should america be bilingual? |
|
America is a melting pot of thousands of cultures, and a huge mixture of everyone's experience. Still, in some schools, kids don't start learning foreign lanugages until later in their education. I think that they should start learning a second or third language as soon as possible. It would increase chances for communication amongst members of different cultures. It would be easier to get a job, and its just good to know how to speak more than one language. Do you think america should be bilingual? why or why not?

I think now alot of companies are looking to hire people that speak more than one language. Just for the fact that they may have clients or customers that don't know English. Also, I just think that it would be a good idea to learn a new language just in case you were to run into another person that doesn't speak English. Or maybe even if you were to travel to another country, then it would be good to know another language, to that country so you know how to get around in that country and how to communicate to the people that live in other countries. I think that it would be really nice that kids learn languages at a young age. I am trying to learn a new language now, but I am out of school. Why not start off our kids at a young age in learning a language and have them learn it the older they get. I know when I was in highschool, that is when I started taking Spanish classes, and that was only for two years. Two years really isn't much. I think it should be more than that.

I agree with you it gives you so much opportunities if you know some other languages because some foreign companies doesn't speak English that much.

2. burrito88 (153) | 3 weeks ago | I rather object to making the country bi-lingual. My grandparents came from eastern Europe and had to learn English. I know my grandmother went to night school to learn English and become a citizen. Besides if you make spanish the second language, what does that do for other other nationalities. I think we should be tolerant of people from other nationalities and speaking other languages, but I feel they should learn to speak English. They came to the country for a better life and, hopefully, to be Americans. Learning English should be part of the package. Not learning English suggests that a person does not want to be American. Learning a second language is a great idea, as is learning about diffeent cultures. But as you say America is a melting pot and people who refuse to learn English are not blending in.

happy6162 (1955) | 3 weeks ago | I agree with you that we should not be bi-lingual. I believe that people coming here for a better life should learn English if they are going to live here. There are so many different nationalities that live in America that it would be hard to decide which one we should choose as our second language.

burrito88 (153) | 3 weeks ago | In some ways i would make sense to learn Spanish, becaus there are so many Spanish speakers in the country and the world. However, if you go into science, such as chemistry, much of the scientific literature is written in German. Russian might also be a good language for science. For some people who go into the ministry, as my former college roommate, they might feel that Greek is good to learn because the Greek was one of the early languages for Bible texts and some Bible scholars feel that some of true meaning has been lost by translation to other languages. (And if you go on vacation to Quebec, there are areas where they discriminate against you if you don't speak French.) That said again, I think learning a second language is a good idea, but it shouldn't be arbitrarily be Spanish.

| 3. ProjectDefect (13) | 3 weeks ago | A second language may sound appealing, but that brings into questions... which language? This would undoubtedly be Spanish... but what does that solve? As a melting pot, we can only have a single, universal language. Otherwise we are not being equal to all other nationalities. I highly recommend individuals to learn a second language, if not a third or fourth. Perhaps some of our country's ignorance could be cut down if we were more willing to accept other languages. However, I believe that as a whole, adding a second language would only bring about confusion and inequality.

Offically no, statistically yes. some people who live in american don't even speak english, in certain areas that are populated by certain nationallities there are signs in stores and on the street in that nationallities laguage.it would be benificial for people to lean a second language for the purpose of getting jobs. I think america should be biligual just because of all the nationalities that live here. but the problem is not the languges but the sentament that "americans" feel toward other nationalities, forgetting altogether that this land was bacically stolen from it original owners. So yes i think america should be bilingual. Why? becase it multi-cultural, more so than any other country. and it would help relations between people in america who don't look and talk the same, if you get what i mean.

5. wlee9696 (350) | 3 weeks ago | No America should not be bilingual. America is a melting pot so we need to melt into one language. English. I encourage children to learn a second language but it should be their own choice. We do not need a bilingual country. Our country is divided enough as it is, we need to come together. One sure way to assist in that goal is for everyone to use the same language.

6. lindiebiz (567) | 3 weeks ago | I dont agree which language will they adopt as thier second language, because if they pick one language, a group will protest when they see that it does not favour them. I think the desire to learn another language should be by choice. Everyone knows America is an english speaking country and if you want to go there you should be able to speak english

9. laglen (3691) | 3 weeks ago | I think it is great to learn other languages. But America being bi-lingual is a bad idea. English is the business language. It is spoken virtually everywhere. I do not think it should e required to learn a second language. I really think that people coming to America should put forth that effort. I traveled to France and Spain and sufficiently butchered their language. But atleast I tries and I did not expect anybody to speak my language. It is just common sense. But I do think the languages in schools should be taughht at a younger age, it is easier to learn.

| 10. avnieuwkerk (82) | 3 weeks ago | America is already bilingual. So I dont think that there is anything that can be done with respect to anyone having a say in this. It is also not a problem, it is what America is all about. Different people, cultures coming together. That is what is so great about America!!
