Turkey's SCARCE For The Holiday's???? |
Suppliers have warned the supermarkets, that there MAY be a shortage of turkey's come this Holiday season.....
Two of the TOP suppliers of turkeys for the grocer's have said, "they may have made a mistake in calculating how much consumers were prepared to spend". Therefor the 'turkey growers' have CUT DOWN as much as 30% of turkey chicks this past summer..... Did you plan on having turkey for Christmas dinner? IF no turkeys are available, WHAT shall you have instead? Rex & I this year are going to grill some nice 'porterhouse steaks' for ourselves, as we will be spending the holidays together, alone, with no family around..
So What shall you have instead of 'TURKEY'??........Lori

1. world2lot (303) | 1 month ago | Hi dumblndzzy! Its really a hard time for me if I don't find turkey in my plate on christmas dinner. I will just search for other dish like fish or meat so the I make to satisfy myself on the christmas day but still turkey can not be replaced. I really love it. Happy lotting!

dumblnddzzy (10259) | 1 month ago | HI! w2lot, good to see you here....it is sad that there will not be as many turkeys this year.. DUMB move on the growers part...Lori

mommyboo (3290) | 1 month ago | I agree that the growers are really dumb. I am getting sick and tired of seeing shortages that are caused by PEOPLE themselves. Hello, I think everybody should oversupply, that way prices would come DOWN and people would start being able to actually spend money again!! Shortages cause people to tighten up and NOT spend, because the prices soar out of the ball park!

GardenGerty (20240) | 1 month ago | Based on this discussion, I got a 17lb turkey for 86 cents per pound, the last one they had out at that price. It is canned pumpkin that is supposedly short. Wal Mart has run out of that for now. I have some on hand. Around here we eat turkey year around, so I do not know if our local growers cut back or not. We eat turkey burger as well.
| |
mommyboo (3290) | 1 month ago | Canned pumpkin? I bought a large can of that out of the mark down bin because the can was dented. It was a HUGE can and I got it for 60 cents instead of the normal almost $3. Of course I'm not sure how long it will last, I didn't use all of it so now it's in the fridge - the remainder of what I didn't use in the pumpkin pancakes.

3. Ldyjarhead (5170) | 1 month ago | Now that's just stupid. Who was in charge of marketing that came up with that bright idea?
Even if one can't afford a huge Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings, people still eat turkey. Pound for pound, turkey is the cheapest part of the meal!
I can't eat most of the rest of the things that go with my traditional Thanksgiving dinner (it's going to kill me to not eat stuffing, so I may have to cheat a bit) with this new diet I'm on, so I'm not sure what I'll do. I'll still do a big turkey, but focus on more healthy vegetables for sides rather than all the starchy ones. And no desserts for me either.:(

dumblnddzzy (10259) | 1 month ago | MMMMMMgood sounds yummy!! I know i thought it rathe a stupid marketing strategy also.. People will buy a turkey no matter what else they may buy....I don't have an oven, hence NO turkey, but rather grilling on Christmas day, with just Rex & I....Lori
| |
mommyboo (3290) | 1 month ago | You don't have an oven?? What about since the move?
BTW, I know there are many sites where you can find healthier subs for traditional holiday recipes, would that work for any dishes you can't eat? I'd rather sub a healthier, lighter recipe for something than not have it at ALL.

5. Piscesmoon (2884) | 1 month ago | I do love turkey and Christmas is the only time I buy it so I hope we don't have the same shortage in Australia. If turkey was not available, I suppose I would roast pork and perhaps a leg of lamb but only one of my sons would help me eat them as the other two will not eat red meat and my youngest refuses to eat pork because he adores pigs (as do I but I still love pork, ham and bacon). Christmas is at the height of our summer so, while I roast vegetables, I usually make a variety of salads to accompany the meat and we round the meal off with my special pavlova filled with cream, strawberries and kiwi fruit.

dumblnddzzy (10259) | 1 month ago | I did not know that christmas is in your summer.. I guess i should start reading up on Austrailia since I plan on one day living there...lori

Piscesmoon (2884) | 1 month ago | Oh, wow, Lori. I had no idea you were planning on living here one day. May I ask why? Our seasons are pretty much opposite to yours. We are in Spring at present, although it is 35 degrees Celcius today (95 F). Summer starts on 1 December so Christmas is generally really hot.

6. GardenGerty (20240) | 1 month ago | You know, I think they are trying to boost sales. We are also having a "Pumpkin Shortage" I will have Turkey for Thanksgiving and other meals all fall. It appears to be plentiful in our stores. So does pumpkin. I think they just want to jack up the prices.Steak is wonderful as well.

8. suspenseful (17072) | 1 month ago | We use chicken or ham, because we cannot use a big turkey. But I know what you mean. We just had our thanksgiving and we found that our ham with bone in was sort of short. I also note that ground turkey has been kind of short. Two weeks ago, I was planning to get some to use in my spaghetti sauce and to make either turkey burgers or turkey meat balls, but there was not any.

dumblnddzzy (10259) | 1 month ago | Yes i have noticd the ne thing they have plenty of is hamburger meat, & then it does not look very good, or fat free...lori
| |
suspenseful (17072) | 1 month ago | I notice that too. We use the extra lean, but it does get a little boring having ground round all the time. And yet the other kind of meat is more expensive. If we had a grinder, we could grind the turkey or chicken thighs and bre*sts, but we do not have one. I bought Italian sausage but my husband did not like that too much. He said it was too spicey.
