question for pet owners | | Ok most of you know that i have 2 adorable little cats "max and dusty" (well max isn't that little) but he is adorable and i just love both my cats to bits, just lately Dusty has been running out under my feet causing me to trip over her, the minute i stand up she's there right in front of me and i swear she's gonna be the death of me one day, i have just been in the kitchen cutting up veg with a very sharp knife and as i walked to the sink, she ran into my feet and i tripped and fell against the cooker almost cutting myself, it really scared me, i was so shocked that i shouted at her and she ran out of the room, she does this quite alot, the minute i stand up she's there, does any of your pets do this to you? be it a cat or a dog or what ever other pet you have?

| | | | | | | | 1. mentalward (4391) | 3 months ago | I have 2 dogs and 1 cat who all do that to me. They're almost always at my feet, no matter where I am or how far I move. I've learned to always, and I have to accentuate ALWAYS, look before I take a step.
Oh, I've been tripped by them on more than one occasion but, now that it's happened to me I'm more cautious than ever before. I think that, what it boils down to, at least with some of our furry friends, we either adjust to their bad habits or find them a new home. It has nothing to do with love. We can love them to death, yet can't tolerate some of the things they do. Sometimes, they'll just be better off (and us, too) if we find them a new home.
I had a cockapoo whom I loved extremely, yet she refused to be housebroken. I spent two years trying everything in the book, including crating and those special pee pads that are supposed to attract them to it. She would pee all around the pad but never on it.
When I started having to shampoo my carpet more than once a week, I said no more. I cried, but found her a great new home. I warned her new family about her problem but they said they could deal with it. I just hope they did!
But, when our pets cause us physical harm, they really should go to a new home. I'm at an age when falling could kill me, from breaking a hip or something and developing pneumonia, blood clots or something from being incapacitated. (I had an uncle who died that way.)
I'm so glad to hear that you weren't hurt other than being very scared by you incident. I think I'd have to give Dusty a lot of thought if I were in your shoes. Maybe you can learn to look down each time you intend to take a step? I know we shouldn't have to do that but, if we want to keep our wayward pets, it's a small adjustment to make. I'm glad I've made that adjustment. I'd miss my fuzzy buddies so much if I had to get rid of them.

puddytatt (841) | 3 months ago | well i have thought about getting her re-homed but i just can't, so i may just have to watch where i am walking or maybe lock her in the room while i am busy in the kitchen, she has done this before but this time i could have easily been stabbed, i couldn't get her re-homed, she is a sweet little thing and i would feel so guilty if i turned her over to someone else, she's only just started to settle in, so maybe i should just watch where i walk, she must think that i am going to feed her every time i go into the kitchen because she does eat alot, but i must be careful when she is around, i know she doesn't know that she's doing it, but i could have been really cut up there, i did shout at her which i never do and she skooted outside, she is back now, but she's wary...LOL....maybe this telling off will stop her from doing what she's doing....i must be careful where i walk, or i could just lock her out while i am cutting up veggies....i couls have been making a trip to the hospital now....

puddytatt (841) | 3 months ago | thanks antique, i hope she doesn't do it again, she has in the past and i have gone toppling over, she gets right in front of me and i end up having to dodge around her, that knife i had is super sharp, i use it for chopping up veg and i slices like it's slicing butter, since i shouted at her she's stayed out of my way, infact she's on the table watching me, maybe that shout scared her, but since it happened she's stayed put. bless her.

| | 5. moondancer (2952) | 3 months ago | I'm glad you are alright and that you did not get cut when you fell! I don't really know how to stop this action as I have a few little ones and a big boy that do the same to me. I can not move or get up that they don't get up too and run to get in front of me. Or lift up as I'm stepping over and me catching myself before I hit the floor. Luckily I have end tables and other things around to catch myself with. Some times the wall does that job too.

puddytatt (841) | 3 months ago | lol, i could have stabbed myself tonight, it was so frightening, i was shaking for a few minutes because i came so close to hurting myself, i would have stabbed myself in the throat if i had have landed on the flort, that knife is razor sharp, Dusty does this alot, she gets right in front of me and then i trip over her, so i will have to be very careful the next time she does it, she couls cause me a serious injury...

moondancer (2952) | 3 months ago | Yes, do be careful because she could cause you injury. I worry about this too and must be careful for the same reason. They just do not understand.

| | 6. ElicBxn (15666) | 3 months ago | Try to imagine having 10 of these things under your feet.
You have to learn to not get ahead of your balance and kind of wade thru her. I kick cats all the time trying to move thru them, especially in like hall ways and the like.
Slow down a bit and don't move your weight until you have the foot down. I know its hard to explain, but keep your weight centered over the foot you have down and don't get ahead of your feet, that's how they trip you

|
puddytatt (841) | 3 months ago | thankyou elic, i will remember that, she seems to think that every time i go to the kitchen it's only to feed her, she eats alot, so she will run in front of me which causes me to trip or fall, i could have stabbed myself tonight, she did run off when i shouted at her though, but she's forgiven me for that now, she's fast asleep on my knee...LOL...

ElicBxn (15666) | 3 months ago | you know how a cat will run in front of you then stop?
We have a name for that...
"follow along in front of"
They want to be in front, but don't know where you are going, so they stop to make sure they are going the right way and BAM! You trip, step or otherwise hit them.
Even my SMARTEST cat had a tendency to do that...

| | 7. Opal26 (10229) | 3 months ago | Hey tatty! I have the same problem with my cat Star! He is my black kitty! He is constantly running in front of me and I am always afraid that I am going to break my neck! He see's that I am doing something, but nevertheless walks right in between or in front of my feet so that I am almost tripping over him! My other cats did the same thing to (their deceased). I don't know why the do that! I don't think that they are trying to hurt us or do it on purpose, but they are constantly getting in the way! I think Dusty just loves you so much that she wants to "help" you as Star does me! Or at least I hope that's what those little black cats are doing!

|
puddytatt (841) | 3 months ago | lol, i don't think they do it on purpose, how would they know how to do that, lol, but she can cause me a nasty accident if she keeps doing it, i will just have to keep her out of the kitchen when i am cooking because i could have cut my throat tonight, i came so close to it....it was pretty nerve wrecking just thinking about it...

| | 9. Hatley (22216) | 3 months ago | hi puddytatt yes I had a black cat we called Midnight and he would lie down in the dark spots in the hall so that I nearly squashed him once, so I installed a little night light, and I will'be darned if he took to going into the bathroom if we left the door ajar. once my hubby stepped on his tail as my hubby did not turn on the light, so I told him, serves you right,a black cat you just cannot see in the dark until its almost too late. So I found some florescent stickers and put them on his collar.voila we could see Midnight in the dark.

puddytatt (841) | 3 months ago | hey that's a great idea, reflectors on her collar, ok i will have to get some of them, she does hide under the table sometimes then she will jump out playfully and get my feet, and i just cannot see where she is, LOL, but last night i could have had a terrible accident, she has been quiet since i told her off, and she has not followed me into the kitchen since then...LOL, maybe my loud voice scared her a bit, i never shout at my cats but the shock of falling with that knife scared the bejeezus out of me, it could have been a serious accident, but i am watching her and making sure she is ahead of me when i go to the kitchen, she is a sweetie but can be clumsy sometimes...LOL...bless her little heart....

| | 10. saizo6 (580) | 3 months ago | I have two chihuahuas and they do this to me sometimes. It usually happens when I go off to work or leave the house for a few hours. When I come back home those two are basically all over me. I guess they are just really excited to see me after a while. They like to follow me around and jump at the back of my legs. There was this one time they did that to me when I was holding some grocery bags. It caused me to topple over because they caught me by surprise. I ended up dropping the bags and falling over. My sister was laughing like a crazy person at me.

puddytatt (841) | 3 months ago | oh i know our little furbabies don't mean to cause us any harm but it can be pretty dangerous can't it? i was so upset that i told my cat off but the shock made me shout at her and she ran so fast out of the door, i never shout at my cats...poor thing, but i almost stabbed myself, i am going to take hatleys advice and put some reflectors on her collar so i can see her better, she is jet black and i cannot see her at times...

saizo6 (580) | 3 months ago | I know what you mean. I always feel guilty after yelling at my dogs, especially the male one whose name is Toby. I can never stay mad at him. Every time I yell at him he'll go curl up in a ball in a corner. All you'll see are these big watery eyes looking back at you. It's instant guilt trip.
