Movies based on true murders  |

|  I'm reading this book about notorious crimes. And one chapter was about notorious murderers/murderess. And there were details of their crimes and also some extra information about their crimes being made into movies like the crime of Juliet Hulme and Pauline Parker who killed Pauline's mother because they believed that her mother was trying to break up their friendship. This was made into a movie by Peter Jackson "Heavenly Creatures". And the most recent movie "An American Crime" was based on the true murder of Sylvia Marie.
How do you feel about movies based on true murders? Some of them are pretty sensationalized like Natural Born Killers which was inspired by the true crimes of Charlie Starkweather and his girlfriend. The movie inspired another pair of teenagers to commit similar crimes.
Don't you think by dramatizing these crimes, film producers are romanticizing these crimes and impressionable teenagers will want to emulate them especially if the actors or actresses who play the parts are those that they idolize?

| |  I agree with you they do make big impressions on the young minds of our teens. But i also believe that the teens that would commit crimes like these have problems to begin with, and if they did not copy the movie they would eventually do something else,

Yes, true crime movies are very sensational.
I don’t know if you’ve watched THE STEPFATHER? This movie was based on the true story of a mass murderer, John List. Very scary. I saw the original movie of 1987 and now there is a new remake of it out in theaters. Another true crime movie I saw recently that is quite disturbing is RIVER’S EDGE, a dark social based on actual events.
Both movies were really good.
I have no clue if Crime stories could inspire violent acts regarding teenagers or anyone for that matter. But I speculate it could very well happen. It’s certainly a controversial subject that needs to be sorted out.

| | Violence breed violence. If our children are brought up in a world full of violence they might think that violence is the norm and act accordingly. I don't like movies that romanticize violence and crimes like Bonnie And Clyde. Sociologists have done research on children who are brought up by parents who are criminals and they found that these children think that what their parents do are okay and not wrong. So if our children are constantly exposed to violence in movies and television, they might think that it's all right to be violent. That is a scary thought. | | | |

| |  I love horror movies but I hate the slasher kind and all of the horror movies that are based on true stories (Hostel, the Hills Have Eyes) end up being slasher movies. But I do like the crime drama approach like Zodiac with Jake Gyllenhaal or Black Dahlia with Josh Hartnett. Both of these movies focused more on the people trying to solve the murders than on the actual murder so I don't think there is a lot of chance of teens (or anyone) using them as inspiration for committing their own murders. But, yeah, in cases like Natural Born Killers that focus on the killers, I can see where it could but I agree with the person above who said if they will kill someone because of a movie they probably would have killed someone without the movie, it just maybe wouldn't have been as graphic.
