Why does it take an ailment for many to start getting health conscious? |
|
Perhaps when we are young and carefree, we think we are invincible and nothing can happen to us. We eat and do what we want - and not really think much about the consequences. But down the road the doctor will tell us that our cholesterol or triglyceride levels are too high, that we're pre-diabetic, overweight, or come down with a serious ailment that could have possibly been prevented.
Why do many people literally need to hit a low peak with their health before they start doing something about it? Why aren't more people eating healthy and exercising their entire lives?

1. bounce58 (1067) | 2 months ago | I'll offer up the most common excuse. It seems everybody is so wrapped up with all the little things in life that they can't seem to find time to focus on their health. As an example, I know how it is be health conscious as I was once when I was young. Recently, I have been in such a rut, fighting fires daily that I don't seem to have time for anything, less excercise to be healthy. I don't even have time to worry about it. Someday though... I will start to live healthy (or if I hit a low peak, whichever comes first).

2. dorannmwin (2320) | 2 months ago | I beleive that the main reason is that we think that while we are young, nothing bad can happen to us. As for me, this has never been the case though. My grandfather whom I never met died at the age of 56 from a massive heart attack and then my father passed away at 42 also from a massive heart attack. I've always been conscious of my health and especially my heart health. I try to make sure that our family doesn't eat a lot of junk food and I do have my levels tested when I have physicals as well. I know that I am not invincible and I want to be here for as long as possible to share life with my children and grandchildren.

much2say (698) | 2 months ago | Yah, I think a lot of people think nothing bad can happen to them, particularly if they seem healthy at the moment. Wow - your grandfather and father passed away so young .. . I can imagine how very conscious you are about the importance of heart health. Yes, if we watch ourselves now, in the long run we'll hopefully be healthy enough to enjoy life "later on". I would love to be able to "play" with my grandchildren!

much2say (698) | 2 months ago | It is funny the way people think, eh? That swine flu deal - eek. On that issue, it really bugs me that some people who are sick don't care about the rest of the public . . . they need to stay home and not spread it around! We sure can't demand cures because even the medical world doesn't know everything . . . but surely we can help ourselves and be as healthy as possible.

4. hotsummer (2756) | 2 months ago | yeah it seems all natural for us to give attention to what is bothering us when it is already bothering a lot and sometimes for other people when it is almost impossible to do something about it. it is quite sad that some people take their disease or what they are feeling lightly. it is important that we should consult doctor or deal with the problem as early as possible to make sure that the disease will be treated before it is too late . by this we will save our selves more troubles and expenses in long run.

much2say (698) | 2 months ago | Yes, many people don't do much for their health unless it totally hurts - and by that time sometimes things are beyond repair. It's also scary that there are no symptoms for some ailments, so even the healthiest don't even know that they are unhealthy. My boss was like that - he found out he had some type of liver cancer - and passed away 3 years later. It is important to see a doctor to get a check up at least every year . . . yes, catching things early is so important.

5. ShepherdSpy (2505) | 2 months ago | There's so many possible illnesses out there, that if You started over analysing the probability of you getting something, you'd have yet another problem to deal with-Hypochondria! If there is a condition with a genetic basis that's known to run in your family,Your doctor could advise you on how to minimise the risks of developing it..Eating Healthy and taking exercise are excellent recommendations to keep your body in reasonable or good shape, but job (or lack of one) and lifestyle choices has turned some into Junk food eating couch potatoes who'd rather veg in front of a TV or computer game rather than go out for a walk or cycle..it can take a lot to pull out of that sort of a dive into ill health..There was a news article on "Britain's fattest Man" in the papers recently who was going into hospital for an operation to curb his weight..His healthcare is currently costing the health service £100,000 a Year, and they needed a specially adapted ambulance to transport him..You don't know if people in this state got there as a result of a medical condition that caused massive weight gain, but the ability for one person to consume a family sized dinner that would feed 4 in one sitting should be a warning signal something's not right..

much2say (698) | 2 months ago | I've know a few hypochondriacs . . . oh yes, that's a totally 'nother issue! Many people have conditions that run in the family, but it seems many don't do much about it til the symptoms arise. Eating healthier and exercising seem like the logical to thing for everyone to do, but often people neglect doing so . . .thinking they can always do it tomorrow. People do what's convenient more than what's better for them. Obesity is a big issue . . . but when it comes to someone who is extremely obese, I just don't understand how it got so out of hand! Yes, when one is eating that much, that is a total red flag!!

6. muscles4me (9118) | 2 months ago | Many people are too lazy to exercise and many people think that just because they have a physically demanding job they do not have to exercise BUT that is not true because work is NOT exercise.

much2say (698) | 2 months ago | Laziness - that is true! Those physically demanding jobs . . . they may get some exercise in some sense, but not necessarily in ways that would be beneficial for them (like cardio). My dad works outdoors, and he is always saying he does not need exercise because his work is exercise. Granted he is thin and mostly healthy, he still gets muscles pulls and aches or gets sick here and there. I don't think my dad is lazy, but I think he doesn't get full exercise.

| 7. luigimanzanares (50) | 2 months ago | Life today is fast-paced. There is just so much to juggle in the family, at work, that it undermines our desire or capacity to strike a balance. When people get sick, they get a physiological feedback and that's the only time they realize that life is not only about focus and priority, it has to be about balance. People think that because they don't feel anything bad that their bodies are okay.

much2say (698) | 2 months ago | It is unfortunate that life is so fast paced these days that many of us neglect our health. Everything else seem to come first. That's it - more people need balance in their lives - but it seems they don't know how. It's frightening how many ailments don't show any symptoms . . . and by the time it hurts some part of the body, it's often irreversible.

much2say (698) | 2 months ago | Unfortunately, some parents do not know how to lead healthier lifestyles, so most likely their children won't either. I can't believe how many little, little ones eat chips and soda . . . I've even seen a toddler be given Red Bull! People are all for convenience these days . . . it's easier to go to a fast food restaurant than to prepare a nice healthy meal at home.
