What Does "Going Rogue" REALLY Mean to Alaskans? |
|
A good person to ask may be Betty Monegan, the mother of Walt Monegan, the former Commissioner of Public Safety Palin had pressured to fire her ex-brother in law. She carried a sign at the September, 2008 rally Alaskans for Truth held in downtown Anchorage which read, "I'm the mother of the rogue, Walt Monegan, and I LOVE HIM!" Read more here:
But those of us who live in Alaska, and who have been following this story from the beginning know the real root of that phrase, and will understand the ugly irony of Palin’s title.
During the ethics investigation of Sarah Palin now known as “Troopergate,” that phrase became seared into the collective consciousness of Alaskans. Palin’s spokeswoman Meghan Stapleton used that word referring not to Palin, but to the former Commissioner of Public Safety Walt Monegan. Palin had pressured Monegan to fire her ex-brother in law Trooper Mike Wooten whose nasty divorce from Palin’s sister had left bitter feelings. Monegan refused to fire him, and was subsequently dismissed by the governor, leaving the Department of Public Safety without leadership, and leaving many Alaskans with a bad taste in their mouths.
In a stinging press conference, Stapleton said that Monegan, a particularly well-liked and respected public servant, former police chief and ex-Marine had displayed “egregious rogue behavior.” Stapleton, who had been a respected news anchor before her association with Palin, suffered withering criticism from Alaskans on both sides of the political spectrum. Alaska is a small town. Monegan was no “rogue,” everyone knew it, and the use of the term disgraced her.
What had Monegan done, according to the governor, that earned him this brand? He had planned a trip to Washington D.C. to seek funding to help combat sexual assault in a state that leads the nation in that category. Rogue, indeed.
In September of 2008, Alaskans for Truth held a rally in downtown Anchorage. More than 1500 Alaskans showed up to protest the administration’s handling of “Troopergate,” the insinuation of the McCain campaign’s attorneys into Alaska’s Department of Law, and the outrageous behavior of Meg Stapleton, then Attorney General Talis Colberg, and Palin herself. One of the speakers at the rally was Betty Monegan, the mother of Walt Monegan, who carried a sign referencing the outrageous accusations made by the Palin administration. (End of excerpt)

I know "Going Rogue" as it's used in the title to Sarah Palin's book is meant to be a form of praise. Sarah has been proud to call herself a "maverick" and she also seemed to enjoy the fact that some members of John McCain's campaign had accused her of "going rogue". I wonder if she was thinking of the original use of the word when she chose it?

You would lynch her if you could.

Ted, I don't mind telling you one bit that this entire post of yours offends me deeply! I certainly won't deny that I've been critical of Sarah Palin. I can tell you what I feel for her is not hate, that's a very strong word and a strong emotion which I don't toss around lightly, but if you and others wish to interpret my words as a sign that I "hate" her there's nothing I can do to change your mind. However, I'm confused as to what's "bigoted" about it. As for her family, I've never said or done ANYTHING to give the impression that I have anything against anyone in her family. THAT is simply a lie. Your comparison of my actions and a KKK member's treatment of black people is totally outrageous and a slap in the face of any black person who has ever been the victim of that kind of hate and bigotry.

matersfish (805) | 1 month ago | As long as it'll make people happy.
After all, Palin's Queen of the entire globe. We live by her laws. I think she invented kangaroos. We know Levi isn't the father of her daughter's baby -- it's God. Palin's face is on every monetary note. She's actually the President, and this Obama guy is just her press secretary.
It's not like Palin is just some former VP candidate and a retired governor.

anniepa (9190) | 1 month ago | I have no problem with her being alive. I just wish she'd stay out of the public eye but since she's not going to do that I'm probably going to start a discussion about her when she makes news and if nobody responds I'll stop. Anyone who doesn't like my discussions is welcome to simply ignore them but if you respond that's fine too, I'll take the points and pennies...lol!

matersfish (805) | 1 month ago | I respond to a lot of dicussions. I especially respond to Palin discussions. I find it fascinating how wide the political divide is on its basest of levels, and nothing brings that out of people on either side quite like Palin.
She's no longer a woman. She's a name. She's a symbol. She's the battle-cry for some and the butt of a joke for others. She's not doing anything in the way of being in the "public eye" that 10,000,000 other schmos haven't done, only with her, it's taken as a slight to her enemies and as a blessing to her most hardcore supporters.
Personally, I admire Palin on some levels. In my eyes, she's not out there trying to be whatever some folks may want. Far too often in America these a$$hat politicians constantly bend and twist and reinvent their false-in-the-first-place images for the sake of gaining and sustaining power. (Take our current President for the most alarming--though FAR from the only--example.)
Sure, people can nitpick instances -- they have and do and use fictional accounts, make mountains of mole hills, and use any inconsistency as proof of her being... whatever they want her to be that day (I'm speaking of good and bad). But overall, she's different and grounded and NOT an elitist, and I respect that.
I catch my "news" from my locals, Fox, Politico and a few other odds and ends, and when I want to see what the government-run news is up to, I'll switch over to CNN or MSNBC (although CNN isn't nearly as bad). On the former, I'm hard-pressed to find ANY Palin news. On the latter, they always manage to squeeze something about Palin in there: a line from a speech she made; another Levi "bombshell"; her book's presales and how much they hate stupid people; or even another look at why we should all be thankful Obama won.
I highly doubt she'd be in the public eye nearly as often if so many weren't looking to outright destroy the woman.
I mean, hell, they do a great job of ignoring real news. Why can't they ignore Palin?

The original use of the word rogue? It's been around longer than I have and I have heard it used many times. Stapleton used a word and then later, Palin used the same word.... shocking.
I am afraid to write any more, I may use a word someone else once used in a different situation.

anniepa (9190) | 1 month ago | "What do you think? Haven't both sides gotten ridiculous and extreme about these two people?" ABSOLUTELY, I can't argue with you there! However, unless I'm reading and watching the wrong things and hanging out with the wrong people, those who hate Obama and love Palin are a lot more ridiculous and extreme than those who support Obama and dislike or disagree with Palin.
I KNOW you and others here will disagree with my last statement but that's what makes for great discussions, right? It wouldn't be any fun here AT ALL if we all agreed!

9. kennyrose (4040) | 1 month ago | Annie, There are numbers of things called ROGUE even a band named ROGUE wave, here is the run down in part of the Rogue wave found in Wikipedia below hope this helps you out understanding Sarah Palin's first book entitled Going Rogue~~~ ROSE
(WIKIPEDIA REFERS ROGUE WAVE) (extreme waves) are relatively large and spontaneous ocean surface waves that are a threat even to large ships and ocean liners.[1] In oceanography, they are more precisely defined as waves whose height is more than twice the significant wave height (SWH), which is itself defined as the mean of the largest third of waves in a wave record. Therefore rogue waves are not necessarily the biggest waves found at sea; they are, rather, surprisingly large waves for a given sea state. "Rogue waves are not tsunamis, which are set in motion by earthquakes [and] travel at high speed, building up as they approach the shore. Rogue waves seem to occur in deep water or where a number of physical factors such as strong winds and fast currents converge. This may have a focusing effect, which can cause a number of waves to join together.

kennyrose (4040) | 1 month ago | annie, i did read your discussion it was mixed with bogus democrat law suites sarah palin has been found not guilty in every one of them and her ex brother in law a cop who use his teaser gun on her sister little boy,the man that refused to fire the x brother in law and the title of her book. the word rogue means different things and it depend what a person want to apply it to,you and your friends that bitterly hate and trash sarah palin here at my lot has apply it to a rotten no good person, but the bottom line sarah palin was paid 7 millions up front for her first book, she is so popular pre orders went out the roof over night and it is predicted "going rogue" will be a top best seller, matter afact the conservative author like glen beck, bill o' are the top best seller so that reads the american people are not buying books wrote by liberals as much a consertive writers. far as sarah palin's first book it is before it hits the book shelfs a best seller, and i'm very happy to see a women like sarah reach for the stars and hold one in hand, sarah palin is a star to many millions of americans all across the united states and she will do well no matter what she she dose. oprah knows that and that is why she has invited sarha palin to her show it will be good for her sagging viewer rating,i'm sure you will be tuned in to oprah on nov 16 th the eve of sarah new book, enjoy~~~ rose

anniepa (9190) | 1 month ago | Holy crap, Rose, I just realized you wrote a sentence that was TEN lines long...lol!! Let's see how many sentences I need to address your one long one... First of all, my discussion isn't really about any lawsuit - which, by the way, weren't all DemocratIC suits, some were filed by Sarah's fellow Republicans. It WAS in part about Walt Monegan, the man who was fired, and about how there were people in Alaska who liked him very much and who didn't like it when he was called a "rogue" for planning a trip to ask for more funds to fight sexual assault. It's not surprise there have been a lot of preorders for her book. You're right, books by conservatives tend to do well but it just MIGHT have something to do with conservative organizations buying them up in bulk and then giving them away as incentives to join different groups or donate to certain causes or campaigns. Just sayin'...
As I've said in the past, you and I have different definitions of the word "star"; whatever you choose to call her I'd say it's a bit of an exaggeration to imply "many millions of Americans" adore or admire her. You must know me better than I know myself because I'm not at all sure if I'll tune in to watch Oprah's show or not. As I've said, if I do it will be the first time in probably years since I don't watch those kinds of shows. Maybe I'll watch a minute or two which is usually all I can take of hearing Sarah talk.

10. StarBright (1152) | 1 month ago | If you take the words literally....the definition of the word "Rogue" - somebody dishonest: an unscrupulous or dishonest person, especially somebody who is also likable - somebody mischievous: a mischievously playful person, especially a naughty child - dangerous solitary animal: a vicious or uncontrolled animal that lives apart from the rest of its herd or group.
They all fit, but none are complimentary. Sounds right to me.

The Urban Dictionary at http://www.urbandictionar... has another spin on the phrase "Going Rogue." I have to warn you it is XXX rated. Their definition is not for the faint at heart or for anyone easily offended. However, as we try to understand the title of Ms. Palin's book, it might be worthwhile to take a look just to get another viewpoint.
