My sister gave me a 2-month old female puppy. Actually, I really asked for it coz I want to have another dog in the house. I want her inside the house since our other dog is a pitbull. She's so big and we just keep her in a cage outside. The puppy is a crossbreed of japanese spitz and a shih tzu. Her features are more of a shih tzu. She's really so cute and adorable.I named her slurpee. Now, here comes my problem. I've been teaching her for more than two weeks now where to pee and move her bowel but up to this time she's still not learning. She pees and moves her bowel anywhere she pleases. I would let her sniff her urine and stool and spank and scold her and then I place her in the comfort room where I want her to do all those things but up to now she still never understands a thing. Am I being harsh on her? Can a young puppy like her can't be taught yet? Pls. help! I'm beginning to lose my patience. HuHuHu

hi santos, it is a great fun to raize a puppy, but it is not easy to teach her what she should do, what do not. it should take time to do so, but some puppy really will not learn it well no matter how long you took to teach her, i do not know whether your slurpee is in this situation or not. as you like her, i think you should take more time to teacher her till she learn well.

santos_mlirs (50)   ranked 955 out of 9,679 in dogs  4 weeks ago

Yes I agree with you. Maybe I should give her more time until she understands what I am teaching her. Thanks for your advice. Have a great night ahead!

I believe that puppies are much like toddlers in the aspect that they also love rewards, affection, and attention. The require a lot of TLC, and discipline. It takes a long time to teach a puppy as they learn hands on since they can't speak and it is still un-known if they understand voice commands, aside from using 1 word with hand signals.I think you will do fine, and so will the puppy. It's just a bump in the road.

Yes, that's very true. Thanks.

santos First of all, if you don't correct a dog or puppy the second the wrong doing happens than forget it. For you to push her nose in it and scold her after the fact is a complete waste of time because she does not understand why you are yelling at her. The key to potty training is a regimented schedule..You must feed her at the same times every day so that you know when she is going to eliminate. pups should be walked on the leash every hour on the hour and when she goes to the bathroom outside, praise the hell out of her..She will catch on quickly. Puppies take a lot of patience and commitment on your part. If you don't have the time than prehaps a puppy is not a good idea for you. I cant emphasize enough how important a schedule of feeding is.. Think of it..If you ate all day long and at different times, would you know when you were going to have to use the "comfort room"? also, putting her in their is also a bad idea because you are teaching her that it is ok to emiminate in the house..Take her out!!! every hour if you can and after she eats, straignt away!! Please dont yell at her after the fact because she just wont get it and you'll fustrate yourself and confuse her. Yes puppies can be taught and are every day..It just takes a little know how. Even though they are young, they learn very fast and praise is the key as they love to make you happy..I worked for a dog trainer for a few years while I was in college and if I can help you in any way I'm happy to do so..Good luck SCHEDULE and WALKS!!!

I have a daughter who is already married and doesn't live with me anymore. She also has a puppy who used to be the same age as my puppy. Actually her puppy is the older sister of my puppy. Last May of this year, my daughter and her family went on a one-week vacation. She had left her puppy with me while they were away. To tell you honestly, I successly trained that puppy to pee and poo at the comfort room for just five days only!I had used the same strategy in teaching her and that proved to be effective. Sorry, but I really don't have time anymore to take her out. What more if it's for every hour as you were suggesting. Now, that puppy is already 10 months old and she can roam around the house as much as she wants to. She can even go inside our bedroom coz she's already so disciplined. We don't take her out for a walk each day but we take her with us in going to the mall or wherever whenever possible.

To top it all, maybe puppies or any other animal also have different levels of learning abilities. Some learn easily and some are slow learners. So in my case, I will be needing a great deal of patience, I suppose. Thanks for responding and sharing your views.

santos I have one more thing..Why are you keeping a pitbull in a cage? I hope he gets out for walks and exercise..If you dont have the room for such a big dog than maybe you should find a more suitable home for him..Its not fair to keep him caged. You'll end up with an angry dog that could really become a problem. That breed is very high strung and needs a certain kind of care...definately not a cage..I'm not criticizing you, just trying to help J

santos_mlirs (50)   ranked 955 out of 9,679 in dogs  4 weeks ago

Here in our country, the cage acts as dog's house too. It protects them from the rain and the scorching sun. My daughter used to take her for walks everyday when she was younger but not now anymore. She had grown bigger and my daughter can't handle her anymore when she tries to run. So for security reasons, my daughter already stopped doing that. Still, we never stopped loving and caring for her. I know she feels it too.

I never had puppy, but just recently my Husband rescued a puppy from our neighbour, I think the kids picked up this puppy somewhere in the street, but their parents refuse to have him, so they dumped him back in the street. Thankfully my Husband sees them and ask the kids if we could have the puppy and they agree, they were surprised at first, lol! We are living in apartment building and we don't have garden or front yard for him to stay, so the only chance we've got is to train him to wee and poo on the paper and it also because he is too young to take him outside to poo. Thankfully he is now learning to go on the paper every time he needs to wee or poo, but I still keep my eyes on him. We are not sure how old is he, but the way he looks, my Husband and his friend says that he must be 6 weeks old. Maybe just have more patience with Slurpee and hopefully in time she'll learn where to go and whenever you see her wee on the place where she needs to, say her few times that she's a good girl, it might help. And one thing, if you clean the place where she wee and poo and you don't like her to go there again, try to clean it with disinfectant or chlorine, so she can't smell her wee and poo there. I'm sorry, but I don't know much of how to raise puppy and what I'm saying here is just based on a week experienced. happy

santos_mlirs (50)   ranked 955 out of 9,679 in dogs  4 weeks ago

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me. I really appreciate it very much. I think I will just have to continue to be patient with her and I know in due time she will eventually learn where to wee and poo. Have a nice day!

When I was young, I had one puppy. It always ran following me and brought back my shoes in its mouth. I did not spend too much time to teach it. i.e. when it was hungry, I always threw one shoe and let it bring the shoe back to me before I gave it food. I think this is a kind of motivation. May be you can try this way. Good luck.

santos_mlirs (50)   ranked 955 out of 9,679 in dogs  4 weeks ago

Thank you very much for your advice. It's indeed a good motivation. Thank you for sharing it with me and also by wishing me good luck. Have a great day!

trainning a dog entails a lot of patience. It would also take time for the dog to be train just have more patience because it is worth it. dogs are good pets.

santos_mlirs (50)   ranked 955 out of 9,679 in dogs  4 weeks ago

Yes I do agree with you. Dogs are really good pets. It's a man's bestfriend as they all say. All you need to do is to train them very well and show them love, care, and attention. I think my patience just needs a lot more stretching. Thanks a lot!

Any dog that I've raised, I have trained to let me know when they need to go outside. I have never trained a dog to go in a certain spot in the house. It is a lot of work and requires a lot of patience I know.

hi santos__mlirs she is only two months old so it is going to take time and much patience. she can be trained,if she pees and poos where you don't want her to,you must scold her immediately otherwise she will not associate your upset with what she did, and on no not in the bathroom, thats not a good place, try a utility room and keep newspaper down and try to make her associate the newpaper with having to go to the bathroom, try a litle while after she eats and every time she goes on the newspaper praise her like everything. it will take some time as she is very young but she will be trainable. dont use the comfort room as you call it as that might turn out to be a disaster.

santos_mlirs (50)   ranked 955 out of 9,679 in dogs  4 weeks ago

As much as I want to heed your advice, our house is just small and I can't think of anywhere else appropriate for her to pee and poo. The comfort room for me is the best place I can think of since I really don't have time to walk her outside just to do that. As for your other advice I am already starting to do that. Thanks very much. Have a great day ahead!

lol So you make your puppy smell her pee and poo poo! I use to do that with my dog too when she was the same age as your slurpee... I made her smell her pee and poo and then bring her inside the rest room... sometimes I left her inside for a couple of minutes. I talked loudly to her and exaggerated my facial expression so that she will understand that I am upset with what she did. I believe that is effective.

You just have to give her more time and patience because you are dealing with an immature young puppy. She will soon learn.

PS:
Don't forget to praise and reward your puppy on her first poo and pee inside the rest room.

PSS:
Your puppy has a nice and cute name! Who named her? happy

She is my dog! Isn't she cute santos_mlirs?!? It is such a good feeling when you successfully trained your puppy. Have a nice and enjoyful training.

santos_mlirs (50)   ranked 955 out of 9,679 in dogs  4 weeks ago

Glad to know that we have the same technique in training dogs. Yes, I know for a fact that it is effective. Maybe you are right, my slurpee is just stubborn and still immature because of her young age. I'm sure that she will eventually learn in due time. To answer your question as to who gave that name to my puppy, well it's my cute and beautiful daughter who suggested it. It sounded nice so I heeded to her advice. Have a nice day ahead!

santos_mlirs (50)   ranked 955 out of 9,679 in dogs  4 weeks ago

Indeed, you have a cute and wonderful dog there in that picture. She also looks smart to me by the way she stands. You did quite an impressing training to her. Maybe I need to congratulate you for a job well done!

myLot reputation of 98/100. lovelyn_medrano (641)  4 weeks ago

Slurpee is indeed a cool name! happy I guess you need to treat your daughter out also when you have successfully trained your dog, slurpee.

myLot reputation of 98/100. lovelyn_medrano (641)  4 weeks ago

Thank you santos_mlirs! It took a lot of patience and love. Yes she is really smart but like other dogs, she is also naughty and playful sometimes...

santos_mlirs (50)   ranked 955 out of 9,679 in dogs  4 weeks ago

Haha! Your kidding me. You're telling me to treat my daughter by suggesting a name for my puppy? If she's going to help me in training her maybe I'l do that. hehe.Good day!

yes, you are. you wanted that puppy so you better have patient. pets are like our child. you will never be a good parent if you are like that in your pets. they were the one who will also teach us how to be a good parent. what you will do since i also have pets in the house i have 3 cats and they were all trained on where to pee or poo. i have a bath tub the one that babie's use. i bought small one and put newspaper on it. they know how to use it they always went there to do their things. i only have to check it often cause cats are very clean they dont want to use it if its dirty already. do the same with your dog
