Watching the news - healthy or harmful? |
|
I am wondering what everyone thinks about the news these days. It seems like everything that goes on there is negative, and the stations are more concerned with their ratings than they are about the emotional well-being and sanity of the human population who watches. Who wants to wake up with the morning coffee and hear that a woman and child were brutally murdered in their home? That doesn't set a very positive tone for the day, and hearing something like that, I am more likely to feel a little negative for the rest of the day. Imagine this times millions of others who are affected in the same way? That's a lot of debby downers walking around each day.
I personally don't watch the news, but it seems as if everywhere I go there is someone talking about something terrible that they saw "on the news" and I get stuck listening to it. The news is also always on at the gym that I go to, so if I forget my ipod then that's what I listen to. I think the news is an awful portrayal of life these days, and doesn't focus on anything positive. I believe that is what we need most in this world - more positivity. If the news would only let us know about the good and take out a lot of the bad they report, I think they would find that we would be an emotionally and mentally healthier society. Instead its issues that we have no control over - like the war. I understand keeping us updated, but there is nothing we can do about 90% of the stuff they report, so why go into such extensive detail about that stuff? What are you doing to us? The media loves what they do - and it's reinforcing people to commit crimes as they see on television. Those are my thoughts - what are yours?

1. natnickeep (221) | 1 month ago | I don't watch the news for information purposes. Like you said most of the news is for media related purpose. No news is good news. The news these days is stuff we don't really need to know, stuff blown out of proportion and the same news over and over in a somewhat different context. Basically it is all crap, excuse my lingo there. Anyhow I do however like weird and wacky news stories, just to see what they will come up with next to keep us more entertained and less informed.

Most news channels I see these days seem extended versions of soap operas and they keep on repeating such sensational news every hour with nothing new in between! And every incident is supposed to be ‘breaking news’…and all they report are gory incidents of killings and kidnappings and war etc! And the impact they have on people and kids in particular is quite alarming. As you said, vivid description of such gory incidents put thoughts on people's minds and they think of trying out new ideas of crimes. even then, I watch news channels as they keep me posted on world events and are better than the other regular soap channels.

3. jpso138 (3643) | 1 month ago | I do watch and read the news just for information and too keep me updated of the things that is happening around me. It is really sad to note that most of the things that are happening this present times are bad. Bombing, killing and other many silly things. Truly the world is different as compared to the past. However this are things that I have accepted already. I do agree with you that some news and stations thus makes simple things sensational. Its part of their gimmick and promotion, after all more of them are after for the rating instead of true service.

8. itsmauricecassidy (269) | 1 month ago | I dont watch the news that often however I read the papers everyday and I think that it is important and "healthy" because we do need to know what's happening in the world. If for example your work place was shut down and it was in the papers for some reason, you'd want to know what had happened and why it shut down. It's mainly killing that you hear on the news which is why I dont watch it and rather read it because they detail it to you and I feel really unpleasant afterwards.

9. AndrewFreyne (2521) | 1 month ago | Most of the news will always be bad and this is unfortunate but it's the kind of thing that makes huge news stories! I think that we are influenced a lot by what we see on the television and as we are seeing a lot of bad news on a daily basis then it's very easy to assume that the whole world has gone down the drain as it were! I'm thinking that if the news started changing and it showed nothing but good news then the ratings would definitely sink very fast! I love watching the news but it's not nice hearing about people being murdered and cities being bombed all the time. Andrew

10. irene3184 (669) | 1 month ago | Most of the news is completely useless. How does it help to know that Kobe Bryant is entering a formal plea or that the mother of the Osmond family has died? These things aren’t interesting, they aren’t important, and they aren’t useful. Reading through them everyday is like some sort of intellectual busywork. I read a whole day’s worth of trivia. I’m so well-informed!”I suppose some news could be useful.Because the day-to-day news isn’t just useless — it’s terrible!
