That time of year when the stairs start to creak! AND the floor at the foot of our bed!

okej,, relax. it is nothing to do with Hallowe’en, of course.
It is when I walk in certain places! And I have tried, like a tightropewalker to tiptoe in a different spot.. noOOOOO!! It doesn’t make a difference.
Can you??

Hi fjaril, not a problem at all to report from this end on the subject of tiptoeing. Firstly I've never felt the need to do it, obviously you're the more clumsy sort who makes a lot of noise. lolSecondly I don't have a single floorboard to my name.

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (4535)   ranked 23 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

So. in whose name are they then??blink

myLot reputation of 96/100. thea09 (4672)   ranked 3 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

Ah being difficult today I see. I do not have a floorboard, not any floorboards.

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (4535)   ranked 23 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

Hatley!! hahaha.. I am guessing it must be some Greek beaming?? or do you DO beaming there, dearest thea?? it is probably pronounced differently, but it could be those huge beams they use to build huge ships.. couldn't it?

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (4535)   ranked 23 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

Apparently it costs very much to fix this kind of problem.. It stops when spring and warmer weather returns.. and that doesn't cost us anything!

PLEEEEEEASE tell me you're speaking of creaking floorboards!!! (giggles) I'm NOT gonna tell you where my mind went!!!! blush If you live in a house, you can add a shim near where the creak emits. I have also read that baby powder can help if there is even a small separation between the boards. It hurts my heart to think of your toesies hurting from tiptoeing!!! lol

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (4535)   ranked 23 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

HAHAHAHHAHA 'a shim near where the creak emits'
um.. cryThis is an English site, my friend.. and I cannot decipher this message. It appears to be a message in code in a few different foreign languages. However, I had a very good laugh!! I let the translator have fun with it and so I had fun too. THANKS!

As far as the baby powder goes.. hmmm. yes.. I seem to remember when my daughter was a baby that I put that powder in your seperations, but to put them between the boards.. I have no separations.. at least not in my boards..
You are a dear to send this aid to me.. baby powder would indeed be cheaper than the carpenter!!

myLot reputation of 94/100. LadyMarissa (2716)   ranked 440 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

Sorry, English is the ONLY language I know!!! Hmmmm, how do I say this so your translator can read it??? Go under the floor & have your wife walk near the foot of the bed, Listen for where the squeaking sounds comes from. It's probably close to a support beam (the wood that helps support the floor). Take a small wedged piece of wood & push it in between the beam & the floorboard. This will support the floor where it is squeaking. If you pushed it in good & tight, the squeak will be gone. Have your wife walk near the foot of the bed again & listen for the squeak. The squeak should be gone. This should be cheaper than baby powder & MUCH cheaper than a carpenter!!!

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (4535)   ranked 23 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

O I love it when you get all knowing and technical and worked up.. okej, I am listening,, the support beam supports the, right, the floor!

And this is ever sooo much more fun, this whole ‘stand here and squeak there and my wife squeaks and I push a wedge in good and tight.. and then the squeak is gone.. poor squeak.. w00t

I know exactly what you are saying,, but I am not prepared to rip up my floor, nor my stucco ceiling below ‘said floor’.

It may be cheaper than getting the carpenter, but the baby powder is beginning to sound a whole lot better.. not as much fun, mind you!
but if you aren't here to do the job.. well.. what can one do otherwise??wink

myLot reputation of 94/100. LadyMarissa (2716)   ranked 440 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

OMG, you didn't say the bedroom was on the 2nd floor!!! You have 2 choices...listen to the squeak or pay the carpenter...your choice!!! rasp

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (4535)   ranked 23 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

and what happened to choice #3??? the baby powder? I thought we were getting along well with that one, weren't we??rolleyes

myLot reputation of 94/100. LadyMarissa (2716)   ranked 440 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

My guess is you have carpet & won't want to pull it up to get to the boards to use the baby powder. Sprinkle the baby powder in the cracks between the floorboards. The baby powder will work its way in as you walk on the floor. It will stop the boards from rubbing against each other & stop the squeaking sound!!!

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (4535)   ranked 23 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

I am gonna try it because I have just mats over the floor. Thanks very much for the tips because I was at a loss and would have been at a greater loss (financially) if I should need to call a carpenter.

myLot reputation of 94/100. LadyMarissa (2716)   ranked 440 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

Well, surprise, surprise!!! lol
Sprinkle a little bit of baby powder near where it squeaks. Take your broom & sweep into the cracks. Then walk up & down the squeaking board. That should work the bp into the boards.

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (4535)   ranked 23 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

You are a gift!! Thanks my dear, Thanks ever so much!!

myLot reputation of 94/100. LadyMarissa (2716)   ranked 440 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

I just hope it works for you!!! I read your next comment. It should have lasted longer than 4 years!!! May stop you from calling the carpenter though. Good luck & best wishes!!!

Sounds like you live in an old house, ours has floors that are like that, too.

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (4535)   ranked 23 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

The house is exactly 4 years old, 2 days ago, and both inspections in the first 2 years told us that this was minor and would disappear..so nothing to do about it at all sorry.... yes yes.. but they did NOT say,, and will reappear slightly to the left or right next time.. aah the joys.. and when I finally get used to the special squeak,, it disappears because spring temperatures have stolen it..

I DOOO however feel a special kinship now with you,, seeing as we share a similar problem.. it draws people together, doesn't it?rolleyes

That's a serious problem. It's getting close to Christmas, and if Santa can't sneak in and out, how will he leave presents? You could try stringing your tightrope above the floor, but that has it's own problems. If some one tripped you could be looking at a lawsuit.

When the weather gets cold, it gets very dry. The wood used in your home would also become drier and shrink as a result, causing the squeaks and creaks. Those that aren't from you, that is rasp. Had you tried adding moisture to the air inside your home? When I used a woodstove, I always kept a pot of water on top. Now with floor registers, I have pans filled with small rocks that I pour water into. It had helped with a lot of the squeaks here. Except for when some one touches me with cold hands. Those squeaks have gotten louder. lol

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (4535)   ranked 23 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

We have a water heating system in the house with radiators in many places. Of course this has begun AFTER the heat has ben on for a few weeks!!

Your idea is very sound!! There is not a problem to set water about to bring moisture into the air. Of course that is why I NOW have creaks.. the heat is on!!

How very smart. And I feel a little dumb. Thanks so for this tip!!

myLot reputation of 99/100. catdla1 (2747)   ranked 1,253 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

You are quite welcome! Let me know if the added moisture works, ok?

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (4535)   ranked 23 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

yes'm!!I am very positive now and feel so clever.. not becuase I came up with anything but that I know good smart people who know stuff and swallowed pride to ask! Thanks so for turning on a light for me!! it feels darn good!! Shouldn't we hug or something now??lol

myLot reputation of 99/100. catdla1 (2747)   ranked 1,253 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

hahahahha.. THAT is what we had tonight to supper and I have a few left over also for tomorrow,, I will wait till they cool a little more and press them into this keyboard and command th emouse to send them along.. does that work for you??w00t

myLot reputation of 99/100. catdla1 (2747)   ranked 1,253 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

Sounds fine to me. thumbup I'm sure that squished meatball tastes as good as a round one. There is a bonus for you doing that. You will be able to start a discussion about how to remove smashed meatball from between your keyboard keys raspwhistle

hi fjaril oh you have an older house I bet and in the colder
weather the wood settles, and creaks and no matter how you'walk it will still creak. just the house settling down in its old
age.NOthing to worry about as long as you don't have beasties and goblins and things that go squeak in the night. happylolconfused

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (4535)   ranked 23 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

hahahaha.. you are getting pretty personal there, my friend! I promise I won't burden you with that!
And would you believe this house is only 4 years old, since a couple of days ago.. but I think we are on to something, it is heated now because of the cold and the house is too dry? yes.. I needed mylotters to clue me in.. Sometimes I worry about me, Hatley, but I am grateful for my friends here who help me out. Thanks, dear one.

"That time of year" - I presume this is because winter is approaching and the timber contracts a tiny bit?

My only suggestion is giving the floor a bit of warmth, but I'll leave the "how" up to your imagination. I wouldn't suggest a fire, but I'm sure you'll think of something.

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (4535)   ranked 23 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

hahahahaha.. yes'm.. best we leave that up to me.. hahaha.. I did 'pet' the steps this morning as I wiped away dust as I do everyday because we have a dog.. ..well, one does what one must, right?

And yes, I have learned it is because the heat is on and therefore the timbers are reacting..Sometimes I just am not ''home'' upstairs', if you know what I mean, and need help to figure this stuff out. Ask a woman, I say! They KNOW'stuff'!!

By The grace of G-d,my house has wall to wall carpet so I don't have to worry.Suggestion, can you put an area rug over the creeky spots?

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (4535)   ranked 23 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

sure could!!rolleyes The 2 areas on the stairs are about 3 by 4 inches inches.. the top step and on the bend, first step...Not too big an area rug required, then.. THAT*S good!. Maybe I can cut it out of the corner of that nice carpet we have in the living room.. hmmm. now THERE*S an idea,, Oh and I probably have to superglue it on for all the traffic the stairs get.. good show!! THANKS!! You are such a precious help I feel a hug coming on!

And to think you have wall to wall carpeting... mmmmm

myLot reputation of 97/100. sarahruthbeth22 (10498)   ranked 656 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

myLot reputation of 97/100. sarahruthbeth22 (10498)   ranked 656 out of 38,434 in life  2 months ago

Woo!Before you cut the rug you have, check your local store and see if they have area rugs. I think a rug that is made as an area rug will have a special backing so it will remain in place. Good Luck.
