Ebay removes anti-choice memorabilia from website |
|
So... you of course all have heard about the murder of Dr. George Tiller, a surgeon who performed late term abortions who was killed by an anti-choice activist. And more recently, the man on trial for the murder is being supported by people who want to raise money for his defense by selling things on eBay.
Well, eBay just flashed their authority with their own site and yanked all the items that were put up for that purpose.
Cue whining of the activists who want to raise money. The chief cry seems to be "censorship" (nevermind that eBay has its terms of use and policies spelled out in painstaking detail for anyone who cares to read.)
I must admit that eBay has risen in my esteem from this. They could have turned a blind eye, but they didn't, and they followed through with their threats.
Censorship: does not mean what they think it means. Free speech is a "negative" right: It prevents the government from silencing you. But it doesn't guarantee you the right to a soapbox or a megaphone or an audience.
There are a couple of important words there, and one I'd like to emphasize is GOVERNMENT. EBay? Can do whatever the f*ck it wants, as it is not the government; eBay can silence you until the cows come home.

1. ParaTed2k (4591) | 2 months ago | I agree with you 100%, eBay has every right to deny anyone on the basis of its TOS. I do wonder though, do they ban the sell of "pro choice" memorabilia? Do they ban the memorabilia of other killers? In other words, do they use their TOS equally or just when it doesn't fit the agenda of the owners?
Again, I support eBay's rights here, but if they don't enforce their TOS equally, I would question their integrity. (note, this is a question since I don't know if they do one way or the other).

deathspectacular (905) | 2 months ago | Th will ban anybody who states that that is the purpose. They can't know what reasons people are auctioning items off for if they don't state it.

anniepa (9294) | 2 months ago | Ted, this really isn't simply about pro-life or pro-choice memorabilia. You can read more about what was going to be offered in this "fundraiser" here: http://www.kansascity.com... was glorifying people who had committed acts of extreme violence. It even included a manual telling how to make a bomb! I would hope eBay would either allow both or neither pro-choice and pro-life items to be sold on their site and I also would hope they'd ban the memorabilia of ALL killers!

Maggiepie (1642) | 2 months ago | I'm pro-life, & like the overwhelming majority of pro-lifers, I condemn the murder of the abortionist, Tiller--or any other abortion businessman. Murder is murder. Period.
So, in the interest of intellectual honesty & fairness, I went to both the of the links above. In the article first mentioned, eBay states that they won't allow the sale of anything that "glorifies violence." Upon visiting Ted's link, it becomes obvious that their statement is their fig leaf that allows them to remove the auction for the abortionist's murderer. Ted's link shows page after page of products that sensationalize (& thus "glorify") serial killers, all for sale on eBay.
Clearly this IS about a pro-abortion agenda. Ebay has every right to have its agenda, & to keep whomever they wish off their site. I'm just calling them out for the hypocrites that they are.

2. WBtheMP3guy (116) | 2 months ago | Really? I think you might need to read the first amendment again. As for Dr. Tiller, he paid the ultimate price for his sin, and I hope his killer pays the same price. Dr. Tillers' death was a stupid waste. eBay is a far left organization. Not that that matters, really.
As for Freedom of choice, a chick that got pregnant made her choice. She chose to do that thing that could get her pregnant. There is always a concequence for your actions. To remove the concequence condones the action. She ( the women who get pregnant by "accident" I mean), did not have to chose to do that thing which could cause a pregnancy. Besides, there are 11 forms of birth control for women. Only 2 for men. Men have the choice of condoms or vasectomy. Even though I chose to get a vasectomy, I still use a condom. Why? Because there are other concerns besides pregnancy.
So, to sum this all up, Dr. Tiller died, I hope his killer dies, and I'll still be here being me.

WBtheMP3guy (116) | 2 months ago | Actually, you're right. Forgive me, I must have been suffering from a caffene deficiency. As much as I disagree with their actions, by the Constitution, they have the right to do it. eBay, I mean. It's kind of stupid, though, don't you think? They take a cut from every sale, so they just put a dent in their profit margin. I wonder what the stock holders have to say about that. I'm glad I don't own any eBay stock.

3. irishidid (3076) | 2 months ago | As long as bias wasn't in the equation, then good on ebay. Mind you though, I believe these supporters have the right to raise money for the defense of this man. Everyone has the right to be defended whether we think they should be or not. Although in this case I wouldn't have said what the funds were being used for if I had been in their position. Not a smart move on their part.

4. anniepa (9294) | 2 months ago | I was very relieved when I learned that eBay had removed this from their site! Good for them!! I think there should be a stronger word or phrase to describe these people than "anti-choice", though. They were glorifying a cold-blooded murderer who gunned a man down in his own church in front of his family and many friends. They were selling instructions for how to make a homemade bomb.

spalladino (9074) | 2 months ago | Bingo to both of you! You don't see the angry crowds outside of abortion clinics offering to take any of these women into their homes. I've never seen anything that actually supports a woman who is faced with an unplanned pregnancy...just a lot of rhetoric about how wrong she is.
| |
|
|
spalladino (9074) | 2 months ago | Ok, taskr jumped in there before I posted my response so obviously my little "Bingo" belongs to the two responses above his.
As for you, taskr, I get soooo tired of the "inconvenient for the mother" rap. There are MANY situations that women find themselves in that have nothing to do with convenience.
| |
|
|
deathspectacular (905) | 2 months ago | No, Taskr is right. I mean, it's not like women even thought of having abortions before it was made legal. Illegal abortions would be unsafe! So no woman would go to that length because of an "inconvenience". It's not like childbirth is a serious thing that can kill or seriously injusre women, and should be a well though out decision that you should be ready for. Didn't you know that when you give birth you magically get a million dollars to go towards raising it, instead of getting medical bills for the hospital. Oh, how wrong I've been. Darn that Roe vs. Wade and giving women ideas about bodily autonomy and being able to choose when to start a family.

5. maximax8 (10835) | 2 months ago | I am pro-life and wouldn't ever have an abortion. What other ladies wish to do is their own choice. E Bay had the right to remove anything it thinks is unsuitable to sell. Yesterday I was reading through the listings of some items that Children In Need are selling. Most people like to think of disadvantaged children being helped but with abortion strong feelings of for or against go with that topic. Just as My Lot has its rules I am sure E Bay does have rules too.

deathspectacular (905) | 2 months ago | Um, I'm trying to figure out what kind of pro life you are. Bear with me here.
If you think that abortion should be made illegal you are anti choice. If you think that abortion should remain legal you're pro choice. Even if you are against getting an abortion for yourself. That's kind of what the whole choice thing is about.

coolcoder (1623) | 2 months ago | What do you mean when you say "what kind of pro-lifer" someone is? You mean to say there's more than one kind? Please, do inform the rest of us.
I'm pro-life. I support both mother and child. Do you realize that a lot of these women are being forced into having an abortion they don't want, simply because whoever got her pregnant doesn't want the responsibility of being a father? Or perhaps the family of the woman forces her to have an abortion in order to keep their family reputation intact?
It's not enough to keep an unborn baby alive. The mother must be told of other options, such as adoption, and there are many, many places she can go where she will be given what she needs to take care of the baby, i.e., diapers, bottles, clothes, etc. She must be given hope. THAT is what it means to be truly pro-life.
| |
|
|
spalladino (9074) | 2 months ago | Coder, do you have a source to back up your statement that a lot of women are forced into getting abortions or is that just an opinion? Actually, before the procedure is done the woman meets with a counselor who ensures that this is indeed her decision and is something that she wants. That's basic lawsuit protection.
I'm not trying to get on you about your views but the reality is that the decision to end a pregnancy is more complex than getting help with bottles, diapers and clothes. Every woman who is faced with this decision has her own unique circumstance and her own personal reasons. She knows what her options are and has the right to choose. I have found that the hard core Pro-Lifers are actually Pro-Baby and Anti-Choice because they refuse to have any consideration for the needs of the woman.
| |
|
|
Taskr36 (4646) | 2 months ago | That's largely because the woman is an adult who can take care of herself. The child is innocent and defenseless so pro-life people feel it is their need to defend the child. If a woman is struggling with her decision and needs help there are no shortage of pro-life organizations who can help a woman out. Abortion is just an easier, faster way out.
| |
|
|
spalladino (9074) | 2 months ago | Really, taskr? Are there organizations that will support a pregnant woman until she gives birth and is back on her feet if she can't work? Will they provide her with a home if she's forced to leave where she is because she's pregnant? Will they help with the additional expenses she will face for 18 years?
| |
|
|
maximax8 (10835) | 2 months ago | I am pro-life and I wouldn't ever have an abortion. If my life was in danger I would still let my baby be born. If I was raped I would give birth to my baby and adopt him or her. If my baby was disabled I will still give birth to him or her and keep my baby. I was offered an abortion when I was 36 weeks pregnant due to my son having spina bifida and hydrocephalus. He is now a happy little two and a half year old boy.
Abortion can happen for many different reasons and I think it is sad for the innocent little baby. Sometimes a lady can have an abortion and regret it for the rest of her life. Abortion is legal in my home country and can easily be obtained up to 24 weeks pregnancy. Everyone has their own opinion and I can't tell others what to do. I am pro-life and others may be pro-choice so that is up to them.

Maggiepie (1642) | 2 months ago | To dispel the myth that pro-lifers don't care for the mothers, yes we DO help the mothers! There are countless organizations which support the mother & her baby with food, clothing, job-finding, education & other such needs! You just don't know about them because the pro-abort media don't tell people, & the pro-abort industry is dead set against us, & censor us!
Proof? How's this?
I once put up posters which gently told women that if they had a "problem pregnancy" that they could get help so as to be able to give birth, & detailed some of the many services the organizations provided. These listed the phone numbers & addresses of the various organizations around town. No preaching, no "hate," just an offer of sincere help.
About 20 minutes later I was returning by the path I'd taken & saw that most of the posters had been defaced--usually ripped but all with vicious language scrawled on them in big angry letters--& some were ripped down & left in shreds on the ground.
I put more up. Second verse, same as the first.
This happened a couple more times, even though I tried different locations.
See above for results.
Finally I had an idea. I got a permanent marker which could even write on glass, & made a bunch of copies of the poster, each one increasing in size. I went out & found a window in a nearby building which looked only into a darkened basement. I wanted to be sure no-one in the building would take down my poster just because it blocked views, & further, no-one there was likely to notice it while in the basement. I doubted they'd care even if they did.
I wrote a message directly on the glass, & taped my smallest poster over it. Then I taped the next larger poster over that, & continued 'til the largest poster covered everything. I believe there were about 9 posters.
I left, & returned shortly afterward, just to see what, if anything, had happened.
Every poster had been removed, & even the ink had been scratched, though they couldn't get it off. I almost wish I'd had time to stay & see the face(s) of whomever it was that had surely gone ballistic when they got to my pen's note. It read:
"SO...YOU REALLY DON'T BELIEVE IN FREE SPEECH, DO YOU?"
So yes, there ARE plenty pf folks out here that DO care about both the mothers AND their babies. You'll have to ask yourself why you haven't heard of us....

6. coolcoder (1623) | 2 months ago | I hate to burst whatever angry bubble you have about PRO-LIFE people, but the vast majority of us don't believe that the murder of Tiller was right. The guy who killed Tiller is a far, far, far right-wing nutcase. Nevertheless, there is nothing in the law that prevents people from defending this character, crazy though he might be, so I think that what Ebay did could be construed as a form of censorship.

9. Taskr36 (4646) | 2 months ago | Ebay is a private business and can do as they please. If they don't want people using their site to raise funds to defend a murderer, good on them. Ebay bans plenty of things on its site including Nazi memorabilia (which frustrates my father who deals in antiques including a lot of WWII memorabilia).
I'm disgusted however by the way you act as though pro-life people in general support this scumbag. Every major pro-life organization and pro-life leaders throughout the country including Sarah Palin condemned the murder of Tiller. I'm not shedding a tear that the scumbag is dead, but the man who killed him is still a murderer and should face the appropriate penalty for his crimes.
