People should be discouraged from buying trucks/SUVs Do you agree?  

It was more directed at the many people who do not NEED a truck, rather than those who do need them for their business.

And i wasn't saying they cause accidents, i was saying that when they are involved in accidents, they result in more deaths than car accidents.

They do pollute more, they use more fuel, and therefore emit more CO2 emissions from burning that fuel. Increasing global warming, which effects us all. Diesels actually produce less CO2, but more N0X, which causes local air pollution which causes increased levels of things like respiratory problems for people.

Of course YOU would rather be in a truck in a collision (even though they're not that great if you check NCAP crash tests results on google for example), it's the OTHER PEOPLE that YOU hit that are gonna get killed. (But you might too if you roll over)

Debatably safer for it's own occupants, definitely much less safe for everyone else.

I wasn't really meaning people like you who actually need 4wd and higher ground clearance. You could argue a smaller turbo diesel engine would be more appropriate though (higher torque, higher fuel economy) but thats a different topic.

Actually its not obvious, they're only usually safer in collisions with other smaller vehicles. Colliding with stationary objects ie walls barriers posts, parked cars, they are no safer, and often worse. Also the risk of rollover is higher.

And that was kind of the point that people do only think about their own safety when choosing a car. Your safety on the road is affected by the vehicles everyone else chooses, but they dont consider your safety when choosing them. Imagine if everyone drove tanks, you'd be pretty scared driving round.

It's about time the US had a more sensible policy on taxation of gas. Its the lowest out of every developed economy in the world. Gas costs more than twice as much everywhere in Europe and Japan. Its also taxed higher than the USA in countries where the population are much more spread out like Canada and Australia. Interestingly the developed country with the highest gas prices is Norway, which has a similar population density to the USA, including mountainous areas. This kind of throws out the argument that the USA needs cheap gas because its population is spread out.
