Turned down a job because of my belief..... email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1975)   ranked 667 out of 38,533 in life3 months ago

So I've been looking at a job to supplement our income til some bills go away in a few years...namely our vehicle payments.
I really don't want to work full time. I've done years and years and years of it and I would like to be home but duty calls.
So when a friend asked me to apply as a cook at the local nursing home it seemed a perfect fit for me.
I was warmly accepted as I'm known around here as a good cook with a former career as a caterer.
But in the telephone interview I realized that I cannot take this job.....why you ask?
Well as most that know me here; I'm an herbalist. By that I mean that I do not use any over the counter or prescription drugs for myself or my family. I counsel others with health imbalances and give advices on different herbs that might help them.
I also keep a clean house no chemicals or other dangerous substances to bother me or my family.

With that comes the rub......
I don't take nor does my family take the flu or any other vaccine.
This is required by the nursing home....in fact I imagine that it's required by state law.
I categorically will not take this into my body as I feel it's a poison for all humans and animals.

So I turned it down...and it's a little frustrating as I felt this would have been a great job for me.
So do you ever turn a job down for health or ethical reasons? And if so do you feel you made the right choice?

If I have strong beliefs in an area and the job contravenes my beliefs then I would look for something compatible with my beliefs and it would be the right choice. A clear conscience is very important to me. I have no doubt that God would help me find suitable employment.

I wish you success!

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1975)   ranked 667 out of 38,533 in life  3 months ago

That's kinda how I feel. I cannot in good conscience do something that I don't advise for others. And I don't want to take the vaccines. They aren't good for me!

This is an ethical issue and a personal issue, and if you felt that taking a flu shot for a job was violating your civil rights, you were right not to take the job. It may hurt financially, but if you've lived your life a certain way, as you've explained, then the nursing home is violating your civil liberties by asking you to take a flu shot for a job. Some people would ridicule you for being stubborn and not taking the shot and then taking the job, but I am not one of those people. I think it is wrong for the government to force the issue of taking flu shots or getting vaccinated against certain diseases that have been eradicated or nearly eradicated just for a pay check. Good for you!

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1975)   ranked 667 out of 38,533 in life  3 months ago

Thanks artist....I feel that way also. I do understand they are just looking out for the best interests of the residents but I know that the shot does not necessarily protect either them or me...and if I use the spray then I actually can infect someone because this has a live virus in it!
I guess we'll just see what happens...

You made the correct choice. The body is supposed to be the temple for the soul and if you feel that vaccination is just another way of poisoning your body, then you don’t go for it, no matter what.
Personally, I too am against vaccines as I think they destroy the natural immunity of the body and are just a state sponsored gimmick to help multinational pharmaceutical companies rake in the moolah. However, polio vaccination is quite a rage and success here in India and I believe smallpox has been eradicated the world over with sustained vaccination campaigns. So I guess there some merit in it after all, though I am not a great believer in it.

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1975)   ranked 667 out of 38,533 in life  3 months ago

I do understand the concept of a vaccine but the vaccines that are out now are not tested nearly as much as they used to be. It used to take about 20+ years to get a vaccine ok'd through the FDA but now it's about 6 to 8 months.
That really bothers me!

Hi there horns,

I have never been in such a spot where I've had to make that kind of decision. If I were then I would do as you did and turn it down. You have to stand by your convictions. I think it is horrible that they are forcing people to take something that many people are not comfortable taking. When it comes to something like that then it should be a matter of personal choice. They claim these flu shots are harmless but then again they say that about all these new things until they find out later on that they were wrong. Just look at the side effects from that vaccine that is supposed to prevent cervical cancer. You made the right choice. I am sure there is a place where you can exercise your cooking talents that won't expect you to do something that goes against your beliefs.

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1975)   ranked 667 out of 38,533 in life  3 months ago

I hope so because we can really use the money. I just can't in good faith take something into me that in the past actually gave me the flu.....twice!
I will keep looking but it's a slog because we live in such a small community that jobs are scarcer than hens teeth!

hi hornswaggled No I cannot remember ever turning a job down
for health or ethical reasons. I respect your decisions regarding
medications but as I am an ex medical worker I have some very opposite views. I will get a flu shot as I have a messed up immune system due to having diabetes, and I have no fear of vacines or vaccinations whatever. I have diabetes and high blood
pressure and arthritis so take the medications my doctor wants me to take and I don't fear any of them, but I know you will respect my differences of opinion too. But I do know that a lot of herbs do wonders for us, but knowing how much and what to take are hard to find out.

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1975)   ranked 667 out of 38,533 in life  3 months ago

It can be confusing and I understand where you are at. My best friend in the world is a newly appointed and graduated nurse at this nursing home. She's the one that thought of this job for me.
I don't do traditional meds any more because they made me sick. And they made my pre diabetic condition much much worse and my asthma.
I now have normal blood sugar and have lost some weight because of it. I also have not had an asthma attack in three years. I have not used any meds for anything in three years so they do work.
I think you are right to stick with what is working for you. You must have good doctors. I never got that many here that were worth their salt.
I also think you are right to be cautious about taking just any old thing.
I would recommend that anyone who wants to check out herbs to do their homework and get a certified herbalist to help. I wouldn't want anything to happen to you or anyone else here.
I have never seen a problem with herbs unless it's mixed with regular meds. Then it can be a problem. But I recommend knowledge before putting ANYTHING into the body.

I too refuse to take the flu shot and dont allow my children to be given on either just because theres dangers with it. I know theres dangeres with getting the flu as well, because i have it right now. But on a moral issue i think you would have had the choice to refuse the nursing home from making you take it to keep your job if you was working there. The use of chemicals in the facility would have been a whole nother issue so i think you made the right choice. Its no fun to work in a place that you have to feel so uncomfortable about your surroundings. I hope for a better job offer to come you way.

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1975)   ranked 667 out of 38,533 in life  3 months ago

I hope so! I do think this kind of job would have been a good fit if they would just let the flu shot thing go.
Oh well...I guess tomorrow is another day!

If you feel that you have looked at all factors of this job in relation to other factors in your life such as family, finances, personal values, and all the things that make up your decision making factors, and still come down to thinking that turning the job down will make you feel less guilty about turning your back on your beliefs, then you made the right decision.

I personally believe that people are given the freedom to decide on how they want to improve and protect themselves for as long as they are not violating the freedom and rights of others.

There are many jobs that will agree with your personal values. Hope you find a good one:)

I hope I can find one that will actually pay. If I can't find one in this town; it's at least thirty miles to any other town.
I do like cooking and I like the elderly so it would have been a good fit for me....I guess we'll see where God leads me!

Well I turned down a webcam job, I had a friend who was a cam girl, an she was saying can make more money if I went on cam with her, an I was like no I can not do that on cam...lol

Back then I had a good paying job, now I dunno I might do it if asked again, well what I said is more about moral or ethical values.

What you are talking about is more of your own actual lifestyle than just religious beliefs.

Thats like asking a vegetarian to work as a meat cutter...lol

myLot reputation of 82/100. hornswaggled (1975)   ranked 667 out of 38,533 in life  3 months ago

Well no it's actually a moral issue because I believe that God gives me this information. If you look at the bible it's chalk full of references to herbs in everything.
And I think and believe that herbs are the answer for all health. So it is a moral issue.
It isn't something like my church tells me but my teacher follows Hebrew.. And as one that does; believes religiously that it's a sin to pollute the body.
I personally am Catholic but as a person who follows His word I do think that she is right.
The earth has everything we need to sustain ourselves in a healthy manner without interference from modern medicine.
But that's my belief; not necessarily others. I don't try to push this idea on others. I do advise others to look at herbs for there health but I do not treat or diagnose any illness.
This is against the law.

Hi hornswaggled,

I, too, am a naturalist and do not believe in contaminating my body with things such as flu shots. I totally understand where you are coming from. However, in this case, it is even more than just a medical or health issue. This is an issue of integrity, integrity to yourself and who you are. My father once told me, never betray your own principles.

While we may alter our beliefs a mite as we mature, experience and gain a fuller understanding of life, we would never want to sell short the principles which made up our foundation. No amount of financial gain could compensate for the loss of self-respect we would lose. Losing self-respect then leaves us no good for anyone. Our character and how we view that character is just as, if not more, essential to to our mental and physical well-being as is food and water.

I applaud you for having the courage to stand for what you believe even in these difficult economic times.

Thanks Paint!
I agree that I would come to hate a job that forced me to do something against my will. I personally will not do this. After all; what will they ask me to do next? I don't want to get used to the job and the income only to have to quit later....after bowing to the vaccine thing....so no....I believe like you. I will not give in on something so important.

hi hornswaggled, thats really a tough one, you sure would have been happy at that job as you like cooking so much. And in these times of economic stress I think maybe it would have been better to accept that vaccination coming with the job.
But I understand your reasons not to.
Guess what I am going to do, I will go and light a virtual candle for you hope you find suitable work soon.

hugs to you. You are really brave rather saying no to a job instead of doing something you wont want to.

hi hornswaggled,I lit that virtual candle for you just a short while ago and hope you really find a job soon to be able to make ends meet. I can imagine you and your husband fretting quite some about upcoming bills and that so close to the festive season when one should in fact forget about worries and cares and rather have a great relaxed family time
