Han Solo, Scoundrel  email this discussion to a friend?

I'm currently researching and beginning to write a character analysis of Han Solo in the original 1977 film (Episode IV A New Hope). Aside from his obvious characteristics of acerbic humor, apparent greed, and skepticism, all in a totally lovable smuggler shell of course, I believe that he is necessary to the story of A New Hope because he provides a character balance to Luke and Leia. Leia is the brainy one, with her diplomatic/political training and experience, and her delightful little verbal jabs, whereas Luke is the new kid to the game full of wide-eyed wonder, questions, confusion, and that immature little whine in his voice. Han has experience, but is still not as idealistic or high-minded as Leia. This, of course, is only a very brief overview but I would value any insights you could offer. Also, if you know of any viable research sources I can use, please let me know about them.

Hi AliaVakar, are you doing the character analysis based just on the one episode, A New Hope, or through the trilogy? If it's just on the one episode, it's a bit more difficult because of his role through the rest of the trilogy. He provided all the things you listed. I think he also was a possible "rivalry" for the romantic interest for Leia, before knowing that Luke is her brother. In the New Hope episode, you don't realize he is going to return to save Luke by shooting Darth Vadar's tie fighter, so there is a redemption factor in his character, he learns that friendship and loyalty is more important than his greed, but more importantly, he puts his life on the line with Jabba by not paying him on time and knowing that the bounty hunters would be after him, he still came back to help Luke. I believe he plays a pivotal role in Star Wars as a character who lives his life as a smuggler but comes out a hero. His character is seen on polar opposites, starts out a loner with only his partner, Chewy and then ends up fighting for a cause as a General. There are many layers to his character. He is a realist, mocking Luke as he is training with Obi, about the Force but then comes to respect the Jedi and allows some of the idealism to influence him. You sense his loyalty to Chewy but feel as though he cares little for anyone else but disproves that at the end. He is one of my favorite characters in Star Wars. I don't know of any sources but Star Wars, Wiki or Wookiepedia has tremendous amount of information on all the Star Wars characters and the subsequent novels after Return of the Jedi, which Han Solo is still a main character in those novels.

I loved all of the Star Wars movies, and Han Solo played by Harrison Ford was my favorite character and I agree the story could have not existed without him because he brought a balance,at first he was just a greedy selfish smuggler that looked out for his own deck and tried to hook up with Leia, and later he showed he was a caring guy and he saved Luke's butt several times like the scene were Darth Vader was gonna shoot Luke out of the sky when they were destroying the first Death Star and out of nowhere Han Solo comes swooping down and sends Vader flying off into the middle of space,I love that scene and it is by far my favorite scene in the whole trilogy.
