Frustrations with too easily assigned "mature content" here |
|
I think that as we post anything in any category here, if it is automatically going to label your post as mature content, then it should show you in red the exact words or phrases that triggered that restriction. At least this way you have the option of changing the word or phrase prior to posting. The way it is now you have no idea what the triggers are. So it doesn't even allow you to be respectful of restrictions. Some people don't want to set their preferences to allow mature content so because of this, they miss out on perfectly innocent and clean posts.
I am having this anomaly with about 80% of my posts in the interest group "Survivor" (as one example) lately. And I've noticed this before too. I used the word anomaly, because that is what it seems to be. Upon reviewing my posts, it is beyond me what word is there that could possibly be considered mature content.
With some posts it does tell you in red words that are not allowed. Sometimes they are very innocent words. Like if a persons name is D i c k, it won't let you post it.
So why does it restrict some words as unpostable, yet others post but automatically assign itself as mature content?
How does it make you feel if 80% of what you write gets labeled as a restrictive category, when nothing you wrote deserved to be labeled as such? It has made me feel stifled, and because of this I will be posting even less than I do now. I say that goes against myLot's basic intention here. It is completely opposite of what they want you to do.
Why do you think they have such heavy restrictions on what you post when so often there is no seemingly good reason for it? It seems convoluted to their intention here. What do you think? Help me understand, myLot. Share your reasoning with us please.

2. thinkingoutloud (2457) | 3 months ago | I understand your frustration, plunketear. It arises because you have very good intentions in what you are posting and you're coming up against a word filter that won't allow you to use what you wish to use, with total sincerity or integrity. However, please consider how many other people may use those same words with malice - for instance, in using them to attack another member (e.g., Soandso, you are SUCH a d*ck!! - to repeat your example word). Word filters cannot determine context. They don't recognize that you mean nothing wrong when you use the words that trigger them. Sites like myLot get an incredibly high volume of posts every day and I'm sure that no human moderator(s) can read all of them... and, even if they can, there is a certain time delay required to accomplish that task. Word filters help to cut down on the instances of mis-use (or guideline violations) by not allowing certain things to "go live" in a post or by holding them to a certain segment of the reading population. It just part of community management that works great in some cases and in others, like yours, it's a bit less fabulous

plunketear (1241) | 3 months ago | Yes, but don't you think they should have a list of words or phrases that you could refer to ahead of time even? Ones that will trigger the m a t u r e content classification. The way it is now you have no idea what the triggers are unless it goes into the 'disallowed' words in red. At least with those you know what word is the trigger.

3. dawnald (10067) | 3 months ago | You can't talk about the Owl and the P*ssycat either...
Yep, a word list would be great. Or a warning message that allows you to change your wording. Of course, you might get zapped with the tag anyway as soon as a responder uses a word on the list.
And on the subject of making suggestions to myLot, I wonder if anybody here can recall making a suggestion that actually was implemented!

plunketear (1241) | 3 months ago | That's true on the getting zapped anyway, but it would only be on their post, not yours, right? It just looks bad if all the way down a thread, about 80% of your replies are all MC rated, ya know?
That's also true about good ideas never (or rarely) getting implemented. I had a GREAT idea I thought that would encourage the rating system to be used more effectively, by adding a 4th icon at the right below the -/+ icons, that would say "READ". That way people could click on it instead of a - or + as a means to show what they had read or not. But...

4. kitty42 (1165) | 3 months ago | Hello my friend
You know there was a time I would respond to a discussion and I would get that waring I would read my post and think what did I say, there was nothing there,, why did I get the waring, its hard to know what they were referring too when there was nothing there, this has not happened to me in a while, I was starting to get to the point that I would not respond at all, this was happening to me daily, but its been a while since I saw that waring so I don't have a clue why this happens my friend, just hope it don't happen to me again lol
With my luck since we are talking about it, watch I get the warning, never fails, when I respond to someone that have issue trying to send post then I have the same issues lol
I will let you know if this happens to me, I hope not.
Thanks my friend.Smoochesss

5. purplealabaster (856) | 3 months ago | I got those annoying messages until I changed my preferences, and then I went back and read what the person actually typed and didn't know what the mature content that they were referring to was, either. There wasn't anything in the response that was even questionable, let alone "mature content". It was on a completely harmless subject, too.
I have had several of my discussions labeled as "mature content". I know why some of them were, but there are some that left me scratching my head as to why anyone would tag it as "mature content". It didn't really bother me as much as left me wondering what the definition might be to warrant that tag.

6. leenie50 (1824) | 3 months ago | Plunk, I don't usually notice when they put it in mature content. Some times I have noticed but just wonder, like you what I said. It's strange what some people find mature. I was caught once using that name you mentioned and I had to take it out. It almost makes me cringe thinking I said something inappropriate. It must be a personal thing. How'd you like Survivor last night? I'm waiting for someone to post on it. Hugsss Leenie
