Gay/Straight... help me understand |
|
Ok, this is not to bring down the ugly on anyone (especially myself), this is just to try to understand the logic and what appears to be a complete double standard... even hypocrisy.
I understand that a gay people are attracted to people of the same sex the same way that straight people are attracted to members of the opposite sex. I understand that being gay doesn't mean a guy will jump on anything with a penis; being a lesbian doesn't mean she will jump on anything with boobs any more than being straight does..
What I don't understand is why it seems ok for gay people to be thrown together with men in situations where women would never be forced to put up with it.
For instance, would you tell your daughter that she's being "insensitive" or "silly" if the school decided that all this "girls" "boys" stuff with the school bathrooms is sexist, and makes them all coed? Would you tell a woman who found a man in the women's bathroom that she's somehow wrong for not wanting him to be there?
Guys, if you worked for a woman, would you put up with her walking into the men's room with you as you talked about business, and stood their next to you while you did yours?
Ok, here's the question...
What's the difference between the above scenarios and if the example of the opposite sex was a gay person of the same sex as you?
That being asked, if the above scenarios happened, but it was someone you knew to be gay/lesbian, shouldn't you have just as much right to be bothered as in the above situation?
Notice I didn't put this under "Politics" because I don't ask with any sort of political agenda or issue in mind. It is under "life" because to me, these are real questions that society seems unwilling to discuss... but all too willing to force on us anyway.

ParaTed2k (4591) | 2 months ago | That's the thing, I didn't start this discussion to call for changes in our public bathroom situation. However, the bathrooms aren't just segregated because of our anatomy, but the interest we have in each others anatomy.
You probably wouldn't care about the sexuality of the woman in the same bathroom as you, but what is the difference between a lesbian looking at you in the bathroom and a man? really, nothing.
| |
|
|
Ravenladyj (18010) | 2 months ago | but what is the difference between a lesbian looking at you in the bathroom and a man?
IMO its not about the sexuality thing..its the threat factor...a man is seen far more as a potential physical threat than a woman is, lesbian or not..
| |
|
|
sid556 (10849) | 2 months ago | I would be bothered by anyone looking at me in the bathroom. Raven does make a very good point. I think I'd feel more threatened if it were a man and mainly because of the physical capabilities.
| |
|
|
ParaTed2k (4591) | 2 months ago | Ravenj: In the case all public bathrooms should be "co-ed" because then they wouldn't be secluded enough for anyone to be a threat to anyone else.

5. cripfemme (5778) | 2 months ago | Personally, I never think about who's peeing in the stall next to me. The only thing I care about is weather said stall is wheelchair accessible, meaning I myself can pee. Most people aren't going to the bathroom to do anything to anyone else in the the restroom. They are mostly only there to pee! Perversion doesn't care what orientation you are!

7. speakeasy (1434) | 2 months ago | The proper thing would be to eliminate the "boy" "girl" signs altogether and just have restrooms with stalls and eliminate the "wall of urinals". That way everyone has privacy to do what they need to do; regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
The "wall of urinals" to me is rather ridiculous anyway. Why would anyone want to be "doing their business" and have someone come up beside them and unzip too? Are you guys having some sort of a competition or comparing notes?
If guys must have a "urinal", put it in a stall where it is private.
Guys talk about women going to the bathroom together; but, guys literally go to the bathroom together!
| |
| |
|
|
ParaTed2k (4591) | 2 months ago | Actually, the "wall of urinals" was originally invented for space, speed and convenience. You can fit a lot more urinals in the same space as whole toilet stalls and if guys only need to pee, why do we need a whole stall?
There is also the "trough" urinals that are quite literally what you are talking about.;~D

ParaTed2k (4591) | 1 month ago | so if you found out that a guy dressed up like a girl to get away with being in the women's bathroom while you were in there, that wouldn't bother you at all?
| |
|
|
speakeasy (1434) | 1 month ago | No, it wouldn't because I would be using a "stall" which is "private".
Maybe, it is because I have been to foreign countries. Some of them only have a single restroom that is used by all sexes and they have stalls. It is not uncommon to have a man in one stall and a woman in the next. It is not a big deal. Some people are just so prudish about taking care of "nature calls". All you need is a little privacy to do your business. No need to make a big production about it or worry about what someone else is doing.

ParaTed2k (4591) | 1 month ago | Ok, so if there was a guy in the bathroom with your little sister, you would tell her that he probably isn't even interested in her and she should just get over herself.

II2aTee (797) | 1 month ago | Well if a man was in the womans rest room he is either confussed or a pervert and needs to have charges pressed agaisnt him.
If my sister was in the same bathroom as a lesbian, and she was afraid that lesbian was checking her out, yes, depending on the details, I probably would tell her to get over herself. Especially if said lesbian was just doing her business like any other woman who needs to use the restroom.
| |
|
|
ParaTed2k (4591) | 1 month ago | So you don't care what anyone else thinks, as long as you can feel comfortable.
Bah!
You, my friend, don't give a crap about anyone but your pathetic little self.
| |
|
|
II2aTee (797) | 1 month ago | Im sorry you feel that way, but luckily it has no impact on the reality of the kind of person I am. I care about what matters. What some straight guy is afraid I might do to him if I catch him alone in the bathroom ranks very low on my priority list.
If I need to use the restroom, I'll do so, regardless of who else is there atthe time, as long as there is a sign that says male on the door. If someone is insecure with thier own sexuality enough to feel threatened by that, I have nothing but pity for them. Thats no way to live your life.

|
ParaTed2k (4591) | 1 month ago | It was uncalled for.
Society does need to talk about the impact things have on idividuals though. Simply saying it's our problem only leads to more problems.
Thanks for a great discussion!

9. rjl1989 (143) | 1 month ago | Maybe if all restrooms/toilets were for both sexes and urinals were done away with, we'd all be used to it as it would be normal and we'd have done it since we were kids, so nobody would be bothered about it.
I think some of the separation of the sexes gets conditioned into us as children, and never really goes away.
Along with the stereotypical roles and personalities girls and boys get conditioned into them as children. From toys to clothes, to sports/hobbies to differing attitudes and standards/expectations to career choices and expectations. People complain about the gender pay gap, but until most jobs/degrees/school subjects are roughly 50/50 between men and women, and staying at home with the kids is roughly 50/50, there will always be a difference in pay.
| |
| |
|
|
ParaTed2k (4591) | 1 month ago | Maybe we should just forget there are differences and treat anyone who considers the differences signifcant as if they are just idiots.;~D
I do agree with much of what you said, but do you really think gender differences go no further than what's between our legs?
