Do you like road trips? |
|
I have been traveling across the U.S. since my first road trip from Philadelphia, Pennasylvania to Miami, Florida in an 18 wheeler at 17 years of age. My mother has tossed me out of the house and I sat at the corner of Kesington and Allegheny and put out my thumb. What a blast, I was hooked on road trips ever since. Traveling the U.S by car is my favorite mode of travel. Though I have become a little more settled in the last twenty years staying in one place for years at a time, I still venture from state to state in road trip fashion.
Six months ago I sold nearly everything I owned, piled the few belongings I had left into my 1996 Monte Carlo, left the Kansas City Metro and headed for San Diego California which is roughly 1,800 miles. I love being on the road, seeing new sites, feeling the history and culture of the different areas. I pack food and water, no eating at fast foods.
Traveling with my little dog, I stop at roadside rest areas for a walk and stretch our legs. As well as taking in the sites it is amusing to watch the people on the road, how far they have traveled, why and where they are going. Sometimes I start up a conversation and even exchange addresses, making new friends along the way.
I guess I am sort of a vagabond. I am at my best on the road. It is like home to me. I stop to take pictures of landmarks and snap pics through the windshield when I do not want to stop. I made a three day road trip out of this one, stopped to visit a relative in the desert of Arizona and stayed at the smallest motel in the west (4 rooms). It was a beautiful setting nestled in the mountains. Looked like something out of a western movie with the architecture and various cactus and rock lawns.
A funny story I have to share from the trip. Being desert there was no grass anywhere to be found. Every thing is rock. Taking my little dog Ellie out to go potty was so hilarious. She walked all over, running in circles, moaning and whimpering and looking so bewildered. At first it did not hit me what the matter was and then I realized she was looking for grass. She was getting so frantic. Finally, my nephew lifted her and placed her in an area around a cactus that had some artificial plants surrounding it and she was able to relieve herself. I wished I had filmed it for one of the funniest videos shows.
Have you taken any road trips? Have you a memorable experience from one you would like to share?

I mentioned to Paints about some of the rest stops, there are also some lovely, interesting places to eat in Missouri, outside of St. Louis. 3. rg0205 (1727) | 3 weeks ago | I absolutely LOVE road trips.
My most favorite road trip was about a year ago when I went back to the Philippines. My boyfriend and I went on a 2 week road trip and drove to almost ALL provinces of Northern Luzon. We visited so many places and we saw so many wonderful things.
I have NEVER had such an experience in my life! It was amazing! We'd drive and then find a motel/hotel to check into. Sometimes we'd make stops and get 15 minute naps in the car if we couldn't find a place to check into right away.
I had a wonderful time and I hope I get to do it again:-)

4. savypat (7545) | 3 weeks ago | I am more of a stay at home and what the travel channel on TV, but when our kids lived at home we traveled for 2 weeks every year, we had a camper and went all over the Western US. We loved Oregon the best and that is where we have lived for the last twenty years. Before that we lived on the Mojave desert for fifty years.

paintswithwords (242) | 3 weeks ago | Good for you, savypat. You not only experienced the U.S. by road tripping but introduced the children to the experience and different cultures, scenery and history. Two solid weeks of traveling the country every year is more than some ever get. Thank you for sharing.

5. nyhollyjean (306) | 3 weeks ago | Hi D!
I love road trips too! As you know, I've done a bit of traveling in my day--to many lands near and far. But, one of my favorite memories was one time when my children were little and my husband and I were taking them to Florida to visit their grandparents. We didn't leave until early evening, as my husband had to work that day. We had supper and left and he drove as far as Buffalo from Albany. Then he started getting sleepy, so I took over. By this time, everyone was asleep but me. I was rarin to go! lol I turned the radio to my favorite music, got up to 75 and only stopped for coffee and potty breaks. When we got to warmer weather, I rolled down the window and just let the air keep me awake. I had a blast, just coasting along. Finally, it got to be morning and I pulled into a parking lot and woke my husband. I had driven all the way from Buffalo to Roanoke, Va! He got into the driver's seat and I immediately passed out! I'll always remember the freedom I felt during that drive.

paintswithwords (242) | 3 weeks ago | You and I should have been road-tripping together holly, we would have had a blast. That sounds like you had so much fun. So many in my family wonder how I can drive all that distance. They prefer taking a plane. Where is the 'smell the roses in that'. It is like you mention, even the air is invigorating. There is such an excitement that builds and you feel yourself propelled and rejuvenated. Yep, no doubt about it, we should have been road tripping together. We both have that marvelous wanderlust...lol Thanks for sharing that marvelous adventure. Your description made me feel the music and the breeze and the free flowing feeling again.

GardenGerty (20128) | 3 weeks ago | Since there are two of us, we can drive round the clock if we like. We recently bought a little Chevy Cavalier that is so comfortable. We can lean the passenger seat almost all the way flat and really rest well. Often we plan to get a room or cabin for a night, but end up just driving, or snoozing in rest areas.

6. dorannmwin (1621) | 3 weeks ago | I've only been on two long road trips in my life. The first one was from Lexington to Panama City Beach Florida when I was sixteen years old with a group from my school and the later was the following year with the same group of people to Fort Lauderdale Florida. I really enjoy traveling by car so I can see first hand how the terrain changes as you go. My husband and I have discussed traveling by car from here to Arizona at some point in the future, probably when our children are a bit older.

paintswithwords (242) | 3 weeks ago | Hi doran, so happy that you got to experience some road traveling. When the kids get a little older they will enjoy it as well. Sometimes my kids would get antsy, but we played all kinds of guessing games, from 'what am I thinking of to using signs and street names to compose a story. I took along craft and puzzle books, crayons and coloring books, snacks and drinks. Pillows for resting so they would be comfortable and a pad and pencil for them to keep a journal of the trip. It was nearly always a show and tell journal for school. Those experiences were priceless. You have so much to look forward to. Great aspiration. Thanks for sharing.

7. GardenGerty (20128) | 3 weeks ago | We sound pretty kindred. You may want to look for my discussion about rest areas. One of my favorites is not too far from KC. Missouri has pretty ones and eating in waysides and rest areas is a great way to save money on a trip. The blog I am working on is called Drive and dine and it talks about some of the places we do eat, but usually they are sit down restaurants, not fast food. We went to Missouri a couple of weeks ago. We will go to Oklahoma both for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

paintswithwords (242) | 3 weeks ago | Hi GG, yes, it does sound as though we are kindred spirits. Both Kansas and Missouri have some very pretty spots. I did not find the article on rest areas yet but did check out your article on needing a rest from vacations...lol. So true, yet the trips are too rewarding to cut them short enough to have time to rest up. Oklahoma has some breath taking sights. I love the national park in Broken Bow, actually it may be called BB park. Been 25 years since my stay in OK. You will enjoy it I am sure.

8. Chey1970 (688) | 3 weeks ago | I used to love to travel. I have visited 23 of the different states thus far and it was my goal to visit all 50. But as I get older, the more I hate being inside a vehicle for long periods of time. Maybe cause I no longer smoke in my car, taking trips that require hours on end to get there, makes me not want to take them. Traveling from Texas to Louisiana, every other month is enough for me.
| |
| |
|
|
paintswithwords (242) | 3 weeks ago | Wow, Chey, you are almost right up there with me. Do you have to go far from LA to TX? I still love traveling but do not do it as often as I used to. So far I have lived in 14 states and traveled through 32 but not tired of it yet. Perhaps when you do not have to do the monthly trip you will feel motivated to resume your goal of all 50 states. At any rate, you are amazing and I am glad you got to traverse the countryside so much.

9. cloudwatcher (3199) | 3 weeks ago | Hi D. As you know, I'm another one who loves to drive and can drive for 12-16 hours at a time.
My love of driving started as more of a necessity, I suppose. Even while I was still at school, I would be up early and on my bike (which I had won in an art competition) riding the streets, and then back doing the same after school. I just did anything to keep out of the house.
As soon as I was old enough I had my licence. I was earning good money for my young age and worked for a motor firm, so buying a vehicle was made easy. Either a 500 Speed Twin Triumph motorbike or a car became my means of transport. Every afternoon after work I was off! I hardly ever went home - just to catch a couple of hours sleep when I knew he would be asleep. I lived in my car. It was a place of safety and security.
Every weekend I would drive or ride down the highway to the capital which was then an 8-10 hour drive and some of it was still dirt road. I would drive round the main street and head back again. What peace! What security! What joy! What freedom! Nothing could touch me. Those trips were the only form of happiness in my first 22 years of life, so YES! I love driving!
It wouldn't be possible - at least not advisable - to do that today. I used to pull into a roadside rest stop and sleep on the wooden picnic table there, and it was safe. Today, I wouldn't even pull in if I was alone, let alone sleep there at night!
Memorable experience? No. Nothing in particular - just the thrill and peace of driving and of being alone. Oh - in those days, riding a motorbike did not require helmet, leathers, shoes. I wore a little skating skirt or pedal pushers and sandals. I am a redhead with a very fair complexion. After a weekend trip my arms and legs would be like a lobster and almost always blistered soon after.
I STILL love long distance driving on my own and can still drive for 12 hours non stop (except for comfort stops and a drink).

paintswithwords (242) | 3 weeks ago | Yes, CW, we are kindred spirits in many things. Perhaps it is our background that draws us both to the open road. Freedom, as you say. A feeling of being free of any and all troublesome things and a bigger than life inner strength that came with it. I can picture you zooming by on that Triump. what an adventurer you are. When I think of you I always see that picture of you on the motor bike and smile.
| |
|
|
cloudwatcher (3199) | 3 weeks ago | I haven't been on a bike in many years, and have no desire anymore. I am not objecting to the rules. On the contrary, I applaud them, but a helmet and leathers is not for me. I liked the wind blowing my hair, eyes watering, and the freedom of just a light dress and sandals. No fun now! I'll have the comfort of an air conditioned car now, thanks.

10. Crestview (191) | 3 weeks ago | Road trips are great, especially when you have someone to share it with and when you have no schedule time constraints.
| |

|
|
paintswithwords (242) | 3 weeks ago | Yes, crestview, that is the Eutopia for road trips. That is why I like to take long ones and leave myself plenty of time. That way you get to wind down and forget the mundane and truly experience the setting. In my case, however, I enjoy being on road alone even more than when someone is with me. How horribly selfish I am...lol
