Whats with the canned soup? |
|
Can someone please tell be why the price of canned soup has skyrocketed to almost an increas of 100%? Thats right some of them have doubled in price and I am not just talking about name brands, even the store brands. Last year I remember getting 3 cans of soup(2 tomatoe and one chicken noodle) for $1.00 (one US Dollar). Now the store brand is one can for $1.19 so thats more than 100%. I do not eat alot of soup but like to have some on hand just incase I get a cold because it always feels so good when you have a cold. Used to be people ate soup because it fits in a budget. Now yesterday I checked and I could have bought a 6oz can of white albacore tuna for less than a can of Campbell Tomatoe Rice Soup. Tuna on sale $1.19, soup $1.47. No wondor people are getting heavy its even cheaper to get a double cheeseburger for 99 cents. So I am startring to think this is the way the government and big business will kill us off. Raise the prices of anything healthy! Any thoughts? Onion rings or fries with that greasy double cheeseburger? (2 for $3 at DQ)

1. cobrateacher (4212) | 1 month ago | Hi, Muscles! The way prices are increasing on everything makes me think we all need to have a day of fasting every now and then!

muscles4me (8530) | 1 month ago | Sounds like a good idea to me. And while we are at it we can stay home and save on gas and turn off the TV and computers and save on electricity, use a low watage light bulb and pray and read the bible and pray books.

momtrying2makeit (2292) | 1 month ago | You know a fast is good for you once in awhile. I think anyone that can with having health problems from it should try it. I look at it this way with all the issues we have been facing. If we all refused to drive for one day the country would come to a halt! This would force gas prices down and cause a refresh of our current ecomny. Take care but always make sure if you start a fast that you are prepared and ask a doctor as well.

2. catdla1 (2630) | 1 month ago | I've noticed that a lot of everyday staples have skyrocketed in price. Probably the prices reflect rising feed prices and reflect what the manufacturer has spent in recalls (if they've had any). Anything that raises the production cost is going to be passed on to us, the consumers. You should check out Aldi's for staples and canned goods. I find that most of their prices are about what they were last year, maybe just a tad higher. We are saving about half on canned goods, and other staples like flour, sugar, etc. I prefer their olive oil to anything I can get in a grocery store. If you haven't been to Aldi's before, they sort of mix regular size items with the no-frill shopping done at club warehouse stores. You bring your own bags or boxes. When you take a cart you leave a deposit, which you get back when you return the cart. They do a lot to cut their operating costs...and that savings is passed on. There are 3 of them in St. Louis too.

muscles4me (8530) | 1 month ago | I live near the newest Aldis but I buy such small quantities becasue I live alone. I will check them out someday. Give the pooch a hug for me again. Are you in St, Louis also?
| |
|
|
catdla1 (2630) | 1 month ago | That's the beauty of Aldi's. You don't have to buy quantities any larger that what you normally do. Unlike food clubs, they carry only normal, everyday sizes. Most condensed soups and vegetables are 45 cents, and that's just an example of their pricing. If you go there, let me know what you think of it.

3. malamar (437) | 1 month ago | The price of almost all staples has risen drastically over the past several months. You are right, if you dine out on specials and/or with coupons, oftentimes fast food can actually cost you less. This does not bode well for health care costs in the future, does it?
Fruit and vegetables have also gone up considerably, making it more and more costly to eat with health and nutrition in mind.

malamar (437) | 1 month ago | I hear you! I live in a rural farming community where produce has always been available at roadside stands nearly all summer long. This year, even those prices have increased.

4. dragon54u (9464) | 1 month ago | I've noticed that, too. I no longer eat canned soup because of the high sodium content but the price is ridiculous!
I have long said that poor people--and middle class now, too--are overweight because it's cheaper. Look at the prices of healthy foods compared to junk foods and processed foods. Education won't help--people want good and healthy food but it's too expensive!
Everything has gone up. We have to eat, and they have us by the short hairs!

|
muscles4me (8530) | 1 month ago | Yes they do have us by the short hairs. Even taking vitamins to help out is difficuly for the low income because they can not afoord the vitamins. I think if all these increases keep up we will see a rie in suicide among the minimum wage people as well as anyone who makes under $11 an hour.

6. much2say (624) | 1 month ago | I think the prices for everything have skyrocketed!! For years now, I've only bought canned soup IF it's on sale AND IF I have a coupon for it. Canned soup has always been on the expensive side to me.
I try not to buy canned soups though. Many of them have too much sodium and MSG (which gives our whole family a headache). I try to make batches of homemade soup and sometimes freeze them so I have it on hand. You can put loads of meat and vegetables (or even make use of your leftovers) - making it healthier and cheaper!
Maybe check into those boxed soups - they aren't chunky, but you can always add stuff to it. Also, check places like Target, Walmart, Kmart . . . places that carry some food but are not a grocery chain. Many of the grocery chain items are seriously more expensive!

muscles4me (8530) | 1 month ago | hehe. Some people do not necessarily buy only what they like but try to fit in a budger. Homemade soup for one makes too much and i hvae very little freezer space and what is in my freezer is my steaks and fish.

muscles4me (8530) | 1 month ago | I am watching for the sales on soup. I would rather buy a piece of fish (4oz piece for $1.19) than spend money on a can of soup but like I said its a stock up item for me. I do not worry about the sodium as I have low blood pressure anyway.

10. Polly1 (8463) | 1 month ago | Last week I bought a can of store brand soup and was shocked too. Cream of mushroom for $1.19. Its everywhere, its getting to where you can't afford to eat. It is cheaper to eat at the fast food places, they have a dollar menu.
