Ever since I could remember, I have always been fascinated by words. How they come together to make sentences, and how the sentences make a story. My first two books were Huckleberry Finn, and Treasure Island, both in hardbound form. Since then, friends, family, even acquuaintances, have loaned or given me reading material. The only novel that I read, but found boring, was Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs. It was hard to follow, and didn't make much sense. Do you have a certain book you can recommend, and was their something you read that was not to your liking? Give me some titles, so I know what to look/ not look for. happy

No, actually I haven't read any bad ones. Not recently anyway. I usually check into the book before I read it. Also the author. If you do your homework you just don't have a bad read. I love the written word and like you said how words are put together to make a sentence. I love the hunt for the right word and that one word that I can't seem to find sometimes. I can't put a book down or shut off a movie I have started even if it is not that good because I want to know how the writer decides to end it or to do certain things with it. Curiousity gets to me.

That's good when you read something you can't put down. That is one reason the library is so nice, you can automatically return something you don't appreciate. Where, if you purchase it from a book store, you know you wasted your money. wink

That is why I always do alot of research before investing in a book. I know the author is always good or the type of book is one that will be good. I read historical romances and true crime and always know my author and read comments from other readers too.

Well phooey, my response disappeared...

Anyway, what I think I said...

War and Peace - could not get all the way through it. Got bogged down during the war scenes. Try The Mists of Avalon for Fantasy or Lord of the Rings, for Science Fiction, The Gods Themselves, Double Star, or any of Kristine Kathryn Rusch's retrieval artist books, Nicholas and Alexandra for historical, anything by Dumas, I could go on forever. Want to see my library?

Wow, those are quite a few recommendationslol. I never heard of those titles, except for "Mists of Avalon" and "Lord of the Rings". I would love to see your library. Who knows, maybe I will learn something new

Honestly, my realm is in children's literature - always has been. I am fascinated by illustrations and words put together! I also love short stories (not necessarily for children). Perhaps I have a short attention span? Hmmmm whistle

But there was one book that I read (in high school, I think) that put into words the type of path I wanted to lead in life. I've told people to read it, but I don't know if they really understood it. "Siddhartha" by Hermann Hesse. It is a short book, an easy read.

In short, it's about a man who finds "enlightenment" through his own experiences of life, good and bad. He and his friend wanted to achieve enlightenment . . . the friend decided to follow Buddha, but Siddhartha decided to take his own path. In the end when they are much older, they meet again . . . who found true enlightenment . . .?

Emjoy if you ever decide to read it! thumbup

Hello there much, and thanks for the recommendation. It is truly helpful to know where the best books are. My favorite children's writer is Roald Dahl, his books meant a lot (James and the giant peach, charlie and the chocolate factory, charlie and hte great glass elevator) I even remember some of my teachers reading those to methumbup

geminikid - Ohh, Roald Dahl is one of my favorites!! "James and the Giant Peach" was read to us in the afternoons by our teacher too . . . and I just couldn't wait to hear the next chapter. I LOVED the description of peaches in that book - yum! That animated movie was such a disappointment for me. And who could forget the Charlie books . . . what an amazing imagination that dude had! I have many of his books . . . his poetry is great too.

Hello geminikid, I too am an avid reader. I like books of all sorts. Sometimes I even read the same book over if I really liked it and want to remain in the midst of it.

I especially like books by new authors. Some of the best seller novelists tend to let their books get watered down. Nothing worse than reading a book by an author that sounds exactly like their last book and is completely predictable.

Some of books you might try are
1. Kaleidescope by Danielle Steel
one of her best, an earlier book when they were more intriguing. Interesting weaving throughout the story and some surprises

2. The last Juror by John Grisham
I finally figured out the end but not until it was almost revealed.

3. Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts http://www.shantaram.com
New
author...book is over a thousand pages but very interesting, filled with adventure, drugs, Indian maffia, war and romance. He uses fantastic imagery, you feel like you are right there and all your senses are aware of what he describes.

4. Ten Big Ones by Janet Evanovich
Light, funny, mystery/cops and crime

Hopefully that will give you some enjoyable reading...:))

Well that should get you started on some adventures.

Hey paints, thanks for your recommended list. Never heard of Gregory Roberts, but will do some research. Have you ever heard of Augusten Burroughs? That guy is a crack up. He writes his books with such humor and flair. Anyway, I really do need to explore the literary world morehappy

Have you read the Twilight Saga? I know it's popular because of the movie, but I swear it's a good read and the movie doesn't really do the book justice. Maybe it's just because the book plays out better in my imagination than in the movies. lol.

When I was young I also liked to read a lot about Greek and Roman mythology. Those stories were pretty interesting.
