Breeding kittens just to make money | | I've been arguing with my cousin about her plans to breed her new kitten. The kitten is barely old enough to reproduce and she has already got it in a breeding program. She says its the cat's right to be able to get pregnant and nobody should spay their cat as it takes away their choice. What about the cat's choice NOT to get pregnant repeatedly just to make money for the owner? And what makes her think she will be able to sell them all anyway, when there are so many already unwanted? Also, the increased risk of FIV when she starts letting her cat out of the house on its own - she doesn't believe her cat could be at risk. Now, she's never been the brightest of people, but right now I believe she is just being selfish and ignorant. She doesn't have ideal circumstances for a pregnant cat anyway, with an almost-two year old running around grabbing everything that moves. She claims if she doesn't sell them, she'll keep them all. How is she planning to do that on her benefit money as both she and her partner are unemployed? There are so many reasons NOT to do this... but she won't listen at all, and keeps saying its HER right and HER choice. Wonder if she's consulted the cat...?

If people are willing to buy an animal, I see no problem in doing so, since the customer would be happy for his new pet and the vendor would also be happy with his money.
Well, the mother cat can get somewhat angry but I believe her owner treats her well, give her food and love.

There are no potato shelters which I know of, where every inch of space is taken up by potatoes in cages waiting to be rehomed. Potatoes don't produce defective potatoes from too many pregnancies, and as far as I'm aware, a potato can't die from reproducing too much.

caragh2608 (1017) | 1 month ago | Yes she does live in a council house, she won't have to worry about vet bills though as the PDSA pays them when you're unemployed (out of other people's donations I believe). Its a tortoiseshell, so its a nice cat but not a pedigree. I just think its disgusting that she got a pet just to try to make money from it.

|
|
vonmac (2097) | 1 month ago | I forgot about the PDSA. Kittens might fetch 20 quid each, but lets face it, anyone wanting a kitten or adult cat can get one easily enough from any amount of places, CPL etc, and cats from places like that will have been vaccinated She might put her council tenancy at risk, hardly worth it for a few quid on the sly.

I told her to give me one good reason she should go ahead and add to a problem which is out of control already... to which she replied, "how is it out of control? It isn't a problem for me, its only you who has a problem with it!" I mentioned she's really dumb, right?

You don't say what breed of cat it is but assuming it's a popular breed there may be some willing buyers. We had a two year old when we bred our cat. He really didn't bother them but if she's set on doing this she should have a place where they can be safe. I don't think you're going to be able to talk her out of it. Maybe give her some encouragement to contact a professional breeder.

caragh2608 (1017) | 1 month ago | Its a tortoiseshell - but there are plenty of those in shelters as it is, so they can't be that popular can they. She's just using the poor animal as a source of income because neither of them have jobs. This is the first cat she has ever owned and she hasn't got a clue about them, but she refuses to accept that someone who has owned cats all their life might know better than her

| | 5. firemom31 (312) | 1 month ago | This is just infuriating. There are so many unwanted animals now, why on earth add to them? Unless an animal is registered, it should be spayed or neutered, period. I could care less if she is doing something to make money under the table, but don't use an innocent creature to do it. I know she's your cousin, but man...

caragh2608 (1017) | 1 month ago | Yeah, she's really getting on her high horse about how its nothing to do with anyone except her. But I think it is. What about the people who end up taking in the unwanted animals, and the charities which struggle to pay for their care? And all the people who donate to help these animals, it'll never be enough if stupid people keep adding to the problem. I've never bought a cat, all mine have been rescue cats because there are so many of them...

| | | | 7. mzz663 (987) | 1 month ago | There are certain kinds of cats that people want to have but can only get them because they're bred. One day I want to get a Persian cat and would most likely have to buy one because I don't think I'll be able to find one in a shelter. It depends on the breed of cat and if the owner/breeder is responsible. Letting the cat outside to get pregnant by any tomcat that might be around is a big mistake. Wonder what your friend is going to do when that kitten grows into a cat and she ends up with all kinds of kittens that she can't sell or give away.

Ya thats what I thought....just your every day house cat. There are so so many people that are giving their kittens away for free that it is silly to think that she is going to make any sort of money on this business adventure. Also the time and money put into caring for the kittens until they are even ready to leave the mother will wipe out any remote possibility of earnings. These are two people that don't work and are getting state help??? gotta love stories like this.

| | | | 10. rogue13xmen13 (7138) | 1 month ago | I am not for this. All of my cats were rescues, or I got them from friends who had pregnant mom cats. I never get pure breed cats because they may not always be healthy, also, there could always be a chance of inbreeding. I am not saying that mixed breed cats are different, but you never know.
Cats are a large responsibility. Small does not cut is. They need lots of food and water every day, shots, medical care (Frisky went to the vet for kidney stones; Dubby went for a wounded paw; Goldie went to the vet twice for a hairball in her small intestine and a two rotten teeth, Goldie is tiny, wasn't healthy when I first got her, and she has very small teeth, her bites have zero effect on me; and Lucky went for a standard check up because he was feral before we adopted him, cats are costly, you don't even want to know how much I have paid in vet bills), cats need comfort, they need licenses (some states require this), they need grooming (Goldie is long-haired and she has to be groomed a lot, in fact, she somehow got gum in her fur the other day and I had to spend two hours getting that out, home remedies weren't going to cut is, I had to cut the stuff out of her fur and bathe her), and they sometimes need things to play with to keep them occupied.
After the four cats I have, I am not having any more, I don't even know how I am affording the four that I have? I love my cats, which is why I do so much for them, but they aren't cheap.

caragh2608 (1017) | 1 month ago | I have 2 cats (both sensibly spayed/neutered!) and I didn't buy either of them. The female is a long haired tortie, she was given to us by my daughter's Godparents - one of 2 surviving kittens from THEIR overbred cat, who they have thankfully now had spayed. Before her, they gave us a male, who died at 18 months, he was the only survivor of his litter from the same mother. The male we have now is part Siamese, he's gorgeous and friendly but has tummy problems and messes himself in the house. I suspect there may have been inbreeding in his background. I got him from a rescue centre where he had been brought as a stray, possibly someone didn't want to clean up the mess he makes:( My cousin is of the opinion that all cats in rescue centres were dumped because they were horrible, aggressive animals... I completely agree with everyone who thinks she's an idiot!

rogue13xmen13 (7138) | 1 month ago | My Goldie is also a long-haired tortie, and she is high maintenance. If she is not bathed or if she does not get brushed when needed, her fur start to bunch up and it's really bad. I have to give her Nutri-Cal because of her intestine. She has to eat special food for the kind of problems she has. I love her, but she's costly.
All of my cats are spayed and neutered, they have to be in order for them to get licensed. In my area, all cats and dogs must have licenses and must be vaccinated. If you spay and neuter them the licensing fee for them is much cheaper, compared to a cat that is not spayed or neutered.
To those people who think that cats are easy to take care of and do not cost very much, I have a news flash for them. Take care of my cats for one day, and look at our bills and then tell us it is easy.

caragh2608 (1017) | 1 month ago | The first cat we had after our daughter was born was given to us by people we knew. They had 5 cats, dozens of rabbits, birds, and 3 dogs. The mother wanted to get rid of the cats so she could get more rabbits, which she bred to supplement her benefit money. It was quite clear when we got him that he hadn't been taken care of. He had suffered from a skin complaint for years and the woman had been treating it with tea tree oil... within weeks of living with us, it cleared up, untreated. The shine returned to his coat and he went from a scrawny, scabby creature to a perfectly healthy-looking cat. The huge mistake I made was allowing them to take care of him when we went away for 2 weeks and couldn't get anyone else to do it. On our return, he appeared and smelled as if he had had some kind of alcohol spilled on him, and it wouldn't wash off. Not long after that, he had a seizure and died. The vet told us he had internal bleeding, kidney problems, and a number of other things which we didn't know about. He was only 8 years old. How disgusting is that?
| |
|
|
caragh2608 (1017) | 1 month ago | The vet also gave me a receipt for £300 for the treatment which didn't help him. Since then, all my cats have been insured from day one!

rogue13xmen13 (7138) | 1 month ago | We can do that here in the United States, but it is so very expensive. It is not worth to buy it. You pay as much for the insurance as you would for the anything that you would have to pay without it. Also, if it is anything like the regular health insurance companies here in the states, if your kitty has a pre-existing medical condition, which two of mine have, then they won't insure the poor little kitty. I am going to lose my own insurance in a few months, and I will barely have the money to pay for myself let alone my kitties. I don't know how I am going to handle things when that happens. I hate living in the United States sometimes. Our health care system is crummy, and everyone has to pay the price for it.
