Have You Ever Paid For A Course Then Quit? |
|
Most of us have gone to or thought about learning something new to enrich our lives, and going to college as a mature student does help us learn new things, if it's a course we have fancied or something new to try out?
I guess starting new courses are like new years resolutions they sound all well and good and you are up for it at the start, full of enthusiasm, but when you've paid for the course and have gone a long to a few lessons the novelty has suddenly evaporated in seconds literally
But if you have paid out for x amount of lessons and you find that the course is not for you, you find it incredibly boring, you find the people on the course difficult or unfriendly or you can't get on with the tutor or for what ever other reason would you quit? Or would you carry on until you've finished the course because you've paid out for the course?
Would you still go along to the course knowing that you had paid even though you find it boring, dread going or hate it to the extent you'd rather watch paint dry?
Or do you put it down to experience? Sure you've paid out and it's cost a fair bit, but at least you have tried it.
I have paid out for a course which I wanted to try out, it's a 12 week course finishing in December, I have gone along for three sessions and it's not for me, I don't enjoy it, find it boring and I have so far missed another three sessions, so I have six sessions left. I won't get my money back, it's not the first time I've wasted money and probably won't be the last.
But the way I look at it, I hope you agree, I tried it, didn't like it, it's not me and I don't get anything out of it, so to continue going just for the sake that I have paid for the lessons seems to me a waste of time, more than money.
Would you quit a course if you have paid for it or would you carry on?

1. fjaril (4616) | 2 months ago | wolfie.. if it isn't for you and you have made up your mind, and I believe you HAVE, then is there any hope you will like it next time you should be there?
I don't think so. You made your mind up already. Let it go then.. There must be a better way to find a decent course that will help you meet your goals.. Obviously you are losing money and your mistake is costing you.
Would I quit?? That is very individual. I have taken a ton of course in my time and at least 'tolerated' them all, and even loved some of them.. The rest were okej and beneficial to me to reach goals...
HOWEVER,, I was once in a course that I had to actually compete to get into because of the number of applicants. We therefore ALL had to complete a written aptitude and IQ test while we were crowded into 3 rooms and of the 110 people who applied for that course, only 35 were chosen.. yeah .. so what,,I was one of them.. BUT..I couldn't stand the people in my class.. talky, show off, better than thou attitudes, and no manners, and well, I ended up after 3 weeks pardoning my self from class. I thought I would rather be with normal adults than with those who think they are better than others..
So you are not alone.. one learns from such experiences, wolfie, doesn't one?

wolfie34 (13930) | 2 months ago | This is true my friend and the way I look at it is that I have absolutely no regrets, I sign up, I tried it, gave it a fair try, didn't like it, end of, move on... If I hadn't of taken the course I would always be left wondering what if....? Now I know, not for me, move on to something that is!

2. nannacroc (2370) | 2 months ago | If you hate the course as much as you seem to then just quit and put it down to experience. I have never quit any course I signed up for but that is because I'm stubborn and because I hate wasting money. I did take a Game Boy along to one course because it was mind numbingly boring and I seemed to be the only one who didn't need everything repeating at least three times. I spent most of the time playing and still got the certificate at the end. Take care.

wolfie34 (13930) | 2 months ago | I do think time is just as valuable, sometimes more so than money. One lesson which I missed I spent the time relaxing in a health spa instead and I felt more revitalized after the health spa than sitting in a classroom bored out of my skull for two hours!

wolfie34 (13930) | 2 months ago | Fortunately I have found something else to occupy me and keep my mind active and that is self defence classes, I think you have to try things out otherwise how do you ever know? Isn't it better to try and accept it's not for you than always be left wondering what if? Sometimes work, somethings don't but unless you try you'll never know!

cloudwatcher (3491) | 2 months ago | Very true wolfie. How are the art lessons coming? Have you done more?
| |
|
|
wolfie34 (13930) | 2 months ago | Sorry I should have said in my discussion it's the art course I have abandoned my dear friend, my stubbornness has kicked in and I intend to complete the last 3 lessons at pyschology because I enjoy the subject but certainly not the other members of the class.
| |
|
|
cloudwatcher (3491) | 2 months ago | I'm disappointed it was the art course - but that is me. I am very keen on art and design, and very interested in psychology, so I thought it would be another course, other than those. Even though you are not doing the course, you could still continue to dabble in art. I never did an art course, but learned from experience. I was offered free art lessons from an expert, while still at school, but my mother "could not afford" to supply the paper and pencils (even though she went on a world trip the following year). If art interests you, keep going by yourself. You don't need a course to develop a talent.

wolfie34 (13930) | 2 months ago | My heart is not in it at all to be honest, even in college or out. I have just started a drama group today and I thoroughly enjoyed it, as well as my new self defence classes so I am really busy which I need right now. At least I can see I tried it, I am motivating myself more instead of spending all my time in front of the computer!
| |
|
|
cloudwatcher (3491) | 2 months ago | A drama group! Well, that is a good step and will get you mixing with people - a surprising choice for a petunia-type, but I suppose in a drama group you can express yourself as not yourself, so that should be good.

wolfie34 (13930) | 2 months ago | There was only five of us that turned up, including the two moderators, but I thoroughly enjoyed it, I forgot my problems for two hours and I was interactive and I guess it's like anything you get out what you put in. I was very pleased with what I achieved and I will definitely make it a regular thing! Now I have set myself a challenge for tomorrow to break the ice with the women on my psychology course. I am getting there, slowly!

8. Opal26 (10118) | 2 months ago | Hey my dearest brother! Of course I would do exactly what you are doing! I don't give a damn what I paid for the class! If I really don't like it and it's not for me and I'm going to be totally miserable and get nothing out of it then what's the point? You tried it, you didn't like it so what else is there to do? I have no problem quitting stuff I don't like and since you ARE MY BROTHER what else would you expect me to say to you? You at least TRIED IT!!! You get an "A" in my book just for trying! They get to keep YOUR MONEY so what the phuck! I am very proud of you for taking the risk because I know how difficult that was for you so don't beat yourself up about it and just be happy that you tried something else new! Yeah Wolfie! I still love you! Your loving sis, Opal

Opal26 (10118) | 2 months ago | Yes, you are my dear bro and I wish you would send some of that positive motivation to your sis! I am drowning here in the pool of negativity and self worthlessness! I have lost my medical coverage for now and hence my therapist and all my docs so I am not doing well at all! I haven't been sleeping and am a total basket case myself! If there isn't a way found for the med coverage to be paid by this lousy State I live in I don't know what will happen to your poor ole sis! Pray for me my sweet bro-Howl at the moon if you think it will help! I love you, Leslie/Opal/Sis

9. thezone (2137) | 2 months ago | Hi Wolfie,
I have completed many courses over the years and stuck all of them out except one. It was a course that relied heavily on a lot of maths work. Numbers was never my strong point so I realised it was not for me so I quit it.
You are right if it is something you are not enjoying and fine boring best thing is to give it a miss.
| |
| |
|
|
wolfie34 (13930) | 2 months ago | I love number work, I love maths, we are all different, what suits one will not suit another, that is why we have to try these things, we can't enjoy everything can we, and the only way if we know if we like something is to try it out!
