Do you give coins to the street children? |
|
I used to, but nowadays I only give food like crackers, biscuits or candies. My father used to scold me not to give money to street children because there are lots of them and whenever you give money to one, others would make a crowd. It was later on that I realized that it's not really necessary to give money because most street children only buy cigarettes to smoke or other illegal substances. Giving food is much safer and healthier.

1. Binthu (3046) | 2 months ago | Hi Nrtan,
Most of the times I used to give the coins to the street kids or children when they are requested me, and also I am thinking that to give the foods instead of the coins, because they may be misused the money. So as you have said that we should give the foods to the street children in order to have the good health to them, so better to do the service and liked to give the foods related products to them in order to help them . I am sincerely thinking that I would give the coins to the children in next time, when they are requested me .
Have a nice day.

nrtan2000 (1026) | 2 months ago | I see what you mean. Some are dependent on asking or begging for money and they're not learning anything from that. Yea, well, I think what they need is an adviser. They would never realize that if they'll stick being beggars.

|
onlinemoneyjourney (118) | 2 months ago | I agree. For many, it is easier to make money begging than to get a paying job. They play on the emotions of those 'more fortunate' and tend to make you feel guilty for having what they don't. Some children are forced by their parents to beg - they are obviously seen as more of a charity case than an adult - and the parents spend the money on alcohol or drugs.
If everyone stopped giving them money, they would be forced to find employment and earn a living like other people. When you are given things for free you appreciate them less than if you paid for them yourself.

3. Lucky09 (719) | 2 months ago | hi nrtan^^;; hhmmm, you have nice discussions today. anyway, as much as possible i don't want to give money to these children as i don't know where will they use it..buy food or buy stuffs that harm them. i like to help them but i also don't want to be any help for them to buy drugs that are usually common nowadays for street children. so i would just give food if i am carrying some. atleast i would know they will eat it.

mzz663 (1018) | 2 months ago | We don't have street children here, we usually see adults asking for money. Some wear signs near the highways, the signs say "will work for food" most really don't want food, just a free handout. Some stand near restaurants with drive thru's, like McDonald's and ask for change so they can buy a coffee or breakfast. One driver ahead of me bought an extra coffee and gave to one of these people and the coffee was thrown on the ground. I've seen documentaries where a lot of these people go later in the day to leave the cities and get into a nice car and have very nice homes. When you think about it, standing around begging for change wouldn't be a bad job....they probably make a lot of money doing this and can beg whenever they want, making it so they have very flexible hours. They don't have to stand on their feet all day, either!

4. owlwings (5178) | 2 months ago | We don't have the problem of kids begging in the UK. There are adult beggars but they are generally begging to fund their drug or alchol habits. In any case, begging is illegal in the UK and people know it, so it's only those that don't care whether they are in or out of prison or who are too drunk/smashed to care that beg.
I would never give money to someone who asked for 'a few pence to buy a coffee'. You can't buy a coffee for a few pence, anyway! If I really thought that they were needy, I would either give them food or maybe take them to a sandwich bar and buy them a sandwich. The few times I have ever tried this, they suddenly went all coy and said they didn't need it really. Of course ... because all they wanted was enough to buy more cheap cider or sherry (or drugs)!
Buskers (street musicians and performers) are different. Many of them are doing it because they like to perform (and it's actually quite good money in a tourist city like ours). They are doing the passer by a service by keeping live music and street performance alive; they are showing of their (sometimes excellent) skills and, above all, they are actually 'working'. I not infrequently give money to buskers if I feel that they have talent. In that case I don't stop to ask what they want the money for - I feel that they deserve it for their talent, so why should I ask where it is going?

starsailover (951) | 2 months ago | Hi owlwings: Is begging illegal in the UK? I didn't know it and i found that this is not either a solution to treat these persons like criminals for doing that. They need help and jail won't make them better persons. In some cases they need to go to rehab, in case they're children the State must take care of them before the grow up and become criminals.

owlwings (5178) | 2 months ago | Begging (that is, asking people on the street for money - unless one is collecting for charity and has a license) is illegal in the UK. We don't have child beggars in the way that you do simply because of that.
In your country I think that you will find that many beggars - children, women carrying infants and so on - are actually part of organised crime rackets. They are employed to beg, in other words, by very wealthy criminals or, sometimes, just by their families (who are actually reasonably well-off as a result of having numerous children who are taught to be good actors).
Don't be fooled by appearances (or if you ever stop long enough to listen to their stories). They are well-trained to make their living as beggars and their families or employers do pretty well out of it!

|
owlwings (5178) | 2 months ago | Why should the State be responsible for the kids who are begging? The State is (or should be) responsible for eliminating crime and public disorder. Once it acknowledges where the real problem is (that people employ kids and women with babies to beg) so much the better. No, the kids themselves should not be treated like criminals until they are really of an age to understand what being a criminal is. It is the whole organisation that makes such things possible and even acceptable that needs dealing with.
| |
|
|
| frenzybabe (29) | 2 months ago | I just wish that, that would be implemented here in our country. Making begging illegal does somehow eliminate this organized crimes where they use children, woman, blind people or handicapped people just to earn money. There was a film before about the cruelty of society where it shows children had their eyes taken out by these goons so that when they beg, people would get compassionate and give more. Harsh reality yet these had been rampant especially with asian countries. The government may have to create programs to address these issues. But the more responsibility goes to the people. If people tolerate these organized crimes by indirect support through these beggars, then how can the government stop it when the root cause is so deep that you had to start from the seed itself.

5. starsailover (951) | 2 months ago | Hi nrtan: i agree with you and i want to add that some of these kids are exploded by their parents or brothers when they ask for money. It's horrible. The place for a little child is the school not the streets! If you want to help children for real there are a lot of charity programs that help kids but giving money to them it's not a solution

6. Brad2289 (141) | 2 months ago | I completely agree. I'm in the U.S. and theres more adults, but most of the time they are on the street because they are addicted to seomthing or lost their money in stupid ways. The best thing for them is food or clothes. Or you can give money to a homeless shelter. Giving them money directly is an invitiation for them to waste it and spend it on alcohol or drugs. What you are doing is a good thing and helps them a lot more. Have a good day and happy MyLoting

7. megumiart (3640) | 2 months ago | thnkfully where I live, I've never seen children on the streets. There are occasionally homeless people standing on the side of the streets holding signs, asking for money. We have a big drug problem in the area, and most of the homless struggle with addiction, so I don;t usually give them money.

8. yuna15 (1122) | 2 months ago | I would have to agree with you. I never give money to street children. I used to when I was younger. And you'll never know which one of them is handled by a syndicate. So it's much better to give them food. If ever I would give money to poor children that is if they're selling something. Even as simple as plastic bags or a handful of veggies.

10. mymelodake (901) | 2 months ago | I myself don't give money to street kids, because it's either they use the money to gamble, or buy bad stuff. Also, my mom once asked a kid begging for money where his parents are, and he said they're at home playing cards. It's really disheartening to hear. Some kids are also very rude when begging so I am less inclined to give. Giving food instead of money is also a good idea, but you should do it with a bit of caution. A friend of my mom once gave bread instead of money, and the people begging are those that she usually finds hanging outside her church. A few days later, the mother of the street kid came up to her and accused her of giving her kid food that's already gone bad. She said her kid got a stomachache because of the bread. My mom's friend was taken aback, but she told the woman that her own daughter had the same bread she gave the kid that day, and nothing was wrong with it.
| |
| |
|
|
| frenzybabe (29) | 2 months ago | That is true. Good thing that that mother of the streetkid did not ask for money in return. People get so creative when it comes to money. They would sometimes use this alibi where the food that was given to them was bad and they had a stomachache and had to be brought to the hospital. In the end, they would be asking money for the hospital bills and medicine stuff.
Sometimes our intention is good. But human nature at times, sad to say, creates ways to abuse these people who have kind heart.
| |
|
|
mymelodake (901) | 2 months ago | Hello, actually I believe the mother intended to extort my mom's friend. Whether her child got a stomachache or not, I'm pretty sure she did it expecting my mom's friend to just hand over some cash.
