2. srganesh (3326) | 1 month ago | Well,I am already married and I am from India. We don't have surnames but only initials. It is followed for ages that the woman carries her husband's name for her initials and the kids carry their father's name for initials. Now,the want of giving the kids, both the father and mother's initials have risen and in the future such questions will not arise.Cheers!

fjaril (4337) | 1 month ago | you mean by intials.. just a letter? one? two? So now kids are given a letter from each parent? Do I understand correctly,, the woman takes her husbands initials attached to her name?
This is very interesting! but I am not sure I have it completely right here. Can you possibly give me an example of how that would look? thanks
| |
|
|
srganesh (3326) | 1 month ago | I will explain to you.Say,my name is apple and my wife's name is orange, then after marriage she will be called,a.orange.And our kids will carry my initial alone, that is a.Now,some people want to give their kids both the initials and in that case,my kids will have a.o. as initials. You catch my point?

3. sarahruthbeth22 (10401) | 1 month ago | I know I am the wrong gender and forgive me for chasing the party.I think it is classy when a woman just adds her hubby's name to hers and uses a hyphen in between her maiden name and his. I think the guys who want could do that.

fjaril (4337) | 1 month ago | Well well,Look who has come to grace my presence! What a grand idea you have and I like it. I see it much here and in some other places as well. Great idea, actually as no one loses the identity but rather gains a new perspective.. the hyphen showing the connection of one to the other.. perfect sense to me. Back when my own parents got married this was already being done. My wife and I have kept our own surnames.
If we had had children together, the child's surname would have been hyphenated, as well, as belonging to BOTH our family trees.. which seems correct.. to MEE, I mean..My wife's name would not disappear.

sarahruthbeth22 (10401) | 1 month ago | My view of marriage is very, very old fashioned.I see it as two families blending, not two people finding love and then marrying. So by a wife keeping her maiden name And adding her new name . she honors both families at the same time.

4. thea09 (4363) | 1 month ago | Well fjaril, speaking as a man, which I'm obviously not, but have to say as I'm not this is a very sexist question only available to men, and as we've already established that the actual number of mylot active members is 132, you're excluding a lot of people from answering.
So speaking as a man I must say it would depend on the number of goats and olive trees held by the opposite species. If I was just looking to further my land holdings and potential to sell them all off to become mega rich, of course I would take her name if it also involved taking her olive trees, goats, donkeys, and possibly taverna, but I am going to try to hold out for a supermarket and a few rental properties as well.

thea09 (4363) | 1 month ago | Well as a man I would have to find another woman who did have those things as I wouldn't be giving up my name for one crabby old sheep.

5. Hatley (20690) | 1 month ago | hi fjaril I am not a guy but I am all for the idea if men wanted to do it, I would love to have hyphenized my last name with his, but he probably would not have wanted that. At the time I had not thought of that possiblity. Now I am a widow so much too late. we should not lose our own identities when we marry.

6. cloudwatcher (3336) | 1 month ago | Well, here is yet another woman butting in where she isn't invited.
Please permit me to answer as if I was a man (and please note that I have no desire whatever to be a man. I am happy to be a female)
If I was a man, I would take my responsibility as a man and be the head of the home. Now, this does NOT mean being a dictator or the big boss. As the head of the home, I would discuss everything with my wife (and sometimes with our children) seeking their input and agreeing together, but the final decision would be mine and I would accept full responsibility.
As the head of the home I would love my wife as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for it. Now that is self-giving, sacrificial love. When I love my wife in that way, she will have no reluctance to my being the head of the home.
Of course, she would have taken MY name when we married. Our children will bear the same name and we will be a complete family unit, sharing everything together. We would be ONE in every way.
Does it work? YES!!! This has worked for my husband and I for almost 50 years of a VERY happy marriage.

fjaril (4337) | 1 month ago | aah Cloudwatcher.. trust you to stop the merrygoround and start the peaceful music. The way you describe it is how many many people will never ever experience it and that is a shame.. to never know this kind of worth and love without their being sheep and pigs or money involved..I am very grateful that YOU have had this experience yourself and still do. Very grateful indeed! Thankyou for this lovely description you have given. You have a great gift, my dear friend. Thankyou that you are here.! good night and sleep well!

In truth I was willing but I was told that it would have to be at a price. 23 years later I am still waiting to see what the price is! I fear it may well be many years yet so in the meantime I shall just have to keep paying the bill and waiting to see.

fjaril (4337) | 1 month ago | wellwell! How very fine to see you here, as I sing the hallelujah song all the while.
My parents were very traditional also.. My mother took my father's name and thus, HER name was hyphenated.. and we kids received the name of our father. I never had a problem with it but DID start to question it in later years when my brother married and they kept each their birth names! Their kids now have the names of both parents hyphenated together..( No THE NAMES, not the parents.. sheeesh!
Must be cruel fate, this, eh? that you should know this from me and be driven totally crazy??
But, DO tell me.. otherwise is all well??
