Do you eat persimmons? |
|
I know many Asians eat persimmons. I am "American", but I grew up on these, so these are on my fruit list like any other. But I find that many people don't know what they are, or know what to do with them!
I love the fuyu variety of persimmon. The hard, crisp and sweet ones.
It's persimmon season out here - just about ripe - so time to eat up! Do you eat persimmons?

1. kylaerin (107) | 2 months ago | You know whats funny is that we have a persimmon tree in our front yard and I have never tried them. My boyfriend actually tried one the other day and loved it. I can't even imagine trying one. That tree used to get on my nerves because I would step on the persimmons that had fallen onto the ground and they would get all in the creases on my shoes. I think the smell of them too once they have fallen off of the tree and onto the ground and are rotting is something that I can not get over to even try them!

much2say (676) | 2 months ago | Wow - you had treasure in your front yard all this time! My father is a gardener and he is amazed how people just don't eat persimmons as he sees them left in the trees. That's cool your boyfriend tried it and loves them now! Well, rotting fruit is never good . . . so try a fresh one from the tree . . . before it hits the ground to get on your shoes - ha ha. But I know what you mean . . .that's how I feel about olive trees . . .though I don't know if people actually eat those types of olives.

2. kaka135 (2796) | 2 months ago | Yeah, I like to eat persimmons. I didn't know it's considered as Asian fruit. I don't know there are varieties of persimmons too, so I have no idea how fuyu is. I always see those persimmons which the skins are hard and crispy, and the inside is quite crunchy and sweet. I think some of them are imported from China, some are from local.
Have you tried the dried, flattened persimmons? Well, I do not really like it, it's kinda too sweet to me, but my mum likes it very much.

much2say (676) | 2 months ago | I don't know if it's an Asian fruit, but I notice most Asians know what they are and persimmons can be found in almost all Asian markets. Oh, yes, there are different kinds (there are ones with pointed bottoms, and you eat them when they are gushy soft . . . I don't like those). The common ones are the fuyu ones - like the one you described. I have no idea where they come from for the stores, but I know there are plenty grown locally in people's yards out here. I know the dried ones you are talking about . . . my mom loves them too, but they are too rich tasting for me - too sweet!!

much2say (676) | 2 months ago | You're lucky you have a tree . . . you can have so many in a tree that you can't even eat them all! It seems like most people who have their own trees don't buy them because they don't need to. There are some persimmon varieties that you are supposed to eat when they are soft and squishy (they are very orange and have pointed bottoms) - but I don't like that particular kind. It's possible yours are squishy because they became overripe. I wish we could have a tree (my parents do).

dracoserpintenes (254) | 2 months ago | i think mine are of the very orange pointed variety as that is what they look like^_^ its also hard to pick them off the tree because thier all up so high so i usually have to wait till they drop so they could be overripe too.

5. muscles4me (8725) | 2 months ago | I live in Missouri and I have only seen a persimmon ONCE in a grcoery store. They were expensive so they say there and shriveled up as they were still there 4 days later! LOL. I think one was $2.99 and that was at least 15 years ago because the store I saw them at had been torn down many many years ago.

much2say (676) | 2 months ago | Wow - you've only seen a persimmon once in a store out your way? The international type food stores out here seem to carry them everywhere . . . but the major grocery chains seem to have small amounts of it in their "exotic" produce section. Was it $2.99 for one fruit, or per pound?? I think I saw some here recently for 99 cents a pound!
