MYLOT ALERT as of November 3, 2009 |
|
It has come to our attention that certain users have been trying to scam fellow myLot users through the myLot tasks system. These users have been asking for money through paypal and promising money in return. Tasks of this nature are nearly always going to be a scam and you should avoid them. If you feel you have been a victim of a task of this nature we ask that you report the individual to paypal. You can do this by logging into your paypal account and finding the payment in question. Click on details then click on resolution center. Once here you can file a complaint against that user and hopefully get a refund of your money.
Once again, please think twice about any task where you are asked to send someone money. If a task seems to good to be true it probably is.
COMMENT:
I hope mylot tasks should check any submitted tasks to them. It might ruin the reputation of MYLOT, lose of members, and earnings of individual members of mylot. I hope ADMIN should be strict in approving SUBMITTED TASKS..

I saw that the other day and was wondering why they'd offer $10 in Task Money for sending them $5 on Paypal. Wouldn't they just be able to cash out if they wanted paypal money? I'm really glad that at least myLot noticed it. Some other companies just ignore it or don't notice. This at least means that myLot is active:]

owlwings (5232) | 2 months ago | I believe that the actual payment for the task was minimal ... perhaps 10 cents or something like that.
I think that, sadly, it only came to MyLot's attention because of complaints from dissatisfied users. MyLot, I believe, should be far more proactive in approving the tasks before they are posted instead of waiting for users to report them or to discover that they have been scammed.

3. thinkingoutloud (2450) | 2 months ago | myLot has already indemnified themselves against this in the Terms of Use Agreement. It states that:
"myLot is not involved in the transactions between Taskers and Workers. As a result, myLot has no control over the quality, safety or legality of the services or the ability of the Workers to provide the services to the Tasker’s satisfaction. myLot is not responsible for the actions of any myLot member. myLot does not conduct any screening or other verification with respect to myLot members, nor do we provide any recommendations."
Basically, just like anywhere else online, we are responsible for ourselves in terms of evaluating what we do and don't do. The tasks area is open here as a place of access and exchange between task creators and what amounts to a freelance workforce. We only accept tasks if we wish, we are not obligated to do so.

owlwings (5232) | 2 months ago | The clause you quote is, of course, only what any sensible provider must say. It has no bearing, however, on MyLot's moral responsibility (both to itself as a reputable site and to its members) to ensure that, to the best of it's ability, the tasks posted are, in fact, legal and safe. There are guidelines that a task setter should observe but to what extent these are seen to be observed by MyLot (either before the task is posted or afterwards) is open to question.
Most other reputable sites DO screen tasks to the best of their ability before they are accepted for posting. That doesn't mean to say, of course, that workers can be assured that task creators will not be dishonest or vice versa. As you say, we are, in the end, responsible to ourselves for what we do (both online and offline).
It struck me, however, that the Alert made no mention of MyLot's mistake in allowing such blatantly obvious scams to be posted as tasks.

thinkingoutloud (2450) | 2 months ago | Oh, don't get me wrong, I have no doubt that there can be a sense of moral responsibility involved. I don't disagree with that at all. Obviously, too, there will be folks who never read the Terms of Use or other supplied information and will make the assumption that myLot controls the tasks that are posted by "other than myLot admin" task creators. I'm sure that will cause confusion, in some cases, and the "legalities", if you will, would not be understood until questioned. However, as a business, myLot has made a decision about where they stand with the tasks area and they have made sure to stipulate what they will and won't be responsible for... beyond that, we might wish or believe that they should be more involved or pro-active but it doesn't seem that it's in the plan to do that. It's like the example given here about going to a shopping mall and having the ceiling fall in... the mall would have insurance for that and that would be the limit of their responsibility in its most black and white sense - the Terms of Use Agreement and such information here is the equivalent of that insurance policy.

5. hornetlover (2604) | 2 months ago | I read the alert, just when I logged in this afternoon. It does not bother me, for myself alone. I never take any tasks. I just don't feel like it. I am lazy, LOL. But, it is so nice of myLot that they informed us about it, so we are going to be aware, at least...

6. ronnyb (2699) | 2 months ago | I couldnt agree with you more that Mylot should check teh tasks which are submitted before approving and if they represent the first line of defence for us then we will be protected against some of tehse scammers .That said however it cannot be overemphasized that there are so many scammers out there and we need to be extra vigilant .I cant believe that scam still works,I mean that there are so many reports about actions like that and how many persons have been scammed and people are still falling prey to that .Thanks though for bring it to our attention

7. Rite17 (141) | 2 months ago | I am upset that people would drag a good site down to gain extra money instead of enjoying the whole experience and be genuine!! It sickens me!! Shame that it has to coem down to a few people doing it to make the whole experience and reputation disgustingly soiled!!
I have not seen this myself and have not fallen for anything like that... But will warn others to watch out for them and keep WELL away!!:-)
