What do you do with all of your child's artwork? email this discussion to a friend?

My little one is 4-1/2 and a budding artist!! We have tons and tons (did I mention tons) of drawings, paintings, arts/crafts . . . from home, school, events, and wherever else. We hang many of them and have a shelf of her stuff . . . but it's seriously getting overloaded. For now we store much of it in a plastic crate - but it's getting filled fast - and there's only so many plastic crates we can have! Everyone tells me I can't keep EVERYTHING she makes . . . true, but I feel so guilty just throwing it out.

How do you all deal with storing your child's artwork?

I use to be an over zealous mother and kept all their art work but, as the began growing older I weed them out and kept only the very special personalized ones. When they move out and have their own place I'll frame a couple a nd give to them.

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (651)   ranked 136 out of 6,530 in mother  1 month ago

That sounds like me, keeping ALL the art work. We're having a second one soon, and in a couple years, there's just no way I'm going to be able to keep both my children's stuff!! It's so hard for me to weed out the special ones . . . I love all of my daughter's work . .. but I know I'll have to. I used to work in a frame shop and I met a mom who saved her son's 1st grade work on what being married is (picture and words). The mom saved it all these years and was framing it for her son's wedding gift! happy

One suggestion that I've heard people use is to get an unused pizza box for each year and keep the important stuff in that, and that is all that you keep for each year. I actually used one of my brother's shoe boxes last year to limit how much stuff I kept from my daughter because it held more. Then, when the year is over label it with that year and move on to the next one.

Another thing that I've done to save space is to take digital pictures of the kids with their art work. Then we will hang the art on the fridge for a while. Once it is time to remove that piece of art, I then make the decision to either keep or discard of that piece of art not feeling bad because it's been displayed for a while and I have a picture of that piece of art.

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (651)   ranked 136 out of 6,530 in mother  1 month ago

Goodness, our pizza box quota for the year would have be met in one week! lol But that sounds like a good idea, especially if you can get the same pizza boxes each year and store them away neatly. Taking digital pictures of all the artwork sounds like the best idea. The memories are all there - and it can be stored on a CD. Um, looks like now I have a project of taking a zillion photos! Still I feel guilty for throwing out any of her stuff (the pack rat that I am!). lol

We suffer from the same fate. I have a nine year old who's racked up quite a bit of artwork. We started putting them in those stackable cardboard boxes which we store in the garage. Initially, our thinking was, when he is a little bit older, we would let him pick and choose which ones he really likes, and discard the other ones.
But now, I am leaning into putting them in digital pictures just like what dorannmwin suggests. Now if only we could find the time to do all of this... whistle

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (651)   ranked 136 out of 6,530 in mother  1 month ago

Oh, at nine years old I'm sure a lot of artwork has been accumulated!! For us, as it is, there's just no way we can even save everything in neat boxes . . . there is so much stuff and we just don't have the room. But yah, as dorannmwin suggested, I think digital photos are the going to save the day. However, like you said, I don't know when I'll have the time to do this!! happy

After running out of places to put stuff you have to just get over it and learn to throw some things away!! I'm sure my kids would be upset if they knew I didn't keep everything so I do it after they go to bed. I do keep alot from through out the year and at the end of the year I bundle it all together and lable it with the year and all. Then I stick it in my hope chest!

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (651)   ranked 136 out of 6,530 in mother  1 month ago

Hee hee - we are filled to the brim with my daughter's artwork . . . I just don't have the heart to throw any of them out (yet). It'd be hard to throw out her current stuff because she looks at them again and again. But I suppose I could start with the ones that are already stored - the ones she hasn't seen in a long time. It'd definitely have to happen when she's gone to bed! I think my mom just kept the mother's day stuff in her "hope" drawer!

Hi dear!
It is heartening to know that your little one is a budding artist. Our blessings and love to him and may he progress more and more in his life. You need to keep his work selectively. It is true that our houses may not have ample space to keep tons and tons of paintings or sheets. Moreover, keeping bulk of paintings/papers/crates will also require higher and constant maintenance, so it would be better to sort out those paintings, which are really outstanding and worth keeping for a long time

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (651)   ranked 136 out of 6,530 in mother  1 month ago

Oh yes, we definitely do not have much space in our place to possibly keep everything she creates . . . afterall this is a living space, and not a gallery - hee hee. It's so hard to select the "best" works. My husband and I are both artists ourselves, so we are thrilled our little one has also become one herself . . . so all her works mean something big to us. But yes, it would take a lot of maintenance to keep everything. We are biased as parents as we think all of them are outstanding and worth keeping - hee hee.

myLot reputation of 92/100. dpk262006 (8876)   ranked 741 out of 6,530 in mother  1 month ago

Hi dear!
It is good to know that you and your husband are good artists. I would say that either you enlarge your space for keeping paintings/work of your little one or make the selection for his best work, without getting biased..............LOL!
All the best.

Hee hee - if only it were possible to build a bigger living space out of all the artwork . . . how is that for recycling too? lol

I keep them in a safe place, but I don't keep the ones that he's ripped, I tend to keep the ones that he's done his best on ( instaed of just scribbling, I know that sounds harsh but my son is 8 and when he wants he can make some beautiful stuff) Some I give to my mother the rest I hate to say I recycle.

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (651)   ranked 136 out of 6,530 in mother  1 month ago

At 8, it's probably easier to distinguish the "better" pieces of art . . . but my little one is 4 and you just know all of it is just so sentimental to us. But it'd be insane to keep everything. That's a good idea to give some of them family members. And yes, when the time comes to throw out, recycling would be a good idea.

Hi Much2say,
believe it or not I have two daughters, 34 and 19...I have every single thing they ever made from grade school to High School!! Call me Old if you wish but that's me, I sometimes go and look at them and they are rather nice memories!! I keep them in small suitcases and in plastic envelopes:-)
And for those who tell you that you can't keep everything, umm YES you can!!
~G~

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (651)   ranked 136 out of 6,530 in mother  1 month ago

That's 2 big wowsers - having "kids" that are 34 and 19 . . . and that you kept everything!! How did you do it? I'll bet that's a lot of suitcases and envelopes!! We just simply do not have the room for it . . . no matter how I look at it. And we're talking about a little girl who makes lots of and lots of things daily! That's amazing you kept all their stuff . . . how fun to look at them now though, eh?

I think a great way to get rid of the stuff, yet know that it is going to a good use, is to purchase frames, and frame your child's art. You could frame them and give them to neighbors, family members, family friends, the child's friends for birthdays, christmas, anything!

Thank you don't feel so guilty about getting rid of it!

The Thrift store is a great place to get CHEAP frames. Just pop out the old picture, and put in your child's picture.

You can't save everything!

By "thank you" I meant "than you".

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (651)   ranked 136 out of 6,530 in mother  1 month ago

Hee hee - oh but then we would need a lot of frames - hee hee! But that is a good idea . . . to give them to family and friends - instead of holiday cards we can give them a piece of art (frames or no frames!). But for home, I would need a billion frames - and then I'd complain we don't have enough wall space - hee hee. We do display as many of her creations in her room, and on a shelf for the crafty pieces. But I know, I know, I can't save everything!

Hello much2say...

Actually the artist have the exclusive right of the drawings...and no one is allowed to misuse or use it or throw it without the permission of the creator, otherwise you will be sued for your actions...

So my advice is not to do anything to it until you get a word from the owner... thumbup.. rolleyes

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (651)   ranked 136 out of 6,530 in mother  1 month ago

Misterwit, you are too funny. As we are artists too, so I know that "right" all too well - hee hee. Ok, then I will have to save every creation my daughter makes, and also my son's when he comes of that age . . . even at the expense of not having any room to live, let alone walk in our own place. We will have to live, eat, and sleep on these pieces of artwork until otherwise notified by the artist. rasp

myLot reputation of 95/100. Misterwit (1044)   ranked 6,272 out of 6,530 in mother  1 month ago

Yeah...you have no choice but to keep it untouched....the thing is they think their paintings have the same quality and value as Davincci's ... blink

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (651)   ranked 136 out of 6,530 in mother  4 weeks ago

Davincci's? Hee hee - you're probably right! Well, if they turn into truly famous artists, I suppose then they could even get richer by selling all stuff they did as a kid . . . the rare pieces of developmental art! Oh, it'd then be truly worth it to save it all - ha!

I like to keep scrapbooks of my childrens' artwork. I have kept them since my children were 5 or 6. They are teens now. I try to keep something from every year. One day they will have these scrapbooks and i hope they cherish the memories as much as I have.

myLot reputation of 99/100. much2say (651)   ranked 136 out of 6,530 in mother  4 weeks ago

That's neat you keep a scrapbook for your children's artwork. How do you do it for the larger size pieces? And what do you do for the crafted items (things that are too bulky to put on the pages of a scrapbook)? I'm sure one day they will look at your scrapbooks and have fond memories of their creations - as well as your scrapbook creation!
