I feel Sourav Ganguly has been the best captain in the Indian Cricket history.He took the reins of the team when cricket was under the shadow of match fixing and many Indian cricketers were involved in it.Due to that pressure and many senior players like Jadeja and Azhar being kicked out off the team the team was not performing very well.Sourav Ganguly put his faith in the youngsters and built a solid team within a year and the results were in front of the world.He gave team India the much needed aggression and a desire to win every match.He brought up many talented youngsters like yuvraj singh,harbhajan singh,mohammad kaif,etc and showed complete faith in them and eventually they developed as match finishers for India.

4.  ram_cv (2150) | 3 weeks ago |  There have been many good captains for India, so it is a very difficult question and at times given the different eras it is also not correct to compare them. For e.g. Wadekar thought us how to win during his captaincy, Kapil put us on the top of the map during his captaincy, Gavaskar brought stability to the job. But for me I personally rate Ganguly as the best captain till date, because he changed the mentality of the Indian cricket. He thought that you can take on the best and given them a run for their money.
So currently this is my personal choice, but I still think it is unfair to compare captains from different eras.

The current series against Australia show cases that he has still not been successful in making India a ruthless unit. I think that he would need to achieve that to really upscale Ganguly as one of the greatest.
