Man fired for "One Nation Under God" button | | Home Depot has a right to implement dress codes for its employees and I support their right to enforce that policy. However, I don't think they should have fired the guy UNLESS he refused to remove the button. And considering he wore it for a year, I'm guessing he refused to remove it, so they were well... within their rights. When you are on the clock you agree to abide by company policy, which he already knew prohibited wearing anything not approved by management.

That girl who was fired for wearing a berka caused a huge fuss, and the ACLU is probably smokin' at the ears since it's not Christianity targeted, but that's a private business for ya.
My beef is with the petty annoyance crap. I haven't read the article yet, but I'm sure that one of the "resons" for them wanting buttonless employees has to do with the ONE person in one million who may, possibly, if they're having a bad day and have nothing else to complain about, take "offense" to it.
Everything you don't like has to be removed from sight, because...? The crap is too much for me. And it's definitely not a political thing, per se. A few hundred years ago, if you were "different" from the pack in the slightest, they'd remove you permanently via a stake in the ground and a brush fire! Now it has kinda quasi-reversed, with the "different" person being the one claiming life-altering offense to something, and that means NO ONE can do it.
Okay, now my liberal bashing for the day! I just wouldn't feel right without it lol
Ironically, most of the liberals (far-left progressives, mind you) are all for this huge, glorious, utopian community idea, yet anyone straying from their pack receives the 2009 version of being burned at the stake. They're no different than the psycho Puritans of old in my estimation.
I believe that personal responsibility--living your OWN life and doing for you--should include tolerance of others and not complaining for someone or something to be completely removed from existence just because you don't agree with it. And this is especially true for something petty like a button. Yeah, it's the store's policy, evidently, but the "why" of the policy needing to be in place is the problem.
Extreme examples like employees showing up naked, wearing Hitler costumes, refusing to wash their clothes and making folks gag, etc, I can see. The petty grievance stuff, however, is light years beyond me.

sndcain36 (2667) | 3 months ago | I basically agree with you, but I still support Home Depot enforcing their own dress codes. Even though I agree with the sentiment "One Nation Under God", he was getting paid to represent the company and anything on his uniform needs to represent the company, not his brother in Iraq or his religious views. You don't have free speech when you're getting paid to do a job.
Do you remember that Muslim Target cashier who refused to handle pork items or those cab drivers who refused to carry alcohol or dogs? I called for them to be fired and I feel the same about this issue. When you're getting paid to do a job and the standards are explained ahead of time, you don't really have an excuse for refusing to comply with reasonable standards.

matersfish (866) | 3 months ago | I totally agree with HD's right to fire the guy. The policy is there. Now it is what it is and you either abide or hit the bread lines. My beef is with the actual reasons a company would have to put a policy like that in place. The fact that someone in America would take offense to that is mind-boggling to me -- and that's the only reason that a button like that would make it on a policy list: afraid it might cause a fuss.

I think if he wore it for a year he got his message across and I am pretty sure he had been requested to stop wearing it more than once and therefore should have been fired. I think if he was allowed to get away with not obeying the rules he would be leaving the company open to any employee wearing what ever they chose.

sndcain36 (2667) | 2 months ago | I'm guessing they were being patient with him because his brother was in the military....
All corporations have dress codes and I respect their right to enforce them. I wear a uniform and I'm not allowed to wear earrings larger than a nickel or more than two rings on each hand or bright red nail polish. And I know for a fact the only thing I'm allowed to put on my shirt is my name tag. I knew this when I took the job and if I violate the rules then I do so at my own peril.
It's his own fault for giving Home Depot a legitimate reason to terminate him.

suspenseful (17151) | 2 months ago | If an employee who happens to be an atheist, wears a "I hate God" logo or a homosexual wears a tag that says "Pink Power." and the company allows it, then that wold be discrimination. And if employees are not allowed to say Merry Christmas and yet can say Happy Hannukah, or There is only one god and His name is Allah, then that would be discrimination. AS it is, if you were forbidden by your company to not wear loud nail polish and anyone who puts anything on except the basic company uniform and tag, then they should have warned him as soon as he put it on and give examples of those who were of the first sentence who were not allowed to advertise their beliefs. So the company was at fault, not just him, for not warning him ahead of time. I do believe there are ways to get around it.

suspenseful (17151) | 2 months ago | My husband used to work for the Cn (Canadian National Railroad) and they had those employee handbooks. It is not just a simple pamphlet that you assume, it gives a whole lot of legalize, and paragraphs A, B, numerals, etc. that unless you are an avid reader and have a University education, it is hard to decipher. That is because most of the employee rule books are written by lawyers, and they go into so much detail, that is often best for the boss to tell the employee what rules must not be broken.
