Maybe I Am Just An Ignorant Male... |

...but should you really be feeding a 2 1/2 month old baby yogurt(although it is made from all natural ingredients)? How about mixed rice foods designed for babies 6 months and older? For some reason, I find this wrong, but this girl I know is feeding her baby this stuff because "Britney's Mom said it was okay". Of course, she hasn't asked her babies Doctor anything about it, and Britney's baby keeps getting constipated and stuff, although according to Britney's Mom "Oh, that's normal". It's been a few years, but I don't recall giving that stuff to either of my kids at that young of an age.
So...myLot Mommies...am I just a dumb old Daddy, or should these two girls be consulting their babies Doctors instead of Britney's Mom before giving this stuff to the babies?

1. babyangie27 (1202) | 3 weeks ago | You should ALWAYS consult with your child's doctor before giving them certain foods at certain ages. So people would rather listen to others than the Doctors which are not always right but probably know more than Brittany's mom.

2. cryw0lf (740) | 3 weeks ago | Children need certain things to grow, following somebody elses UNPROFESSIONAL opinion is a bit stupid to be completely honest. Babies should be fed the recommended food as it helps their development. Have you tried talking to them about this?

The_Lamb_Lies_Down (2608) | 3 weeks ago | Yes, and they both tell me the one girl's Mom said it won't hurt them...although the info I am finding on the web says not to do it...should I just keep my opinion to myself?

4. mysdianait (11884) | 3 weeks ago | Well many things change with progress - but babies don't!
I asked the doctor when it was time to start feeding mine and he did not go straight over to yoghurts. I didn't base his diet on what the celebrities kids were having either and I wouldn't do that if he was a baby now either.
Mom might know best but not a divas mom and not better than the doctor surely?

The_Lamb_Lies_Down (2608) | 3 weeks ago | Not that Britney...
I looked around online, and all the sites I am seeing say breastmilk or formula only for the first four months, but neither of these girls think I know what I am talking about because I am a guy, even though I was the primary caregiver to both of my children...
| |
GardenGerty (20193) | 3 weeks ago | Well, Lamb and Fwidman, you are both okay in my book and probably would be excellent caregivers today as well. I do not think you will convince these girls, they probably think they invented parenting and motherhood personally and their opinion is law. Save your breath and your brain cells. It probably will not kill the babies, but it may set them up for long term allergies.
| |
mysdianait (11884) | 3 weeks ago | I assumed he meant that Britney too.
I think it is so wrong that they are taking them off the milk so soon. It will/could do no end of damage if they are not getting the right nutrition and I definately feel that, if you can do it without upsetting anyone, you should point out that there is a time and place for everything. With babies the later the better.

mommyboo (3277) | 3 weeks ago | I thought he was referring to a celebrity's mom as well. I'm just not sure what to say to people who believe it's okay to do whatever you want with a baby. For heaven's sake, I know people who think you don't need to use a CARSEAT after the baby is a year old....

The_Lamb_Lies_Down (2608) | 3 weeks ago | Well, I have always heard breastmilk or formula only 'til they reach a certain age...sorry I'm worried about these kids.
| |
Irishfrndly65 (7310) | 3 weeks ago | I understand that. If it's good organic yogurt the child should not be having constipation. Sugary yogurts are about as good as nothing. The sugar actually counteracts the good bacteria in the yogurt itself. Plain organic yogurt can be very beneficial...but try to find it. And the sugar helps get kids hooked on sweets early on too.

The_Lamb_Lies_Down (2608) | 3 weeks ago | Okay, why are all the sites I am looking at saying nothing but breastmilk or formula for the first four months?
| |
The_Lamb_Lies_Down (2608) | 3 weeks ago | But...it says "less than one year"...but WHEN? 2 1/2 months?
| |
The_Lamb_Lies_Down (2608) | 3 weeks ago | You aren't paying attention to how young these kids are...I found the same info you quoted at another site, but it also said "Most pediatricians recommend starting your infant on Yogurt around 7-8 months of age. Some pediatricians also recommend yogurt as a great first food (from 6 months+). Selecting a Whole Milk Yogurt is the most beneficial to your infant as babies need fats in their diets for proper growth."
| |
Irishfrndly65 (7310) | 3 weeks ago | Yes...I am. I cannot say she is wrong because each child is DIFFERENT!! Now...if she's just an idiot, and it not paying attention the body signs of each of her children...then..that's another matter entirely. Is she?
| |
The_Lamb_Lies_Down (2608) | 3 weeks ago | So did you even read the discussion where I mention constipation and not consulting the Doctor about any of it?
Yer kinda startin' to piss me off, because you're actin' like you didn't...
| |
Irishfrndly65 (7310) | 3 weeks ago | And no..you're not an ignorant male, I see your genuine concern.
I guess why this punches buttons is that without a lot more info I just can't make a judgement call because I do NOT agree with government stats on sooo much in the medical field. They try to tell us our child us "under average for his height" well freakin doh, his bio-parents were too! Oh...and now...he's normal.....geez. Let me tell you, they can have you quite worried over the something that makes not a hill of beans.
I sat in the WIC office, under the gaze of a lady that was about 5'3" and as wide as she was tall. My husband INSISTED that we continue with their crappy sugary foods because he saw their records as another way to prove that we were taking good care of Z. I feed my son as naturally as I can, no white sugar, no white flour, no white rice. He gets whole foods, whole grains, organic milk, range fed eggs. But this, obviously obese woman was trying to tell me that my child was a little heavy!!! You could SEE his freakin ribs for gosh sakes. He is VERY active, and he eats all day long, I kid you not. He's a 'grazer'. So..I was a bit disinclined to really take her advice as law, so to speak. LOL I'm not being ugly, but you see the irony of this, surely.
Yea..it's not cheap, but by damn he doesn't have all the illnesses and allergies that other kids have. In fact this year, I am giving him 1 teaspoon of organic apple cider vinegar, per day, he and I both take it. So far neither of us have even had the sniffles.
So..yea..maybe I am a bit radical/different/out there.........

Irishfrndly65 (7310) | 3 weeks ago | Yes I did, but now I see that I misread it. I'm not here to piss you off Mykl, at all. I thought you said another child was constipated. Sorry about that.
| |
Irishfrndly65 (7310) | 3 weeks ago | "and Britney's baby keeps getting constipated and stuff," Ok..now I am confused. This say's Brit's baby is constipated. Is this other baby constipated as well? I'm just real reluctant to pass judgement without more info, that's all.
| |
The_Lamb_Lies_Down (2608) | 3 weeks ago | Angie decided last night to give HER baby the stuff because the other girl is giving it to HER baby...regardless of the fact that the other baby doesn't appear to be accepting it very well.
So I guess today we'll find out if it constipates her baby too...
No, I don't think WIC knows their collective butts from a hole in the ground...they were concerned when my son couldn't play "patty-cake" even though he had never been taught it...acting like it was a developmental disability or some crap...

6. ladym33 (5211) | 3 weeks ago | I would probably not give a baby yogurt until the 3 month mark, but if the baby is not thriving or is still hungery with just formula a little yogurt is Ok as long as the baby is able to get it down. At 6 months a old a baby should be able to start having a little bit of oats or rice mixed in with the food, the food should be more smooth then ricy but mixing a little rice is OK again if the baby can handle it. If the baby appears to be choking or having trouble getting the food down then the parent should stop wait a month and try again, but if they baby is tolerating it well then it is fine.

The_Lamb_Lies_Down (2608) | 3 weeks ago | The babies have been doing fine...it is the Mommies that have suddenly decided to just start giving them the stuff...and not bothering to ask the Doctors if it is okay...

mommyboo (3277) | 3 weeks ago | Myk, I don't understand the huge rush of these girls. Are they particularly young mommies? Are they thinking maybe if they rush the babies along, they will grow up faster? What is the point? No baby goes to college in diapers, nursing, not walking, and not speaking, so I really don't understand the huge rush. Each stage is a neat experience, or at least it was for me. I miss the 'baby' time.
My hubby has told me that he did put cereal in the older kids' bottles - but again they were bottle fed babies. He said for some reason it DID help them sleep through the night - but they also got tons of ear infections. They didn't actually start eating solids any earlier, and I think that maybe there were some allergy things that came up for short periods of time when they were little. My daughter has never had any sensitivities or allergies, and she slept thru the night (11-5) when she was less than 2 months old.

mike197601 (2792) | 3 weeks ago | I wouldn't give them yoghurt myself if it was my baby.
When I looked at the information on the net there appears to be lots of differing opinions on all aspects of childcare/parenting.
There are so many sites saying different things that I think it may be confusing to new parents and they would find it hard to know the right thing to do.
I would do what I thought was right for my baby and make sure whatever I did wouldn't be harmful to them.
When it comes to thinking another parent is possibly doing the wrong thing as far as their baby is concerned it is actually quite a difficult situation.
As long as what they were doing wouldn't kill the baby or really be proven to be harmful I don't think I would say anything. I think that whatever I said may come across as being critical of their parenting skills which seems to be a very sore point with many parents.

10. coldmoon (859) | 3 weeks ago | I'm not a momie, but one day if I had a baby, I would always ask the doctor and the noutritious expert for the food I feed my child. I imagine that if I followed what Britney's Mom say, my child would be as dumb as Britney that I never want to see.
