Sometimes I call mysef girl although I am not in adolescence any more, I like this state of being young and cute. LOL

10. mielshare (126) | 3 months ago | I don't see anything wrong when you call your partner boyfriend/girl friend. It has been the traditional way of calling our significant other. I think it wouldn't matter how we call them the important is we love them..
Happy mylot!!
